Exploring basic changes in theatrical dance from Romantic ballets to the present, Village Voice critic Jowitt (The Dance in Mind) assesses the contributions of Taglioni, Petipa, Duncan, St. Denis, Graham, Humphrey, Cunningham ("the eminence grise of vanguard dance") and others. Among the areas covered in this major dance study are technique, ideology, philosophy, psychology, the use of emotion, breathing, nudity. Jowitt also examines the personal lives of dancers (their dilemmas, liaisons, ways of dressing); the prevalence of "oriental" harem, temple and other exotic themes, forms and styles; the influence of archetypes, myths and Greek dramas on Martha Graham; the impact of Petipa and Ivanov on the ballets of Balanchine. In her "anxiety to chronicle a notoriously ephemeral art," Jowitt avoids the dance critic's pitfall of performing an occasional "inadvertent disservice," even as she delves into the nontechnical, like the attempts of "modern" dancers to express the aspirations and struggles of mankind, the cross-fertilization of the arts, especially at New York's Judson Church in the 1960s, and reasons why male dancers are almost always secondary to women. In her roles as historian, critic, sociologist, and anthropologist, Jowitt writes about such varied aspects of dance history as the 19th-century sylph in relation to Romanticism in art and literature and to the social and political bases for performance dance in the 1960s. The DNA was a major player in the prolonged exclusion of Africans from citizenship and the establishment of a racially repressive labor market.

Exploring the connections between racial domination and bureaucratic growth in South Africa, Evans points out that the DNA's transformation of oppression into "civil administration" institutionalized and, for whites, legitimized a vast, coercive bureaucratic culture, which ensnared millions of Africans in its workings and corrupted the entire state. Evans focuses on certain features of apartheid—the pass system, the "racialization of space" in urban areas, and the cooptation of African chiefs in the Bantustans—in order to make it clear that the state's relentless administration, not its overtly repressive institutions, was the most distinctive feature of South Africa in the 1950s.

All observers of South Africa past and present and of totalitarian states in general will follow with interest the story of how the Department of Native Affairs was crucial in transforming "the idea of apartheid" into a persuasive—and all too durable—practice.

Few children are around; those who are outside ride their bikes in circles in the parking lot There are few signs of caring; litter, graffiti, and broken light fixtures indicate the opposite. Clare Cooper Marcus is Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, Clare Cooper Marcus is internationally recognized for her pioneering research on the psychological and sociological aspects of architecture, land-use planning, and landscape design – particularly urban open space.  Wendy Sarkissian bring planning to life with over 40 years’ experience in planning, design and environmental studies. Educated in Arts, literature, town  planning and environmental ethics, I am a planner, author, educator, facilitator and consultant, working primarily in  planning and development in Australia and overseas.

An essential resource for architects, planners, AND parents

This book, published over twenty years ago, is as important, or even more important, than it was at the time. The authors' careful study of people's use and evaluation of their living environments hold very valuable lessons both for designers of and users (i.e. parents) in multifamily housing.

For designers: the current emphasis on form, in both the avant-garde and neotraditionalist schools, is fatally flawed in that human usage, particularly the way in which families with children live in housing and its surrounding spaces, is completely ignored. Most "high-design" housing, whether designed by Koolhaas or Duany, is designed for upper-income people who either presumably have no children or have others care for them. The lack of human concern manifest in today's architectural literature is disturbing and regrettable. Much design talent that could be applied to solving the kinds of problems that Cooper-Marcus and her coauthor identify is instead being misapplied to the endless competition to design beautiful housing for the rich.

For planners: Unfortunately, almost all of the kind of housing shown in this book is scarce or nonexistent in the United States. This is for two reasons. First, the urban areas in which this kind of family housing could be built- such as much of the area around downtown Chicago- are often so high-cost that the only new housing constructed are luxury condominiums for households without children. Second, the suburban areas where most middle-class Americans with children live treat multifamily housing as an undesirable land use, something that only "renters" or those too poor to purchase a stand-alone single family home will want to live in. But this book shows how much our planning laws err in permitting only low-density suburban subdivisions of endless homes, lacking open space, safety from car traffic, and places for children to walk and explore.

For parents: Most Americans will be both startled and disturbed to read this book's statistic that, in 1973, less than one-third of British children under five playing outdoors were being directly supervised by their parent. But the reason for our distress should not be in the 'carelessness' of those parents; rather, it should be with the fact that our own housing developments are so poorly designed that we lack the ability to provide our children with room to roam, explore, make mistakes, construct, and destroy things. No wonder our children are increasingly sedentary, or locked into a cycle of endless structured 'activities'- we lack a built environment that allows them both to have freedom, safety, and a high level of exposure to other children- except for the suburban cul de sac.

