In the first essay, Habermas himself succinctly presents the centerpiece of his theory: his proceduralist paradigm of law. The following essays comprise elaborations, criticisms, and further explorations by others of the most salient issues addressed in his theory. The distinguished group of contributors—internationally prominent scholars in the fields of law, philosophy, and social theory—includes many who have been closely identified with Habermas as well as some of his best-known critics. The final essay is a thorough and lengthy reply by Habermas, which not only engages the most important arguments raised in the preceding essays but also further elaborates and refines some of his own key contributions in Between Facts and Norms. This volume will be essential reading for philosophers, legal scholars, and political and social theorists concerned with understanding the work of one of the leading philosophers of our age.

These provocative, in-depth debates between Jürgen Habermas and a wide range of his critics relate to the philosopher's contribution to legal and democratic theory in his recently published Between Facts and Norms. Drawing upon his discourse theory, Habermas has elaborated a novel and powerful account of law that purports to bridge the gap between democracy and rights, by conceiving law to be at once self-imposed and binding.

The Women of Paris and Their French Revolution (Studies on the History of Society and Culture), by Dominique Godineau

During the French Revolution, hundreds of domestic and working-class women of Paris were interrogated, examined, accused, denounced, arrested, and imprisoned for their rebellious and often hostile behavior. Here, for the first time in English translation, Dominique Godineau offers an illuminating account of these female revolutionaries. As nurturing and tender as they are belligerent and contentious, these are not singular female heroines but the collective common women who struggled for bare subsistence by working in factories, in shops, on the streets, and on the home front while still finding time to participate in national assemblies, activist gatherings, and public demonstrations in their fight for the recognition of women as citizens within a burgeoning democracy.

Relying on exhaustive research in historical archives, police accounts, and demographic resources at specific moments of the Revolutionary period, Godineau describes the private and public lives of these women within their precise political, social, historical, and gender-specific contexts. Her insightful and engaging observations shed new light on the importance of women as instigators, activists, militants, and decisive revolutionary individuals in the crafting and rechartering of their political and social roles as female citizens within the New Republic.

An Astounding Resource
By ManicPanic
For anyone researching the French Revolution this book would be an invaluable resource. Quotes, statistics and geographical interpretation of the riots, all are included in the realistic, sometimes tantalizing look at the struggles of Parisian women and their roles in the French Revolution. Not just a fleshed out version of a history texts after-thought, as happens so many times with books about the women or minorities of history - this book gives us the real forces behind some of the major events of the revolution - forces that include the demands of disenfranchised women eager to take part in the new Sovereignty of the people.

The tons of research done by Godineau shows not only in the immense bibliography but also in the completeness of the themes discussed in the book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the French Revolution or the history of Women.

Inquisition, by Edward Peters

This impressive volume is actually three histories in one: of the legal procedures, personnel, and institutions that shaped the inquisitorial tribunals from Rome to early modern Europe; of the myth of The Inquisition, from its origins with the anti-Hispanists and religious reformers of the sixteenth century to its embodiment in literary and artistic masterpieces of the nineteenth century; and of how the myth itself became the foundation for a "history" of the inquisitions.

From Publishers Weekly
Inquisition history, a developing field, provides a key to the "understanding of past societies in their entirety." Peters, professor at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Torture, demonstrates this key function as he traces the transformation of the inquisition tribunal from a simple legal procedural of ancient Rome to its employ as a feared instrument of enforcing religious orthodoxy in the medieval period, to its symbolic use in the works of such contemporary writers as Kafka, Koestler and Miller. In Peters's view, the societal divisions brought about by the Reformation in the 16th century provide the grounds for centuries of polemic, fiction and a vivid mythology that caused the term "The Inquisition" to be persistently associated with coercive authority that attempts to stifle free expression. Richly detailed and relevant in application to contemporary philosophy, this study, mainly of interest to historians and social scientists, establishes the thesis that "the history of myth is a valid part of history."

