The Poetics of Military Occupation: Mzeina Allegories of Bedouin Identity Under Isræli and Egyptian Rule, by Smadar Lavie

The romantic, nineteenth-century image of the Bedouin as fierce, independent nomads on camelback racing across an endless desert persists in the West. Yet since the era of Ottoman rule, the Mzeina Bedouin of the South Sinai desert have lived under foreign occupation. For the last forty years Bedouin land has been a political football, tossed back and forth between Israel and Egypt at least five times.

Review
"More than an anthropological study, the book describes in moving and often humorous detail the ways in which the Bedouin coexist with the expressions of modern culture."--"The Washington Post Book World

From the Inside Flap
"Smadar Lavie, in creating this beautiful book, has accomplished something wonderful. An Iraeli Jew, she sojourned among the Mzeina Bedouin with an open heart and comprehending spirit . . . [and] deeply engaged their way of life and their oral literature."—Maxime Rodinson, Directeur d'Etudes, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes

"Speaking about a region where conflict, for all involved, has deepened divisions, separating 'us' from 'them,' Smadar Lavie courageously seeks out the paradoxes and ambiguities in everyday life."—Renato Rosaldo, Stanford University

If only all occupations bore such fruit ...
By Marco Buendia
The author, an Israeli archaeologist, lived with a Bedouin tribe in the Sinai during the period the peninsula was occupied by the Israelis.

Not just an archaeologist, but a woman archaeologist. Yet the author had immediate access to almost all the areas of life and folkways of both sexes. It worked. People simply accepted it. Because of the machismo of the Israelis? Because the author simply took the initiative?

In any event, her ostensible object of study were the verses composed by this still traditional and nomadic people. These verses are reprinted here, with translation, of course. But readers will learn all sorts of things about the Bedouins, at the end of the specific and characteristic existence of that people, that they are unlikely to learn elsewhere. They need not be interested in traditional poetry, especially.

There is certain academic quality to the text, but not so much as to impair it in the ways with which we are all too familiar.

One wonders, in retrospect, if the Bedouin and the Sinai (I mean the land itself, the fauna and flora) wouldn't have been better off if the Israelis had remained. A question impossible to answer and probably profitless to ask.

I read this book in college, and it was my favorite of ALL of the ethnographies I've had to read. It was interesting and heart-wrenching and uplifting all at the same time. That's what the study of humanity is supposed to be about, right?

Emerson: The Mind on Fire, by Robert D. Richardson Jr.

Ralph Waldo Emerson is one of the most important figures in the history of American thought, religion, and literature. The vitality of his writings and the unsettling power of his example continue to influence us more than a hundred years after his death. Now Robert D. Richardson Jr. brings to life an Emerson very different from the old stereotype of the passionless Sage of Concord. Drawing on a vast amount of new material, including correspondence among the Emerson brothers, Richardson gives us a rewarding intellectual biography that is also a portrait of the whole man.

These pages present a young suitor, a grief-stricken widower, an affectionate father, and a man with an abiding genius for friendship. The great spokesman for individualism and self-reliance turns out to have been a good neighbor, an activist citizen, a loyal brother. Here is an Emerson who knew how to laugh, who was self-doubting as well as self-reliant, and who became the greatest intellectual adventurer of his age.

Richardson has, as much as possible, let Emerson speak for himself through his published works, his many journals and notebooks, his letters, his reported conversations. This is not merely a study of Emerson's writing and his influence on others; it is Emerson's life as he experienced it. We see the failed minister, the struggling writer, the political reformer, the poetic liberator.

The Emerson of this book not only influenced Thoreau, Fuller, Whitman, Dickinson, and Frost, he also inspired Nietzsche, William James, Baudelaire, Marcel Proust, Virginia Woolf, and Jorge Luis Borges. Emerson's timeliness is persistent and striking: his insistence that literature and science are not separate cultures, his emphasis on the worth of every individual, his respect for nature.

Richardson gives careful attention to the enormous range of Emerson's readings—from Persian poets to George Sand—and to his many friendships and personal encounters—from Mary Moody Emerson to the Cherokee chiefs in Boston—evoking both the man and the times in which he lived. Throughout this book, Emerson's unquenchable vitality reaches across the decades, and his hold on us endures.

