Notes on Love in a Tamil Family, by Margaret Trawick

Love, as a force in human affairs, is still not given much attention or credency by social scientists. With Notes on Love in a Tamil Family, Margaret Trawick places the notion of love prominently in social scientific discourse. Her unforgettable and profusely illustrated study is a significant contribution to anthropology and to South Asian studies.

Trawick lived for a time in the midst of one large South Indian family and sought to understand the multiple and mutually shared expressions of anpu--what in English we call love. Often enveloping the author herself, changing her as she inevitably changed her hosts, this family performed before the young anthropologist's eyes the meaning of anpu: through poetry and conversation, through the not always gentle raising of children, through the weaving of kinship tapestries, through erotic exchanges among women, among men, and across the great sexual boundary. She communicates with grace and insight what she learned from this Tamil family, and we discover that love is no less universal than selfishness and individualism.

stimulating and memorable
By Jennifer Polan
I read this book for the first time over 3 years ago, and have come again for a second read. The book had enlightened me for my trip to Tamil Nadu and how to relate to people in Tamil Nadu. What I liked most about the book was Margaret's open and accepting attitude that I felt throughout the book in her experiencing various and very radically different things than we are used to in USA. The moment which stuck out most for me was when she described how an elder was caring for a baby and had in some way touched the baby in a way that in US we would find odd. The way she wrote it I could completely relate to her situation, and having seen such activities in India itself, I remembered Margaret's book. It is written in a very reader-friendly way and as a reader, I was able to visualize her stay and feel her emotions in a way many authors are not able to express, especially in an anthropological account. I highly recommend this book for any anthropology, cultural studies, Indian studies or anyone interested in reading an interesting account of India.

Very interesting book
By S. Subramanian
This is a readable, interesting, thought-provoking and emotionally involving book with much valuable and accurate information about Tamil culture. I was particularly intrigued by the author's ideas about the emotional signicance of various family relationships. However, the members of the particular family that the author studied closely seemed very damaged psychologically. It was painful to read about the sadistic and masochistic games they played with each other, and especially with the children. Their life histories suggest that they were affected by poverty, parental loss and abuse, all of which may be common in Tamil Nadu but are not intrinsic to the culture. The author acknowledges the "eccentricity" of the family, but "pathology" might be a more accurate term. My own experience with a Tamil family has been very different.

The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Volume III: Birth of a New Age, December 1955-December 1956 (Martin Luther King Papers), by Martin

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s ideas—his call for racial equality, his faith in the ultimate triumph of justice, his insistence on the power of nonviolence to bring about a major transformation of American society—are as vital and timely as ever. The wealth of his writings, both published and unpublished, is now preserved in this authoritative, chronologically arranged multi-volume edition. Volume III chronicles the Montgomery bus boycott of 1956 and Dr. King's emergence as a public figure who attracted international attention. Included is the galvanizing speech he gave on the first day of the bus boycott, transcribed from a fragile tape recording and published here in its entirety for the first time. Also included are his remarks to an angry crowd after the bombing of his home and his powerful speech at the 1956 NAACP convention. King's words from this period reveal the evolution of his distinctive blend of Christian and Gandhian ideas and show his appreciation of the broader significance of the Montgomery movement, a protest that revealed the "longing for human dignity that motivates oppressed people all over the world." The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. is a testament to a man whose life and teaching continue to have a profound influence not only on Americans, but on people of all nations.

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project at Stanford University was established by The Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc., in 1984.

From Library Journal
Director and senior editor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Papers Project, Carson (history, Stanford Univ.) presents another successful effort by the project to research and document the Montgomery bus boycott and Martin Luther King Jr.'s elevation to prominent Civil Rights proponent. It contains annotated transcriptions of King's vital sermons, speeches, correspondence, published writings, unpublished manuscripts, and so on. Like the preceding volumes (Vol. 1: Called To Serve, Jan. 1929-June, 1951, 1992; Vol. 2: Rediscovering Precious Values, July 1951-Nov. 1955, 1994), it includes a calendar of documents with an extensive list of important scholarly King-related primary and secondary sources covering 1954-56. Overall, it is a comprehensive, in-depth, and focused documentation. Highly recommended for African American studies collections.?Edward G. McCormack Lib., Univ. of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Lib., Long Beach