Review
"Tracing the Inquisition's history from its roots in Roman legal procedure through its growth under the Roman Church as an instrument to enforce religious orthodoxy and up to its depiction as a symbol of intellectual dissent (no longer simply the Inquisition, but now "The Inquisition) by such artists as Schiller, Verdi, and Dostoevski, Peters makes a forceful and cogent case that history and myth inform one another--thus making historical objectivity but another myth. Not only an excellent study of the Inquisition, but a piquant look at the methodology of historians."--"Kirkus Reviews

If you're interested in the subject, this is essential reading
By A. O'Neill
There's nothing much I can say here that the other four- and five-star reviewers haven't said already, so let me just add three things:

1) Peters' book makes good use of original sources close to the time of the events, an essential characteristic of reliable historical accounts.

2) Other reviewers have given this book a low rating because they thought the writer was biased. I'm not going to provide any arguments about historical bias vs. reviewer bias; if you're smart enough to read this book, then you're smart enough to parse those arguments for yourself. But I will say that Peters wisely sticks to the one topic at hand, not as an apologist but as an observer.

3) Finally, a note to clarify any confusion about the author: there's another Ed Peters who *is* a Catholic apologist who *also* occasionally discusses historical issues; this guy isn't that guy.

Convincing, especially after reading Wm Walsh
By Marshall Fritz
My introduction to the notion that most of us believe a lot
of exaggerations and falsehoods about "the Inquisition"
was William Walsh's book, "Characters of the Inquisition."
Walsh was an ardent Catholic and a great admirer of Queen Isabella.

As a novice reader on the Inquisition, I had little
way to gauge how serious might be his bias. Then, along came
Edward Peters! His book is hardly a whitewash of the goal of a
confessional state (everybody believes in the same religion or
you leave), nor of the methods used in Spain and other places
to try to enforce this. But it does give us 20th Century
folks a clearer picture of 15th and 16th Century thinking
that heresy was treason, and treason then like today was a
serious crime against the state.

After giving facts of the inquisitions, Peters uses the second
half of the book to describe how the facts of the inquisitions
got exaggerated and embellished with falsehoods over
the centuries, eventually becoming what he calls the "Myth of
the Inquisition."

After reading Peters, I can even more enthusiastically recommend Walsh.

--- One chapter I would have like to have seen in Peters
is a review of inquisitions done by Protestants in Geneva,
Germany, and England, including the Witch Hunts. It would
be good to have something to compare to the Spanish, Portuguese,
Romans and Venetians.

The Wages of Sin: Censorship and the Fallen Woman Film, 1928-1942, by Lea Jacobs

The story of the fallen woman was a staple of film melodrama in the late 1920s and 1930s. In traditional plots, a woman commits a sexual transgression, usually adultery. She becomes an outcast, often a prostitute, suffering humiliations that culminate in her death. In more modern variants, the heroine is a stereotypical "kept woman," "gold digger," or wisecracking shopgirl who uses men to become rich. In The Wages of Sin, Lea Jacobs uses the fallen woman film, which served as a focal point for public criticism of the film industry, to explore Hollywood's system of self-censorship and the evolution of the rules governing representations of sexuality.

Drawing on the extensive case files of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), the industry trade association responsible for censorship, Jacobs focuses on six films. Her close analyses of The Easiest Way, Baby Face, Blonde Venus, Anna Karenina, Kitty Foyle, and Stella Dallas reveal the ideology of self-regulation at work and the social constraints affecting the film industry.

From Publishers Weekly
Jacobs, an assistant professor of communication arts at the University of Wisconsin, presents a well-researched examination of the ways in which the Production Code strictures of Hollywood's depiction of sex contributed to the screen construction of female sexuality in the '30s. The author writes, ``Because industry self-regulation functioned as a sort of machine for registering and internalizing social conflict, it provides an extraordinarily fruitful means of contextualizing film analysis,'' i.e., grounding it firmly in history. The resulting book is happily devoid of the jargon that mars much recent academic film writing, but it's a bit dry all the same. Jacobs's most interesting discovery is that the Code actually worked as a sort of preemptive strike to placate state censor boards while still allowing filmmakers a little breathing room. She challenges the commonplace that pre-1935 films were uncensored and shows that Code administrators were ``always complicit to some degree with the aims of major film producers.'' However, the tentativeness of her conclusions leaves one with the sense that this is a work in progress. Photos not seen by PW.