From Publishers Weekly
The maverick intellectual life of Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-82) is the focus of this imposing, highly erudite biography. In 1832, Emerson resigned his Boston ministry to pursue a career as an essayist, orator and poet, delivering more than 1500 lectures in his lifetime, including "The American Scholar" (1837), and publishing essays such as Nature (1836) and Representative Men (1850). As America's foremost prophet of individual experience, he was also a founder of the Transcendentalist Club, editor of the transcendentalist magazine, The Dial, and spokesman for many reformist causes. Drawing on unpublished personal journals, correspondence and lectures, Richardson (Henry Thoreau: A Life of the Mind) charts, in exacting detail, the minutia of Emerson's daily life in Concord, Mass., and extensive travels; the literature and philosophy he read over several decades and how his reading shaped his steadily evolving intellect. Although the nuances of Emerson's personality are eclipsed by textual analysis, Richardson balances the often chilling puritanism of Emerson's writing with a portrait of the man as hungry for friendship, maintaining close relationships with Carlisle, Thoreau, Bronson Alcott and Margaret Fuller; and whose icy doctrine of individualism reflects the loneliness caused by the premature deaths of his beloved first wife, his two younger brothers and numerous friends.

From Library Journal
Using freshly available materials on Emerson, Richardson (Henry Thoreau: A Life of the Mind, LJ 8/86) here fashions a lively intellectual biography of the "sage of Concord." In exacting detail, the author traces the development of Emerson's great imagination from his early student days at Harvard to his later associations with Coleridge and Carlyle. Through a study of Emerson's wide-ranging reading, Richardson reveals the origins of key Emersonian doctrines such as self-reliance, the transcendence of the soul, and the mind as an ever-erupting volcano. The great value of the biography lies in its exploration of the influences of Coleridge, Goethe, Madame de Stael, and Hindu thought on Emerson. While the intimate detail in which Emerson's life is examined is reminiscent of the pedantry of much late 19th-century American biography, Richardson offers a captivating account of the originality, creativity, and genius of the American Coleridge. This biography goes beyond John Mc-Aleer's Emerson: Days of Encounter (LJ 8/84). Recommended for large public libraries and academic collections.

From Booklist
Unlike Thoreau, Emerson never built a cabin on the shores of Walden Pond. But Richardson (author of a prizewinning biography of Thoreau) shows how Emerson's volcanic genius ignited flames of kindred enthusiasm in Thoreau, Whitman, Fuller, and other gifted Americans. Careful analysis of his vast reading reveals how Emerson drew inspiration from the world's classic literature yet maintained a fierce self-reliance that still defines one of the primary themes of our national culture. As in his biography of Thoreau, Richardson focuses principally on his subject's inner life, the life of his mind and spirit. But in this subtle portrayal of Emerson the thinker, the reader also sees the clearly limned portrait of Emerson the social activist, outraged by slavery and by oppressive Indian policies. Nor is the focus so narrowly cerebral that the reader does not feel the personal tragedy in the deaths of Emerson's first wife and son. Indeed, by referring to many previously unavailable private letters and manuscripts, Richardson sheds light on both Emerson's emotions and his intellect. A masterful work, this biography will attract the attention of scholars and serious general readers for decades. Bryce Christensen

Amazing book. Very in-depth. Opens a big world to additional books too.
By Jim Richmond
This is simple an amazing biography. It of course gives the details of Emerson's life, but it also help get into the mind of Emerson. I respected him before, but now, even more so. He is a real person to me now, and I feel as though I knew him. The book shows the changes in his life, and we can see and relate to this, based on our own changes as we go through life.

The avid reader that Emerson was, is shared here it great detail. I have no idea how many books are mentioned, but it's likely in the hundreds. There are summaries of the books' contents, and how they might have appealed to Emerson. I find it a great launch point for future books to explore. And these would be considered very obscure by today's standards. So this great book - beyond exploring the life of RW Emerson - is also the perfect launchpoint for discovering other books and authors. And these are just ordinary ones, they are the great thinkers of yesteryear. If only people would learn more about these wonderfully deep individuals.