If only the lessons of this book could be reinfused into design culture (so that architects designed for human life as well as for visual beauty) and into planning culture (so that the kind of humane, multifamily housing that permitted family life could actually be built in this country), we might begin to reclaim family life, and community life, from the computer, TV room, and SUV. We can only hope.

Actually full of useful information!

It seems that a great number of architecture books of this type exist solely to promote the author's personal design philosophy. This book, however, is full of design guidelines based on feedback from residents of both public and private high-density housing. Many (if not most) of the guidelines could be applied to almost any housing type (from low-income public housing to high-end private developments.) At the very least, the book gets designers thinking about how people use and perceive the buildings in which they live.

A very useful book

This book is both a call for better designed medium density housing and a source book on how to achieve that end. The great thing about this book is that it provides simple design and layout advice for housing projects based on detailed research and post occupancy evaluations. This book sets out what works in housing design. I think every planner or designer should have this book close at hand.

IV), monophthongal and diphthongal rhymes (Ch. V), final nasals (Ch. VII), final stops (Ch. VIII), final liquids (Ch. IX), root-final *-s (Ch. X), suffixes (Ch. XI). Particular attention is paid to variational phenomena at all historical levels (e.g. Ch. XII "Allofamic variation in rhymes").

This Handbook builds on the best previous scholarship, and adds up-to-date material that has accumulated over the past 30 years. It contains reconstructions of over a thousand Tibeto-Burman roots, as well as suggested comparisons with several hundred Chinese etyma. It is liberally indexed and cross-referenced for maximum accessibility and internal consistency.

About the Author
James A. Matisoff, Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the world's leading authorities on the languages of East and Southeast Asia, especially the Sino-Tibetan family. He is the author of numerous books, monographs, and articles, on topics synchronic and diachronic, grammatical, semantic, phonological, and lexicographical, including: The Loloish Tonal Split Revisited (1972), The Grammar of Lahu (1973/1982), Variational Semantics in Tibeto-Burman (1978), Blessings, Curses, Hopes and Fears: Psycho-ostensive Expressions in Yiddish (1979/2000), The Dictionary of Lahu (1988), Languages and Dialects of Tibeto-Burman (1996). He is the Principal Investigator of the Sino-Tibetan Etymological Dictionary and Thesaurus project, and Editor of the journal Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman Area. He is one of the founders of the annual International Conferences on Sino-Tibetan Languages and Linguistics. He has taught at Columbia and Berkeley, and has directed 28 doctoral dissertations in Asian and general linguistics.

This scholarly work by sometime novelist Barakat (sociology, Georgetown Univ.) is a thorough, theoretical, yet practical analysis of Arab society. Barakat views the Arab world as a dynamic, evolving whole, containing immense diversity but still potentially cohesive and strong, provided the current pervasive alienation of its people can be overcome. Given the unwillingness of Arab regimes to truly reform their societies, Barakat sees only two options for the future of the Arab people: traditional religious (reactionary) vision or progressive secular vision. This book provides the Western reader with a wealth of historic and contemporary information, and is especially welcome because it presents an Arab view. It is not an easy book to absorb; it is well written but complex and can be dry and redundant at times. Still, this is a valuable addition to the body of works on the Arab world written in English by Arab scholars and will be a useful reference/textbook for Arab studies and comparative sociology courses. A look at Arab culture by Barakat (Sociology/Georgetown Univ.), an expatriate Syrian. Barakat's vision is that of the nahda, or Arab ``renaissance'': ``How is it possible to achieve unity, democracy, secularism, and social justice in a society burdened with fragmentation, authoritarianism, traditionalism, religious fundamentalism, patriarchy, erosion of a sense of shared civil society, pyramidal social class structure, and dependency?'' While he supplies no easy answers, the author does offer a provocative discussion of Arab phenomena--for example, in his view of religion as including an ``alienating'' component, and in his dismissal of it as a ``revolutionary or transformative movement'' because, he says, it subjugates believers and merely establishes a new elite in place of the old. Central to Barakat's view of the ``single, overarching society'' of the Arab world is the idea that this world is in a state of continual change--contradicting Western Orientalist views of it as static. Barakat loses few opportunities to browbeat Orientalist scholars but his rhetoric is neither so new--Edward Said routed the Orientalists a decade ago, and better- -nor so eloquent that it goes much beyond ideological ornamentation; moreover, when Barakat belabors Western Orientalist scholars for their lack of fieldwork, he reveals his own reliance on texts. He winds up his discussion with a knowledgeable, essentially political, typology of Arab literature, and with a discussion of 20th-century Arab thought. Underneath the rhetoric here, there's an erudite but hardly revolutionary summation of the state of the Arab world. Someone who had read the "Arab Mind" of Raphael Patai, has to read this book also. This book elaborates the social-cultural devolpment and psychology of the Arab Region through different prespectives. Although Halim Barakat sounds very "arabic-emptionalized" in some conclusions and concepts, his book offers a possible answer of the big question: WHY they (Arab People, wherever they exist) think and act in this way, but also WHY people in different cultures think and act in different way. Very intersting concepts and hypothesis for new thories, which could be useful for cross-cultural researchers in general.