How censorship REALLY worked
By A Customer
If you're going to criticize a book, it is helpful if you 1)understand the argument of the book; and 2) understand how the author goes about making that argument. Every critcism that the reader from LA makes about this book reveals the reader's own ignorance.
LA Reader either ignores the fact that Jacobs has consulted over 100 censorship case files or does not know what these are (I am guessing the latter). Ignorance may also explain why LA reader attacks Jacobs for not having watched a film that no longer exists, and then ignores the fact that she painstakingly reconstructs the film as accurately as possible from available evidence (screenplays, studio memoranda, case files). Again, perhaps LA reader does not know what these are.
While one might not agree with Jacobs' conclusions, one can certainly not call them baseless. Jacobs may, at times, overstate continuities between the early 30s and later 30s, but at least she is aware of the fact that the Code existed and was enforced before 1934, unlike other books on the era (see Complicated Women, Sin in Soft Focus, for example).
This simplistic (and erroneous) view of censorship seems to have clouded LA Reader's judgement. Unfortunately, this view is one that is embraced by too many popular books on the subject (again, see Complicated Women and Sin in Soft Focus). LA Reader's apparent defense of this view, ignorance of the facts, and eagerness to attack a book that attempts to paint a more accurate picture of the way self-censorship worked in Hollywood, indicates that her/his views should be taken with a large grain of salt. On second thought, they should be ignored entirely.

So Obviously The Best Book on the Topic
By Patricia fentriss
The 'Travesty' review is indeed written by someone who is completely ignorant of what makes good film research - some kind of ornery film buff who thinks no one has anything to teach them. This is an extremely well research, well argued, and nuanced look at a fascinating topic.

A TRAVESTY
By A Customer
This book analyses the censorship histories of a small handful of films, one of which the author admits to not having seen. She writes from an ignorance of the era and comes to conclusions about censorship that are wrong and conclusions about women's place in the late twenties and thirties cinema that are not only specious but baseless, formed out of nothing but guesswork.
Anyone reading this book is likely to have seen more and know more on the subject than the author.
The truth is that the fallen women films of the early thirties explored sensitive subject matter, were protofeminist, and that the sentiments expressed therein -- the notion, for example, that sex before marriage was acceptable -- soon became mainstream in women's films, at least until the intrusion of censorship.
It's also true that the introduction of censorship caused a profound disruption in the content of women's films. The wrongness of Jacobs' argument that censorship made little difference is patently obvious to anyone who has ever seen more than five films from the early thirties and compared them to films from the late thirties.

A foundational work in Latin American Studies
By Anahi Walton-Schafer
Years ago, I attended a lecture by Doris Sommers where the author placed Tony Morrison's Beloved under the same political-historical-literary framework with great heuristic craft and passionate intensity. Sommers is a great scholar and an engaging lecturer.
In Foundational Fictions Sommers decouples the master narratives of the young Latin American Patrias of the 19th Century in political-historical and literary discourses, with race and gender at the core of all national projects.
As a teacher, Foundational Fictions provided me with new tools to get the attention and captivate the interest of a wild bunch of high school teenagers. Not a small feat.
Foundational Fictions is a must!

America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone to 1940, by Claude S. Fischer

The telephone looms large in our lives, as ever present in modern societies as cars and television. Claude Fischer presents the first social history of this vital but little-studied technology—how we encountered, tested, and ultimately embraced it with enthusiasm. Using telephone ads, oral histories, telephone industry correspondence, and statistical data, Fischer's work is a colorful exploration of how, when, and why Americans started communicating in this radically new manner.

Studying three California communities, Fischer uncovers how the telephone became integrated into the private worlds and community activities of average Americans in the first decades of this century. Women were especially avid in their use, a phenomenon which the industry first vigorously discouraged and then later wholeheartedly promoted. Again and again Fischer finds that the telephone supported a wide-ranging network of social relations and played a crucial role in community life, especially for women, from organizing children's relationships and church activities to alleviating the loneliness and boredom of rural life.

Deftly written and meticulously researched, America Calling adds an important new chapter to the social history of our nation and illuminates a fundamental aspect of cultural modernism that is integral to contemporary life.

From Library Journal
A warning to those who see technology as having clear and far-reaching consequences in American life: Don't use the telephone as an obvious example. From a user-centered view of technological dispersion, the author argues convincingly that the telephone reinforced social and cultural patterns rather than changed them. Most wealthy and middle-class Americans (and many farmers) adopted the new technology to their own ends prior to World War II--ends not necessarily anticipated or welcomed by industry leaders or technology forecasters. Well researched, with an excellent bibliography and fascinating endnotes, Fischer's study is likely to be a required purchase for comprehensive collections in sociology, business, and the history of technology. It is accessible, however, to a wider audience because of its readability.