When the genius of biography meets the genius of literature
By Thomas Lapins
Mr. Richardson's 'Thoreau A Life of the Mind' was not only the best biography I've read on Thoreau, but one of the most exhilerating and enlightening reading experiences of my life. So I decided to read his 'Emerson The Mind on Fire.' And it was every bit as intimate and intelligent.

There are times you feel that you're intruding upon Waldo and Henry on one of their walks. It was an endless stroll of two intellectuals and humanists on the path of being very human. Each of the one hundred chapters (both books) are kept short, which helps move the reader from topic to topic without ever feeling put upon (too much detail can drag what is otherwise very interesting.) Though, for me personally, I would love to savor every moment these two great men shared. I don't think I could ever get bored.

Emerson has many close friends with whom one gets to know intimately. His personal address book was a whose whose of literary and intellectual greats.

The relationship between Emerson and his second wife, Lidian, is of great interest. She was also intellectual and as much a partner in life as she was a wife. Her presence is everywhere in Emerson's life.

Emerson's essays are pure poetry. And the behind the scene snippets into how they became a part of his legacy was both insightful and relevant to the day to day interactions and causes he committed himself. His transformation from the unremarkable child into the neverending 'student' of self-education and commitment to social conscience throughout his entire adult life is one to be admired.

Mr. Richardson is one of the best biographers of nineteenth century literaries. He is truly one with his topic.

The Best of the Best
By Dr. D. E. McClean
Robert Richardson's biography of Emerson is superb. Though, as Richardson reminds us, Emerson did not like superlative language when precise and adequate language would do, it is the case that at times the superlative, the precise and the adequate converge (as, in fact, they often did in Emerson's writings). Richardson's biography is indeed superb in its unfolding of Emerson's life -- the loves, the friendships, the losses, the intellectual and spiritual hunger, the religious quest, the writers in America, in Europe, in Persia and elsewhere to whom Emerson owed and acknowledged debts, the grasping at and for a world, the determination of a single, brilliant human being to find his way and to see his life, and all individual lives, as imbued with the divine and thus worth living.
The book is also superbly written. Each short chapter offers enough substantive insight to urge the reader into the next. It is a long book, but not long-winded. Richardson provides the reader with some morsel of insight in a few pages of narrative, and then offers a rest to digest what has been said. His placement of quotations from Emerson's journals, essays and other works is brilliant, offering the reader a useful sketch of Emerson's metaphysics and ethics. In my own case, this has allowed time to reach for other literature more fully descriptive of the events or scenes offered in a particular chapter, or to reread chunks of Emerson's writings while moving through the biography. The book is a useful tool not merely for a study of Emerson's life but for a study of Transcendentalism and of the interplay of ideas across the Atlantic that shaped American thought in so many ways. One sees more clearly where and how such writers as Nietzsche and Thoreau obtained the seeds of their own truths from Emerson's works and thoughts.
Richardson has set the standard for the writing of future biographies. Again, simply superb.

Ansel Adams and the American Landscape: A Biography, by Jonathan Spaulding

Working with a cumbersome 8 x 10 field camera, Ansel Adams (1902-1984) created some of the most dramatic and influential photographs ever made of the American West. His majestic landscapes and evocative still lifes conveyed a vision of an idealized America that helped inspire the wilderness conservation movement. Yet despite these accomplishments, Adams has been the least studied of our most important photographers. Now Jonathan Spaulding provides the first full biography of the artist and a critical analysis of his life's work.

Refuting the myth of a solitary and carefree wilderness explorer, Spaulding portrays a man grappling with the question of how art and nature intersect in the modern world. He addresses the contradictions the photographer faced as both artist and activist: his struggle to balance art and commercialism; his desire to create art, yet enjoy bourgeois comforts; his simultaneous support for economic development, tourism, and wilderness preservation.

Spaulding places Adams's work in the context of modernism and the other major developments in twentieth-century art and ideas. He examines his debt to the pioneering art photographers Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen, and his response to later artists. He traces Adams's growth as an environmental activist and discusses his use of photography to further the cause of conservation.

Questions regarding the meaning and place of wilderness in modern culture remain with us today. By analyzing these issues through Adams's life and work, this book is a telling portrait of one of the century's greatest photographers and a reflection of our changing attitudes about the natural world.

