Enloe (government, Clark Univ.) is the author of several books dealing with women and the military (e.g., Bananas, Beaches, and Bases , Univ. of California Pr., 1990). In this work, Enloe explores the militarization of the concept of masculinity, which, she maintains, supports patriarchy and negatively affects women around the world. Her thoughts, including a gendered analysis of the North American Free Trade Agreement and a discussion on the military attitude toward prostitution, are cogent. Despite some unevenness in writing style and one or two assertions not adequately supported by data, this title is recommended for women's studies collections.

Here, Enloe (Government/Clark University) makes bold but often unsubstantiated assertions about the relationship between sexuality and militarism--as she seeks, not too persuasively, to chart changing post-cold-war sexual politics. For Enloe, a committed feminist, gender is all as she discusses subjects ranging from the working conditions of Filipina servants in Kuwait and the role of women in the Gulf War to government-sanctioned prostitution for the military. In each situation, she says, women have been affected by the way ``in which masculinity provided fodder for earlier militarization.'' To Enloe, gender-definition goes beyond mere prejudice or custom; it's a deliberate product of sociopolitical policy: ``masculinity being remade for the sake of controlling the society at large.'' In her view, both sides in the cold war deliberately used sexuality to meet their goals by providing prostitutes and sexual R&R for their armed forces; by encouraging women to stay home or take low-paying jobs as a form of ``patriotic sacrifice''; and by enacting policies that forced women into ``low-waged'' jobs--by making, for example, ``tourism a partner for regional anti-Communism'' in the Caribbean. With the cold war over, Enloe sees some encouraging signs of a future in which masculinity won't be shaped by militarism: The UN peacekeeping force ``inspires optimism because it seems to perform military duties without being militaristic''; Danish women have organized against the Maastricht treaty; more women are in armed services; and women's movements are growing in Kuwait, the Philippines, and even in Serbia. Rambling and repetitive polemic that could have something important to say but by substituting assertion and anecdote for rigorous analysis, doesn't. The life and lesson of Marcus Garvey is a excellent book. Mr. Garvey was a genious before his time, not a racist but a man who wanted equal opportunity for his people. In this book Mr. Garvey guides us through life lessons with spiritual insight and cunning details of how to conduct yourself in business and in personal life. He was Malcolm X before Malcolm X, he was Martin Luther King before Martin Luther King. He had a vision,a plan, and a will to succeed by any means necessary. This book is sure to broaden your intelluct and make you a better overall person!!!!

Something for Everyone

This text makes good use of the entire Garvey Papers collection and lifts what are the central points from that voluminous work with an ease that can only be done by those who are well versed.
Garvey was not the first to deal with African repatriation,business,organization and pride but he was the most successful at building a mass movement. His movement comprised of many talented and well versed individuals some of who laid the foundation on which Garvey would grow some two decades later.
Garvey's genius is found not in his views but in his timely manner of execution. He should be remembered as one of our great messengers brought forth from days of old, reminding us that we have a home,heritage and culture that is comparable to any people in the entire world.
This text illuminates that side of a man who came from a little island named Jamaica and shook the entire world with one phrase, one flag, one organization, one vision, one destiny and one aim!!!

This was the best book I bought all year. I learned a lot from this writings. He was an aggressive visionary for the African Diaspora. Some of it is outdated but majority of this book is able shedding the stigma of slavery. I have never read and re-read a book so fast and so many times.

A must for anyone serious about comparative politics

This is one of the books where it all started... Comparative Politics scholars treating their subject matter with the soundness and analytical rigor only found, before, in the realm of American Politics. And yet, the book is remarkably accessible. So much that any modestly committed undergraduate should be able to follow most of the argument. The chapters on the UK and France seem especially persuasive.
Formally oriented scholars may feel tempted to dismiss the material as not formal enough. Doing so is missing the point of the book, though. This book is, above all, an *invitation* to do Comparative Politics in a manner consistent with the *Science* in Political Science. Still, more experienced --and demanding-- readers, will not be disappointed by Tsebelis's journal articles.

Why we need institutions

Prof. Tsebelis' Nested Games: Rational Choice in Comparative Politics (California Series on Social Choice and Political Economy) is something rare in political science texts: it is both accessible to novices in political science and makes significant contributions to the literature. As a novice in the field, I really appreciate how Tsebelis manages to explain his methodology and not entangle the reader in too much math or logic. As for the substance, Tsebelis makes a powerful case for the fact that institutions must be considered in rational choice analysis. Institutions create constraints and rules that "nest" game theory analysis in non-obvious ways. Perhaps the best thing I can say about the book is that it makes several interesting, realistic, and non-obvious points (which can't be said for some of the rest of the literature).

RATIONAL CHOICE: EMANCIPATING THE FREE MAN?

In his book Nested Games: Rational Choice in Comparative Politics George Tsebelis sets out to solve the puzzle why `rational' human beings frequently make seemingly `suboptimal' choices. Moreover, like all other rational choice analyses, Tsebelis' work aims to "provide a systematic way to deal with complicated political phenomenon," (p. 17). Yet whereas Tsebelis does a good job in convincingly accounting for the first puzzle, his general arguments for the rational choice analysis are hardly helpful. In other words, his work is a contribution to the rational choice literature yet not to comparative politics.