Review
"Delightful. . . . A thought-provoking, often entertaining book that makes it impossible to take the telephone for granted."--"The Milwaukee Journal

From the Inside Flap
"A model for historians and sociologists and . . . a standard to which all future research on technology will refer."—Daniel Bell, Harvard University

"Will be essential reading in the social history of the telephone for a long time to come."—Carolyn Marvin, author of When Old Technologies Were New

"Everybody uses the telephone; only Claude Fischer has thought about it. The telephone has liberated us from neighborhood boundaries. It lets us play and work together over long distances. Long before the computer, its communication potentials helped change our society. Claude Fischer documents the planned decisions—and the unplanned events—that made the telephone such an important instrument for connecting America."—Barry Wellman, University of Toronto

"Fischer confronts the most significant, but also the most difficult, question we can ask about a new technology—what differences did it make in the lives of its users?. . . Fischer alerts us to the complexities involved in the incorporation of a new technology into everyday life. The richness and sophistication of his analysis should caution us not to jump to easy conclusions about the effects of technological change."—Roland Marchand, UC Davis

Has insights about adoption of phones & technology generally
By Ellen Isaacs
America Calling is, as its subtitle says, a social history of the adoption of the telephone from its invention in the 1870s until the 1940s, when it had become widely, but not universally used in the U.S. It is a sociological account of the attitudes held by the people who sold the telephone as much as those who used it. It contrasts the adoption of the phone with that of the automobile, which was introduced during about the same time period and was adopted more quickly. It uses a wide and creative set of data, including statistics of telephone use, telephone company reports, local newspaper stories, letters written at the time, interviews with people who grew up before telephones were commonplace, newspaper advertisements (noting when telephone numbers were printed as part of an ad), and even song lyrics of the time. After giving a national view of telephone adoption, Fischer fills out the story with a more detailed study of three towns in the San Francisco area; one mostly blue collar, one mixed, and one white collar.
Some of the more interesting findings in the book include:
- Farmers were among those most interested in using the phone and were willing to pay more for service, and yet AT&T was slow to recognize their need or the profit potential. AT&T did tended not to market to them, or to be willing to extend lines out to rural communities. - There was a brief period of competition, before the government sanctioned the AT&T monopoly, which greatly increased the use of the phone and reduced the costs. - It was not a trivial task to sell telephones to people. The phone company worked hard to contrive situations when a phone might be useful. Most people (especially in cities) had a way to send messages, so it was seen as a luxury.
- The notion of using the telephone for social conversation was looked down upon for a long time, and was rarely played up in sales pitches. Partially because of the "party line," where a whole community shared a single line, it was considered "frivolous" to use the telephone for anything other than short calls to conduct business or make arrangements. This attitude was also shared by the telephone company itself, which tended to encourage its use only for important matters.
- The adoption of the automobile, a much more costly investment, was must faster than that of telephones. People seemed to find them more useful, but also didn't look down upon the idea of buying them purely for pleasure. Even though the use of automobiles did infringe on others (horses spooked around cars and they tore up the roads), their use was more easily accepted than social conversation on the telephone.
- Women were the main customers of the telephone and were most likely to use them for social conversation.
I found this book to be well written and full of interesting information about the adoption of the telephone. I was surprised that it was more of an academic book than I'd expected. Based on the cover, I was expecting it to be oriented more toward the general public. Having adjusted to that, I found I trusted the figures Fischer gave and found him to be appropriately conservative about making inferences based on incomplete data. I also liked how Fischer compared the telephone to the automobile, which helped tease out some of the many possible factors affection adoption, such as income, region, and the effects of World War I and the Depression.
I'm not sure if this is a flaw in the book or whether the data just aren't available, but I was disapointed that I didn't learn more about the "social rules" about using the phone. Since I am interested in the adoption of the cell phone and the judgments people make about others who use them (especially in public places), I was curious to learn whether there were parallels in how people treated those who used the early telephones. Aside from learning that people looked down on those who chatted for social reasons, there was little information about how people used the telephone in the home (what room it was kept in, whether there were understandings about giving that person privacy, etc.), how they managed party lines, whether it was okay to call someone when they were visiting someone else's home, whether people made judgments about others based on their phone usage, and so on. However, there was an interesting segment on the evolving etiquette of using the phone to extend and/or respond to invitations. Still, that was just a personal goal for reading this book. I think most people would find the book informative and interesting.