Ansel Adams (1902-1984) created some of the most influential photographs ever made; he was one of this century's leading exponents of environmental values. Writer and scholar Spaulding casts a broad net in this fine biography; it is a well-rounded portrait of the man, an analysis of his work and an exploration of the development of photography as a fine art. As a youth, Adams had rigorous piano training that proved invaluable in his career, giving him intensely developed work habits and an insatiable quest for technical excellence. Spaulding follows Adams through his meeting with Alfred Steiglitz and his early shows, his collaboration with Mary Austin and Georgia O'Keeffe, his long friendship with Beaumont and Nancy Newhall (she collaborated with him on later books) and his deep involvement with the Sierra Club. A final, fitting tribute came a year after his death when a peak in Yosemite was officially named Mount Ansel Adams. Photos.

From Library Journal
It seems that every third family in America has an Ansel Adams (1902-84) poster on the wall, images that were difficult to make but easy to love. Adams's images portray a romanticized and unspoiled Western American landscape omitting track houses, immigrant laborers, open-pit mines, timber clear-cutting, and traffic jams created by recreational vehicles in our national parks. As a member of the purist f/64 group, he applied considerable technical knowledge to portray the beauty of simple, ordinary things, and he has had incalculable influence on the public's appreciation of such otherworldly concepts as our need for solitude, the sacredness of untouched wilderness, and the fragility of nature. This is not the first book examining Adams's life and the evolution of his aesthetics, but it does provide significant discussion of his family life, his conflicts with David Brower's increasingly aggressive Sierra Club, Adams's propaganda work for the war-time federal government, and his photography of the Japanese internment camp at Manzanar. Overall, independent scholar Spaulding has presented a highly readable account of Adams's life, including thorough notes and an excellent bibliography. An excellent biography
By Tom Emerson
Jonathan Spaulding's biography of Ansel Adams (or AA as people referred to him) provides a counterpoint to Mary Street Alinder's. While Alinder shows us Adams the Man first, with the influence of the American West and the Environmental Movement in a supporting role, these forces are prominent in Spaulding's work.
This is not to say that Spaulding does not talk about AA's private life, a pre-requisite for any biography, but does so only as it relates to AA's pursuit of photography and environmental causes. Absent, for example, are details of his relationship with his wife Virginia (which was quite complex: someone needs to write a biography of Virgina Best Adams in a way that Stacy Schiff wrote of Vera Nabokov) and the hard relationship with his children.
What Spaulding gives us instead is a very detailed account of the evolution of Adams' photographic vision and technique, and the influence of the American West on it. Through this you find his relationship to other important photographers and their influence on him and his styles: Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, and many others. We also see the influence of Western expansion throughout the first half of the 20th century, especially after WWII. In particular the seeming incongruity of AA producing pictures drawing people to the Western national parks while campaigning with the Sierra Club to limit the impact of tourists on Nature is discussed. The battle, falling out, and eventual reconciliation between Adams and David Brower is also detailed
If you are most interested in AA's life, read his autobiography or Alinder's biographry. If you want to know more about his influences and those things that he influenced, Spaulding's book is an excellent and readable choice. The book is heavily footnoted, with over 80 pages of notes, and contains a useful bibliography for anyone wishing to research further Adams' very interesting life.
As a footnote, the book does not include any pictures whose copyright is held by the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust, which refused to grant permission.

Superlative Biography
By Fred M. Blum
Ansel Adams and the American Landscape: A Biography by Jonathan Spaulding is a superlative biography of one of America's true icons. Spaulding does a magnificent job describing the evolution of Adams as a photographer, environmentalist and individual. In this, the book is more than just Adams' biography, but a history of the environmental movement and photography in America.
The only significant disappointment was the inability of Spaulding to utilize the actual Adams pictures when describing their creation. For instance, his description of the creation of Moon over Hernandez would have greatly benefitted from the ability of the reader to actually see the picture. However, unfortunately he was unable to obtain permission to utilize the photographs. While this is not Spaldings fault, it does limit the impact the of the narrative.
The most interesting part of the book was the evolution of 20th Century American photography. Adams cannot be separated from the development of photography in American and his life touched most of the great American photographers. Adams was constantly in conflict with many of them over the issue of quality versus the benefits of photojournalism. Adams saw photography as a high art form and was at odds with those who saw it as more as a story telling devise.
For those that are interested in Adams, environmentalism or photography this book is a must.