Tsebelis argues that cases of apparently suboptimal choices are in fact cases of disagreement between `the actor' and `the observer': "while the observer focuses attention on only one game, the actor is involved in a whole network of games" - what he calls nested games (pp. 6-7). What appears suboptimal from the perspective of only one game is in fact optimal when the whole network of games is considered. Besides the multiplicity of the games, the differences in the long- and short-term utilities lead actors and observers to reach at different equilibria for the same games. "The choice of long-term instead of short-term interests is the most important characteristic of human behavior," (p. 162); yet most observers miss this point and equivocally base their analyses on the short-term equilibrium which is drived from the calculations of short-term utilities. In that respect, Tsebelis' arguments on the importance of iterations, strategic thinking, and multiple games deserves appreciation, for it expands the scope of our understanding seemingly `irrational' or `unselfish' decisions.

However, like most other rational choice analyses, George Tsebelis' arguments for the importance of rational choice models in comparative politics hardly convince the reader, because they are afflicted with the same ailment: they become helpful when we are almost done! The problem with rational choice analyses is that we need to give them too much before we start benefiting from them. Tsebelis admits that rational choice is a better approach to situations in which "actors' identity and goals are established and the rules of the interaction are precise and known to the interacting agent"; and rational choice explanations become less applicable "as the actors' goals become fuzzy, or as the rules of the interaction become more fluid and imprecise." (pp. 32-33). In real life, we hardly have precise answers to the questions about the identity and goals of the actors. As political scientist, our main problem is not so much to solve the political equations as to first establish them. Yet what rational chioce analyses say is, "give me the equation and I'll give you the answer". And our answer is "we don't have it yet!'. Thus, rational choice explanations hardly help us in solving our primary problems in answering such questions as `who are the actor?', `what are their exact goals?', `which are the effective institutions?', `what are the rules of the games?' and so on. It would be nice if rational choice steps in a bit earlier.

a theoretically-sophisticated ethnography

As far as I know the first ethnography of the Nuer since Evans Pritchard. Hutchinson draws on some serious field work and makes good use of Marx and Simmel, while paying careful attention to gender as well as the violence visited upon the Nuer over the last century.

I ordered this book on the 3rd of April. I did not receive the book until the 9th of May. I ordered the book on April third because I needed to read it for class. The assignment has since passed, and I didn't have the book!. I am very upset that the shipping took so long and I would not do business with this person again

Quite well written with thorough support

This is an interesting book describing the unique history of Chicana women. Although it contains many opinions, the diversity of the range of perspectives really enhances the support for the conclusions drawn. Moreover, it has sufficient studiy periods, ranging over three centuries. The book gives a historical analysis of how the power relations and resistance dominated.

About the Author
Mahmoud Darwish has lived most of his life in Lebanon and Palestine. The author of fourteen volumes of poetry and numerous prose works, he now lives in Paris. Ibrahim Muhawi is coauthor and translator of Speak Bird, Speak Again: Palestinian Arab Folktales (California, 1988) and Journal of an Ordinary Grief (Archipelago Books, 2010), for which he won the PEN Translation Prize. He is currently a Visiting Professor of Folklore and Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley.

Obscurity and clarity

"The obscure heaps on the obscure, rubs against itself, and ignites into clarity."

This quote epitomizes my experience of this book. Although technically written in prose, this book is a poetic journey through Mahmoud Darwish's experience as a displaced Palestinian of the 1982 bombardment of Beirut. Darwish is one of the most renown poets in the Arabic speaking world, and even in prose his words and metaphors strike deep.

The episodes in this book range from highly personal experiences of trauma to passionate political tirades - into the dream world and back to a reality that feels like a nightmare. It is a stunning look at the range of emotions of wartime trauma, from the sudden importance of simple acts like making coffee to the feeling of walking down the middle of an empty street hoping for the quick death of being caught by a shell rather than the slow death of being crushed under a building turned to rubble. The author's Palestinian identity adds the tension of being caught in the midst of a war, but with no true nationality or homeland.

As the book progresses, the language and metaphors become increasingly edgy and jumbled, leading to a sense of increased confusion and inability to cope with the violence of circumstances. This book is not for the faint of heart (nor for readers who find symbolist poetry especially frustrating). But it is a stunning window into the Palestinian identity and the trauma of war - and even the passages that seem dense with obscurity eventually ignite into an overall sense of clarity.

To provide the reader with a clearer sense of the evolution of peasant-state relations over almost a forty-year period and to highlight the dramatic changes that have taken place since 1978,1 have divided my analysis into two parts: Chapters 2 through 7 are on Maoist China, and chapters 8 and 9 are on post-Mao China. The first part examines the state's grain policies and patterns of local politics that emerged during the highly collectivized Maoist period, when the state closed free grain markets and established the system of unified purchase and sales (tonggou tongxiao). The second part describes the new methods for the production and division of the harvest after 1978, when the government decollectivized agriculture and abolished its unified procurement program.

About the Author
Jean C. Oi is the William Haas Professor in Chinese Politics in the department of political science and a senior fellow of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. Oi is the founding director of the China Program at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. She leads Stanford's China Initiative, and is the Lee Shau Kee Director of the Stanford Center at Peking University. Oi directed Stanford's Center for East Asian Studies from 1998 to 2005.

a fine book, intelligent theory backed by strong research

Oi's book, which adopts a clientist model of rural Chinese politics is a well supported, and strongly argued analysis backed by extensive interviews with former participants at all levels of Chinese rural politics. An added pleasure for the student of Chinese is Oi's consistent use of "pinyin" Chinese equivalents of English terms such as "production brigade" which add color to the book's already fine prose.