Technology in the modern age
By NPK
By using the telephone as a case study, Fischer examines the role of technology as an instrument in modern life. The first chapter provides a terrific overview of the academic literature on technology, though given the time span covered by the book, it does not address the Internet. The book is also unusual in that it actually relies on data when making claims about the telephone and the world that emerged around it.

How Fascism Ruled Women: Italy, 1922-1945, by Victoria de Grazia

"Italy has been made; now we need to make the Italians," goes a familiar Italian saying. Mussolini was the first head of state to include women in this mandate. How the fascist dictatorship defined the place of women in modern Italy and how women experienced the Duce's rule are the subjects of Victoria de Grazia's new work. De Grazia draws on an array of sources—memoirs and novels, the images, songs, and events of mass culture, as well as government statistics and archival reports. She offers a broad yet detailed characterization of Italian women's ambiguous and ambivalent experience of a regime that promised modernity, yet denied women emancipation.

Always attentive to the great diversity among women and careful to distinguish fascist rhetoric from the practices that really shaped daily existence, the author moves with ease from the public discourse about femininity to the images of women in propaganda and commercial culture. She analyzes fascist attempts to organize women and the ways in which Mussolini's intentions were received by women as social actors. The first study of women's experience under Italian fascism, this is also a history of the making of contemporary Italian society.

From Publishers Weekly
This noteworthy study reveals how the regime of Il Ducein web , Benito Mussolini, systematically sought to prevent Italian women from experiencing emancipation even as he heralded the advent of the "new Italian woman" ( nuova italiana ). Analyzing the deep conflict between modernity and traditional patriarchal authority, de Grazia defines the emerging ideals of Italian womanhood in the 1920s and '30s when Catholic, Fascist and commercial models of conduct competed to shape women's perceptions of themselves and of their society. The author, who teaches history at Rutgers, has much to say about the quasi-religious cult of Ducismo, about Fascism's "virilist" politics and about the exaggerated machismo of a regime that taxed celibate men to pay for child welfare programs. The product of meticulous research and deep contemplation, the book is an important contribution to women's studies. Illustrations.

From Library Journal
Extremely well researched and drawing upon a vast array of sources, this is the first full-length study of the experiences of women under Italian fascism. The author (history, Rutgers Univ.) places fascism's impact on women in the context of wider social, economic, and demographic changes arising out of World War I. Theorizing that Mussolini's government sought to "nationalize" women, she demonstrates how his regime affected women of different class, region, and occupation, how it contended with the Italian Catholic tradition, and how it used or created new kinds of social organizations to meet women's needs. De Grazia underscores that women were not simply passive victims of the dictatorship, however. Academics will be interested in the questions she provokes about women's experiences in mass politics in other European nations. The two years Thoreau spent at Walden Pond and the night he spent in the Concord jail are among the most familiar features of the American intellectual landscape. In this new biography, based on a reexamination of Thoreau's manuscripts and on a retracing of his trips, Robert Richardson offers a view of Thoreau's life and achievement in their full nineteenth century context.

A biography and biographer equal to this man and his life
By Thomas Lapins
As a young man my Holy Trinity was: Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman. Emerson's essays are pure poetry; Thoreau's "Walden" and "Civil Disobedience" became a blueprint on how to live and why to write; and Whitman's life and "Leaves Of Grass" taught me about myself.
"A Life Of The Mind" filled each page with the authenticity and richness of a life well lived. Thoreau, the humanness, the naturalist, the friend and son; the poet of the unraveling, entangled soul beating within the humdrum of everyday and ordinary life, leaps from every page. I have read other biographies on Thoreau which never captured the mind and writer of "Walden". Here the man and life equalled and qualified the literature.
Richardson is more than a biographer of Thoreau; he's made from the same stock. He didn't simply tell of a man and his life, he savored, and shared in the same poetics and struggles as the man he researched. The theme of Thoreau's life was an opportunity to express his own convictions and struggles.
It was while reading an anthology of Thoreau's work that I first understood why some poets and writers must write. I came to understand how every sentence could be layered with meaning and timelessness. After reading this biography I must reread my annotated "Walden". I must sit in my backyard amongst the leaves and flowers and shapes and densities I've not paid attention to in some time.