From Booklist
In magisterial regularity, volumes of King's complete collected papers, planned to span 14 volumes, emerge one at a time. Only a single year is represented in the current installment, but what a consequential year it was for King and the civil rights movement. The brief but significant chronological range encompasses King's involvement in the Montgomery bus boycott following Rosa Park's arrest for not surrendering her bus seat to a white person. Documents compiled in this volume mark the growth of King's success as a protest leader, his "signal contribution to the Montgomery movement [being] to infuse it with a Christian ethos of nonviolence and explicitly Gandhian precepts of nonviolent action." The format duplicates that of the previous two volumes (which appeared in 1992 and 1994): a lengthy and enlightening biographical introduction preceding gathered correspondence, speeches, and other documents. Not for most browsers, but invaluable for public library research needs. Brad Hooper

Another book on MLK? Yes -- and perhaps the best one yet
By Michael I. Arrington
I reviewed this volume for the Southern Communication Journal and found it to be one of the most comprehensive historical compilations to address the American Civil Rights movement. Kudos to Carson for undertaking such an ambitious project. In an age of sensationalism and revisionist histories, Carson and the rest of the King Papers Project have shown that accurate documentation, rather than speculation, yields priceless insight into King and the Montgomery bus protest, a key event in the American Civil Rights movement.
This volume combines letters (to and from King), speeches, newspaper articles, and other texts to illustrate the King's depth. We see his religious upbringing, as evidenced in the influences of Ghandi and Christianity; his talent as a minister and an administrator, suggested by the National Baptist Convention's invitation to serve them as their president; and his intellectual aptitudes, shown in the strategy he employed in the Montgomery protest. His decision to move toward incremental change (with full equality as a long-term end) is a major reason why the Montgomery movement succeeded. Had he opted for an all-or-nothing, now-or-never approach, he would have encountered greater resistance, and the movement might have ended while achieving little or no progress. Instead, he lobbied for minor changes in an effort to gain momentum for the larger movement -- an approach dismissed by more radical members of the African-American community. For its insights into King the preacher, King the scholar, King the strategic activist, this text is a valuable addition to the legacy of arguably the most influential American of the last century -- and likely the most influential one never to serve as U.S. President.

The Culture of Pain, by David B. Morris

This is a book about the meanings we make out of pain. The greatest surprise I encountered in discussing this topic over the past ten years was the consistency with which I was asked a single unvarying question: Are you writing about physical pain or mental pain? The overwhelming consistency of this response convinces me that modern culture rests upon and underlying belief so strong that it grips us with the force of a founding myth. Call it the Myth of Two Pains. We live in an era when many people believe--as a basic, unexamined foundation of thought--that pain comes divided into separate types: physical and mental. These two types of pain, so the myth goes, are as different as land and sea. You feel physical pain if your arm breaks, and you feel mental pain if your heart breaks. Between these two different events we seem to imagine a gulf so wide and deep that it might as well be filled by a sea that is impossible to navigate.

From Kirkus Reviews
Drawing on history, art, literature, psychology, and medicine, Morris (Alexander Pope: The Genius of Sense, 1984) offers an extended commentary, profusely documented and illustrated, on the nature, function, and various meanings of pain in Western culture. Considering pain as both a ``biological fact'' and ``an experience in search of an interpretation,'' Morris interprets the psychic, spiritual, and physical experiences of pain and the symbolic, metaphoric, and symptomatic expressions of it from Plato to Joyce Carol Oates, Freud to Norman Cousins, Job to de Sade. The invention of ether in 1846 altered the meaning of pain but did not eradicate it, and to medical science most pain remains a mystery: chronic pain, hysteria, numbness (which is more dangerous than pain), redemptive or religious pain, visionary or revolutionary pain, edifying pain, tragic pain (``we no longer recognize'' it), and comic pain (the best discussion in the book, though its relation to pain is tenuous). Morris surveys the creative uses of pain by artists, the instructive uses of pain by satirists, the erotic uses of pain by sadomasochists, the political uses of pain as torture, and the aesthetic uses of pain in the sentimental, melancholy, and sublime styles of Romantic writers who associated beauty with loss, suffering, and death. He concludes with a lyrical celebration of ``The Future of Pain'': ``We must begin to proliferate its meanings.'' Such a statement reflects the major problems of the book: the exhortative tone, the use of the implicative ``we'' in place of sound argument, and the very proliferation of meanings so that pain becomes an abstraction, resembling pleasure, detached from the causes--anguish, deprivation, discomfort--however spiritual or mental in origin, that healthy people instinctively avoid and that most philosophers, long before Bentham, believed to be a threat to organized society and civilization. Without ideology, it is still an interesting but poorly organized book and no substitute for Elaine Scarry's The Body in Pain (1986). From the Inside Flap
"This illuminating work boldly ranges beyond conventional boundaries to provide a deeper understanding of our common afflictions, our humanity, and our ennobling struggle for transcendence."--1992 PEN/Spielvogel-Diamonstein Award, Judges Martha Nussbaum, Joyce Carol Oates, Ronald Steel "Eloquent and fascinating . . . Morris does not dispel the mystery of pain. Instead he explores its full scope. HIs message for doctors is that they should stop denying the mystery, stop insisting that pain is a mere biological puzzle. . . . His message for patients in pain is that the mind has many roles to play."--Melvin Konner, New York Times Book Review "Not only a rich tapestry of understanding, but also an elegantly written work, which is, perhaps paradoxically, a pleasure to read. . . . Any physician who treats people in pain ought to read this book, and I doubt that any will be able to approach pain in the same way afterward."--Howard Brody, M.D., Journal of the American Medical Association