Sarmiento: Author of a NationFrom University of California Press

Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (1811-1888) was—and continues to be—one of the most important and controversial figures in Latin American history. Diplomat, statesman, educator, visionary, and president of Argentina from 1868 to 1874, he also produced two avowed masterpieces of Spanish prose—Facundo and Recuerdos de Provincia. He saw himself as the standard-bearer of European liberalism in Spanish America and the architect of a nation built on its ideals. Almost all of the great shapers of intellectual life in Latin America have had to reckon with his visions of culture and progress.

First of its kind in English, this collection of 22 essays by preeminent interpreters of Latin American culture tackles the paradox of the Sarmiento legacy—his ambitious attempt to reshape Argentina into a modern, export economy society set against his unrivaled position at the center of Spanish American letters—and shows the ways in which the political and literary projects are inextricably linked. Since Sarmiento's legacy continues to define contemporary ideologies, this book is certain to provoke debates among students of Latin American history, politics, and culture.

Independent Spirits: Women Painters of the American West, 1890-1945, by Patricia Trenton

Independent Spirits brings to vivid life the West as seen through the eyes of women painters from 1890 to the end of World War II. Expert scholars and curators identify long-lost talent and reveal how these women were formidable cultural innovators as well as agitators for the rights of artists and women during a period of extraordinary development.

Abundantly illustrated, with over one-hundred color plates, this book is a rich compendium of Western art by women, including those of Native American, African, Mexican, and Asian descent. The essays examine the many economic, social, and political forces that shaped this art over years of pivotal change. The West's dynamic growth altered the role of women, often allowing new avenues of opportunity within the prevailing Anglo culture. At the same time, boundaries of femininity were pushed earlier and further than in other parts of the country.

Women artists in the West painted a wide range of subjects, and their work embraced a variety of styles: Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism, Surrealism. Some women championed modern art as gallery owners, collectors, and critics, while others were educators and curators. All played an important role in gaining the acceptance of women as men's peers in artistic communities, and their independent spirit resonates in studios and galleries throughout the country today.

From Library Journal
This highly readable and engagingly illustrated exhibition catalog fulfills a dual purpose?to retrieve lost talent from among the largely unknown and strikingly diverse group of Western women painters and to probe their emergence as professionals in the previously male-dominated U.S. art world. Ten essays by female curators and academicians examine the social, economic, intellectual, and political forces affecting this period of profound change. One-third of the book focuses on California, with additional individual essays on the Northwest, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Plains. The inclusion of Native, Mexican, African, and Asian American painters adds balance and breadth. As the first comprehensive scholarly survey to single out Western women artists, the work makes an important contribution to studies of the West, U.S. cultural history, and women's history.?Russell T. Clement, Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville

From Booklist
Can you name three women painters of the American West working between 1890 and 1945? We could only come up with one, Georgia O'Keeffe, so we're thrilled with this gorgeous and surprising volume. Editor Trenton and her contributors, a group as meticulous in their research as they are passionate and articulate in their prose, have reclaimed the neglected work of a great number of women artists who lived in and drew inspiration from the spectacular and demanding beauty of California, the Northwest, the Great Plains, the Rockies, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. These women artists were, indeed, "independent spirits," bucking traditional gender roles to devote themselves to their highly original art. Their ranks included the impressionist Donna Schuster as well as more startling talents such as Z. Vanessa Helder, who painted dams and quarries; Louise Crow and Tonita Pena, who interpreted Pueblo life; Mabel Frazer, who captured the drama and hard labor of life in the Rockies; and mystics such as Agnes Pelton, who painted ravishing, spiritually motivated abstractions. An exceptional blend of biography and art history, this fine volume belongs in all American art collections. Donna Seaman

From the Inside Flap
"The history of women's participation in the westward expansion has often been subsumed into myths of pioneers and cowgirls. Independent Spirits offers convincing evidence of real women's contributions to the cultural life of the American West. Many of the names may be unfamiliar, but the stories can't help but transform our idea of history. An accessible and informative volume."—Whitney Chadwick, Professor of Art History, San Francisco State University