How did an African-American man born in a ghetto in 1879 rise to such religious prominence that his followers addressed letters to him simply "God, Harlem U.S.A."?

Using hitherto unknown materials, Jill Watts portrays the life and career of one of the twentieth century's most intriguing religious leaders, Father Divine. Starting as an itinerant preacher, Father Divine built an unprecedented movement that by the 1930s had attracted followers across the nation and around the world. As his ministry grew, so did the controversy surrounding his enormous wealth, flamboyant style, and committed "angels"—black and white, rich and poor alike.

Here for the first time a full account of Father Divine's childhood and early years challenges previous contentions that he was born into a sharecropping family in the deep South. While earlier biographers have concentrated on Father Divine's social and economic programs, Watts focuses on his theology, which gives new meaning to secular activities that often appeared contradictory. Born George Baker Jr. (1876-1965), Father Divine was a charismatic African American religious leader who in 1919 established the Peace Mission movement. In this expansion of her doctoral thesis, Watts, who teaches history at California State University, cogently argues that Father Divine should be recognized as a theologian raher than as a cult figure. Based first in affluent, white Sayville, Long Island (N.Y.) and later moving to Harlem, Father Divine and his followers advocated integration, hard work, positive thinking, pacifism, celibacy and the acceptance of Father Divine as God. His message of salvation appealed to both blacks and whites, as did his programs of job training and free food during the Depression. By the late 1950s, Father Divine, a powerful figure in the '30s and '40s, was weakened by sexual and financial scandal and a racist vendetta launched by the Hearst papers. a useful, but flawed book

Father Divine and his followers are often a subject of some derision -- his claim to be literally God and the sex scandals during his ministry make him an easy target. Jill Watts, to her credit, takes the man seriously and discusses his theology at some length, identifying its relationship to other "New Thought" religions like Christian Science, as well as the man's role in the nascent civil rights movement in the United States.

Unfortunately, the book relies almost entirely on anecdote. Want to know what some former follower said about "Mother Divine" in 1937? It's probably here. Want to know how many followers he had, or how much money, or where the money came from? No such luck. Divine said the money was handed to him directly by God, and that's enough for Watts. This is essentially a narrative, not a work of analysis.

The writing is irregular as well. One sentence refers to "black" followers and "white" followers, and the next to "blacks" and "EurAmericans." Watts editorializes oddly at times. Every decision that worked out well for the Peace Mission is characterized as coming from Divine's deep insight into human nature and careful planning. Every setback is credited to scheming by those who opposed him, especially William Randolph Hearst. It's not believable.

Though the reader is left with a decent understanding of why the movement has largely faded (hard to continue to maintain that you're God once you've died, plus the sex scandals, financial scandals, and the declining importance of Divine's apparent material wealth after the end of the Great Depression), there is not nearly so good a discussion of why it grew so large (or, for that matter, how large it grew, see above).

Finally, there is not a sufficiently clear demarcation in the text between the things we know are true and those that Watts merely supposes, especially in the scantily documented early years of Divine's life.

The True Vine

I picked this book up from a friend who had purchased it and could not put it down once I began. For those like myself that thought the spiritual life of most African-Americans ranged from Christian evangelicalism to the Nation of Islam and Moorish Science, this was an eye opening experience from the perspective of how influencial "New Thought" movements were on Father Divine and his integrated band of followers. This book provides a study of American religious history between the two world wars that few Americans are aware of.
Father Divine finally takes his rightful place along with others of his era, Aimee Semple McPherson, Billy Sunday and Charles & Myrtle Filmore. The elements incorporated into Father Divine's mission are varied besides New Thought, Unity, Christian Science, there are also elements of the Society of Friends as well as Shaker spirituality. This book was a constant surprise and delight. Father Divine comes across as fully human with a nobility of spirit that persevered through several decades of rampant racism. Highly recommended.