About the Author
David B. Morris resigned in 1982 from the University of Iowa, where he was professor of English, to move to Michigan and devote himself to writing. An earlier book, Alexander Pope: The Genius of Sense (1984), won the Gottshalk Price of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.

A splendidly rich set of reflections on living with pai
By A Customer
This is an extraordinary book, serious and varied and passionate; I recommend it to anyone who has encountered pain, and would be happy if all doctors had to read it in medical school. It argues that modern society no longer has any effective ways of coping with suffering - especially chronic pain -, of finding meaning in it, and explores some of the ways people in the past learned to live with - and learn from - pain, pain understood not as an enemy attack on human lives which ought to be pain-free, but as a part of life which must be lived with and which can be meaningful in itself, not just a deprivation of meaning.

pain
By Kevin Collins
how does one rate a book about pain?

it was painful to read! it's even painful to write this review.. i've been putting it off for weeks. pain can be fluid and contagious like this

the book is very thorough, and covers pain from a large variety of viewpoints: historical, medical, biological, literary, social, sexual, aesthetic, etc

i found it fascinating - full of interesting information, stories and cultural references. the connection between humor and pain was especially interesting (and enlightening), and i will not forget the description of pre-anesthetic surgery as long as i live

it is heavy on literary references. david morris is clearly excited by literature, but some are extraneous or repetitive. it's a minor criticism

having spelunked into the abyss and back - it was a powerful reading experience, but not one i'm in a hurry to repeat

i would bet the author experienced sheer agony researching and writing this book :)

The Principia : Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, by Isaac Newton

In his monumental 1687 work Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, known familiarly as the Principia, Isaac Newton laid out in mathematical terms the principles of time, force, and motion that have guided the development of modern physical science. Even after more than three centuries and the revolutions of Einsteinian relativity and quantum mechanics, Newtonian physics continues to account for many of the phenomena of the observed world, and Newtonian celestial dynamics is used to determine the orbits of our space vehicles.

This completely new translation, the first in 270 years, is based on the third (1726) edition, the final revised version approved by Newton; it includes extracts from the earlier editions, corrects errors found in earlier versions, and replaces archaic English with contemporary prose and up-to-date mathematical forms.

Newton's principles describe acceleration, deceleration, and inertial movement; fluid dynamics; and the motions of the earth, moon, planets, and comets. A great work in itself, the Principia also revolutionized the methods of scientific investigation. It set forth the fundamental three laws of motion and the law of universal gravity, the physical principles that account for the Copernican system of the world as emended by Kepler, thus effectively ending controversy concerning the Copernican planetary system.

The illuminating Guide to the Principia by I. Bernard Cohen, along with his and Anne Whitman's translation, will make this preeminent work truly accessible for today's scientists, scholars, and students.

BEWARE: The Snowball Publishing Edition is NOT the Cohen Edition!
By Kevin T. Keith
The explanatory material, publishers's notes, and most of the reviews above all refer to the Bernard Cohen translation and commentary (UC Berkeley Press, blue cover) - but they are attached to the Amazon listing for the Snowball Publishing edition (brownish cover), which is not the same thing at all!!

The entry for the Snowball edition - listed on Amazon discount for about $13 - clearly states that it is the Cohen translation with his commentaries. In fact, it is merely a cheap reproduction of some earlier edition of the standard Motte translation, with modernized spelling. It is the complete text of the (translated) Third Edition of the Principia, but with no other associated works by Newton and nothing by Cohen. Snowball does not even give the translator's name, either on the cover or in the front matter! The lithographic reproduction is readable but poor quality - with many broken characters and even edges of pages slightly cut off. This is a usable cheap edition of the well-known 1729 translation, but it is NOT the modern translation, as the Amazon listing explicitly states. (In fact, Amazon's "Search Inside This Book" feature, from the Snowball edition page, takes you to the search pages for the Cohen edition - a completely different, and much more expensive, book!)