"Independent Spirits offers the first step in documenting the achievements and innovations of women in the pictorial arts. The history of Western American painting can never again be examined without the consideration of women in that development."—William Gerdts, Professor of Art History, The Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York

"This book makes available the material we need to begin rethinking the West's cultural history. The art history of the region—like the general histories of the West itself—has long concentrated on the work of men. With tightly focused regional essays, fresh photographic illustrations, and reproductions of many little-known works of art, this book establishes women as central figures in the creation of American art."—Martha Sandweiss, Director of the Mead Art Museum, Amherst College

"At last there is for art of the American West a serious diversion from the enduring continuum of male-oriented surveys. In this handsome volume, for the first time, women's art is copiously revealed and duly celebrated. Their persistent and remarkable creative forces have played a powerful part in interpreting Western life and evolving regional tastes. Here we finally see women's rightful place in the Western creative saga."—Peter Hassrick, Director, Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Wyoming

The artist as pioneer
By J. golden
This book about women painters of American West from 1890 to 1945 shows and talks about art and paintings. Reading its words and seeing its paintings was an experience over which I may not get. From the moment I opened the book I entered a new world of color landscape shapes figures flowers abstractions and movement. How did so many creative and talented people escape historical recognition and fame? Many of the artists in this book had to wage war with themselves, family, society and some won - mostly those with financial means, time to themselves, art education, human support and they succeeded as free spirits in the world of art. Independent Spirits is a study of pioneers who expressed themselves using artists' tools. For most fame eluded them while they made history by painting, teaching, building of museums and art schools, encouragement of public interest in visual arts and redefinition of feminine art.
Myra Miller of the Great Plains (1882 to 1961) painted game birds which she froze and painted in a cold room in the winter. She set up her own still lifes of birds and guns on panels and the paintings were 2' x4'. The subjects became the essential and yet ordinary stuff of life rendered so painstakingly as beautiful to behold, characteristic of her world and perhaps bounty for the family table.
Why the West? Why did O'Keefe feel compelled as an artist to leave the city and apartment dwelling for the open space of the west?
Independent Spirits tells of women set free to live creative lives determined to express record persevere and interpret what they saw - for themselves and for unknown and unseen viewers.

A Lost World of Women Artists
By Diana Maria Nemi
As someone who teaches the History of Women Artists on the college level, this book is a valuable addition to my library of books devoted to this topic. I was aware of some of the women featured in this book, but most of these individuals are absolutely new to me. There is no question that these professional women possessed the drive and the talent to establish interesting careers, and yet most of them fell into obscurity except perhaps on the regional level. The history of Modern American Art has generally been associated with the east coast but this book is a revelation and a very juicy one at that. So many different visions expressed with competence and flare. Anyone interested in the development of 20th century painting and unearthing the work of women artists who have been sidelined by time and male dominance, this book will provide some serious pleasure.

Important addition to art libary
By A. Garavaglia
One of the few books on this specific subject, it is both enlightening and informative. A good read for those looking to get out of the narrow history of 20th century American artists that predominately covers men. Both inspiring and sad to see these great talents, most of them overlooked because of gender. A lesson and insight for historians and artists male and female alike. Recommended.

Dark Sweat, White Gold: California Farm Workers, Cotton, and the New Deal, by Devra Weber

In her incisive analysis of the shaping of California's agricultural work force, Devra Weber shows how the cultural background of Mexican and, later, Anglo-American workers, combined with the structure of capitalist cotton production and New Deal politics, forging a new form of labor relations. She pays particular attention to Mexican field workers and their organized struggles, including the famous strikes of 1933.

Weber's perceptive examination of the relationships between economic structure, human agency, and the state, as well as her discussions of the crucial role of women in both Mexican and Anglo working-class life, make her book a valuable contribution to labor, agriculture, Chicano, Mexican, and California history.

California and the New Deal
By Gio
This is another title I've instantly ordered based on a recommendation from the amazons, which was in turn based on my review of Factories in the Fields. This is a much more recent book treating many of the same themes, using different sources. Here's what the editorial description offers:

Anyone interested in comprehensive immigration reform should study this and other books about farm labor systems of the past with great care. The Bush administration's proposal to create a system of temporary labor visas is nothing new; it's merely a reprisal of the worst and least successful abuses of the past.