Window Into Thoreau's Mind and World
By Paul Maher Jr.
Robert D. Richardson takes the busy-bodied world of Thoreau and places each of his accomplishments into context starting with their respective intellectual origin. In the process of doing this, Richardson constructs the world of Thoreau's Concord and creates it for us vividly and realistically. This is by far the best Thoreau bio out there and serves a perfect book-end with his Emerson bio, The Mind On Fire.

Henry David Thoreau: A Life of the Mind
By djwatkins487
With such a sparse collection of Thoreau biographies out there, we're fortunate that Robert Richardson Jr. was able to paint such an intimate portrait of the man. As mentioned in the Preface of the book, this is an intellectual biography. It is a well composed account of Thoreau's life and his insatiable, systematic approach to learning. Through his exemplary writing, Richardson is able to explain the intricacies of Thoreau and the complex subjects that influenced him in a way that is simple to read and easy to understand. He breaks down such topics as Transcendentalism, Stoicism, German idealism, mysticism, and philosophy, combines them with the touch of Emerson, Whitman, Darwin, (William) Gilpin, and Goethe, and lastly mixes a little poetry, nature, art, and economy to explain the mind of Thoreau. I've read most of Thoreau's major writings. This book provided supplemental information regarding the message of those works, and methods in which Thoreau composed them that was enlightening. In reading this book, we not only learn an incredible amount about Thoreau, but we're also the beneficiaries of the authors' research into the various topics that influenced his subject. I opened the book with questions about Thoreau's genius and left with more questions about an array of topics for which I previously had little or no interest in. That, in my opinion, is the proof of a great read.

Living Downtown: The History of Residential Hotels in the United States, by Paul Groth

From the palace hotels of the elite to cheap lodging houses, residential hotels have been an element of American urban life for nearly two hundred years. Since 1870, however, they have been the target of an official war led by people whose concept of home does not include the hotel. Do these residences constitute an essential housing resource, or are they, as charged, a public nuisance?

Living Downtown, the first comprehensive social and cultural history of life in American residential hotels, adds a much-needed historical perspective to this ongoing debate. Creatively combining evidence from biographies, buildings and urban neighborhoods, workplace records, and housing policies, Paul Groth provides a definitive analysis of life in four price-differentiated types of downtown residence. He demonstrates that these hotels have played a valuable socioeconomic role as home to both long-term residents and temporary laborers. Also, the convenience of hotels has made them the residence of choice for a surprising number of Americans, from hobo author Boxcar Bertha to Calvin Coolidge.

Groth examines the social and cultural objections to hotel households and the increasing efforts to eliminate them, which have led to the seemingly irrational destruction of millions of such housing units since 1960. He argues convincingly that these efforts have been a leading contributor to urban homelessness.

This highly original and timely work aims to expand the concept of the American home and to recast accepted notions about the relationships among urban life, architecture, and the public management of residential environments.

From Library Journal
This fascinating book examines residential hotels, from luxurious palace hotels for rich people like the Ritz Tower in New York City to single-room-occupancy dwellings for the poor like the Sierra House above Big Al's North Beach nightclub in San Francisco. This is largely social history and sociology organized topically and chronologically, emphasizing the years from 1880 to 1930, when most American residential hotels were built and thrived. Groth is an architectural historian at the University of California at Berkeley, and his book is an outgrowth of his doctoral dissertation. But this is no dry and dusty tome. Instead, Groth breathes new life into the continuing battle over housing in America by praising, not burying, his topic. Recommended for academic collections.

"Complements Kenneth T. Jackson's history of suburban development, Crabgrass Frontier. . . . Will undoubtedly change historians' understanding of the urban landscape." -- Daniel Bluestone, Journal of American History

"Groth's lively and multifaceted analysis examining architecture, real estate development, social history, and planning thought (inspires appreciation for a land use that planners have too often dismissed as 'blight.' . . . Should be required reading for every planner and public official concerned with housing and urban revitalization. Living Downtown deserves a place on the bookshelf next to Herbert Gans' classic study, The Urban Villagers." -- Thomas W. Hanchett, Planning Perspective