Great Read

Very interesting and needs to be read by those who have produce on their tables.

Life has not changed for many Mexican's in the southwest, etc. A read for those who truly believe in advocacy for uplifting people out of poverty.

Where are the protest? Where is the American public when they are on television speaking about human rights all over the world and they do not even look in their back yard.

The Seed and the Soil: Gender and Cosmology in Turkish Village Society (Comparative Studies on Muslim Societies), by Carol Delaney

How do the metaphors we use to describe procreation affect our view of the relative worth of each gender? Carol Delaney discloses the powerful meanings condensed in the seemingly innocent images of "seed" and "soil." Drawing on her work in a small Turkish village of Sunni Muslims, she shows us that the images are categorically different, hierarchically ordered, and unequally valued.

The ways in which the creation of a child is understood in Turkey furnish a key to understanding a whole range of Turkish attitudes toward sexuality and gender, honor and shame, authority and submission, time and space, inside and outside, open and closed. Moreover, the symbols and meanings by which they represent procreation provide the means for understanding relationships between such seemingly disparate elements as the body, family, house, village, nation, this-world and other-world. Delaney points out that these symbols do not embellish reality; they provide the key to a particular conception of it, a conception that gives coherence to social life. The patterns revealed are not distinctly Turkish; they also comment on some of our own deeply-held assumptions and values about procreation.

Lively look at one Turkish Village's Idealogies
By Quail covey mom
A hearty read with photos to back up fieldwork. Covers issues of marriage, relationships, authority, bodies, land, food, house, village, life/death, religion in relation to procreation.
Interesting, engaging and easily comprehended, it works well in a study of anthropology of one Middle Eastern way of life. Feminist issues, religious idealogies, and an intense study of one village causes the author to question along with the reader such basic tenets as Freud's motivations and the meaning/uses of words such as "seed."
A timeless vision of a rich society.

Outstanding book
By A Customer
Carol Delaney's book is outstanding for a description of cross cultural field work and for an interpretation of the social organization and beliefs in a Muslim community in Turkey. The ideas she presents give the reader pause for thought, because there are many implications for the social fabric.

UNESCO General History of Africa, Vol. V, Abridged Edition: Africa from the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth Century (v. 5), by B. A. Ogot

Volume V of this acclaimed series is now available in an abridged paperback edition. The result of years of work by scholars from all over the world, The UNESCO General History of Africa reflects how the different peoples of Africa view their civilizations and shows the historical relationships between the various parts of the continent. Historical connections with other continents demonstrate Africa's contribution to the development of human civilization. Each volume is lavishly illustrated and contains a comprehensive bibliography.

This fifth volume of the acclaimed series covers the history of the continent from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the close of the eighteenth century in which two themes emerge: first, the continuing internal evolution of the states and cultures of Africa during this period; second, the increasing involvement of Africa in external trade—with major but unforeseen consequences for the whole world.

In North Africa, we see the Ottomans conquer Egypt. South of the Sahara, some of the larger, older states collapse, and new power bases emerge. Traditional religions continue to coexist with both Christianity (suffering setbacks) and Islam (in the ascendancy). Along the coast, particularly of West Africa, Europeans establish a trading network which, with the development of New World plantation agriculture, becomes the focus of the international slave trade. The immediate consequences of this trade for Africa are explored, and it is argued that the long-term global consequences include the foundation of the present world-economy with all its built-in inequalities.

Final Grade for unabridged version: 78%
By The Sesh
Good: An indepth study of African civilization in relation to the rest of the world between 1500 CE and 1800 CE. Also, these UNESCO volumes are written by Africans (Indigenous as well as Arab/White Berber). Useful only to large libraries

Bad: The fact that it is written by Africans means little. Most of these historians were educated in the U.S. or Europe and as a result retain a clear lack of appreciate and understanding about African civilization. It must be remembered that Africa "died" in the 19th Century. The few survivors are still surviving. The majority of the European/American educated such as these authors are not descendents of rebels but of puppets for the European aristocracy. Unfortunately their African heritage has mislead others to believe that it has any value in regard to their insight into African concepts.