I'm sure this was a good-faith error on Amazon's part, but it is completely misleading. Buyers should know what they are getting. If you are reading this on the page listing for the Snowball Publishing edition of the Principia, you aren't getting what they say you are. Be forewarned.

A time of Science and Philosophy together
By Kenneth Ellman
From Kenneth Ellman, Newton, New Jersey 07860, ke@kennethellman.com
"I hope that, decades from now, when I and my other books have been forgotten, this will still be useful to scholars and students". So spoke Harvard University Professor I. Bernard Cohen some years before his death in 2003. His co-translator Anne Whitman had died in 1984. The translation and the extraordinary commentary is 974 pages long and took 15 years to complete. I have had this edition for many years and in reading it again I decided to write this review. I feel grateful to Cohen and Whitman for what they accomplished.

This particular edition by Cohen and Whitman of The Principia stands alone (as far as I know) in making one feel that a teacher, guide, and historian are holding your hand while exploring and understanding one of the most dramatic and powerful scientific and mathematical treatise ever written. I am surprised at some of the reviews here in that they seem to discuss the applicability or utilization of The Principia as a Physics or Math textbook. This is certainly not a textbook in the modern sense in any respect. This is not a book you would use to prepare for any normal Physics or Math examination. It must be kept in mind that this book by Newton was a human accomplishment and this particular edition with its extensive commentary by Cohen lets one be exposed to both the scientific rigor and social aspects of the world of Isaac Newton. And due to the fact of Newton's extraordinary scientific and mathematical accomplishment it caused historical alteration in the course of human events as does each great expansion of human knowledge. Sometimes when mathematical expressions and concepts of Physics are portrayed we forget that the ideas are first and foremost a human experience, it is not some distant and inscrutable theory but part of our most intimate life. We try to understand what we are and where we are. In the days of Isaac Newton Natural Philosophy was thought of as an expression and search for the truth and mathematics was sometimes able to be the handmaiden of this exploration. Unfortunately, from my point of view, philosophy has become detached from much of mathematics and this has done a disservice to both Physics, Math and what is currently thought of as Philosophy. I see no advantage in this current day separation and when immersing yourself in this edition of The Principia, there is a longing for those days now past when there was a unification of science and philosophy.
There is little reason in this review to explain the significance both mathematically and historically of the writing of Isaac Newton. Whether a student is using a conventional Physics textbook to master the understanding, laws and calculations described in The Principia or is exercising physics problems to show facility and prepare for an examination, each and every aspiring learner is obligated to master the ideas and knowledge as expressed in The Principia one way or another. Certainly our current day Physics textbooks do not teach as Isaac Newton taught and wrote. The Principia is not a book normally used to prepare for any Physics examination whether in High School or University. But the law of science and math as expressed in The Principia is as valid in general application today as it was in 1729. Our understanding of the laws of Newton as they relate to later discovered equations and expressions, including Relativity, does alters our knowledge of applicability of Newtonian physics. It does show the limitations of our belief in the immutable Laws of Nature, including those mathematical laws. In some respects radically so. So, it really depends upon the demands you put upon the math and knowledge as expressed in The Principia. Do not read Isaac Newton in the light of Albert Einstein and others. First read Newton in the light of his age, then step back and remember how we have continued along this amazing path to knowledge. So The Principia is another place in our human endeavor. This is not just a book for mathematicians. As related on pages 297 and 298 that wonderful contemporary of Newton, John Locke, without benefit of full mathematical understanding was still able to comprehend the ideas within. So will you. This is by far the best edition of The Principia I have ever read. Kenneth Ellman, Box 18, Newton, New Jersey 07860 , ke@kennethellman.com

A superb book! It reads like a novel!
By Zoraida
This is a splendid book! Although I had looked en passant at the English edition (1990), I have just finished reading its Spanish translation, published in 1993, which I found mesmerizing. Even if you are not interested per se in the workings of the Inquision in Valencia (Spain), in early modern times, Prof. Haliczer's study provides an excellent overview of the institutional organization and functions of the Spanish Inquisition since its beginnings in fifteenth-century Castile and Andalucia. This work focuses on the general judicial procedures and financial structures of the Inquisition, on the life of Inquisitors and paid functionaries, including suggestive profiles of powerful Inquisitors, on the "famliars" and functionaries without a salary and, more importantly, on the strained relations beween the Tribunal of the Inquisition in Valencia and the local assembly (Consell General). The book sheds light on the conflicts of the Inquisition with important members of the local elites in this city, a facet I found especially fascinating. The chapters on the conversos, the Moriscos, and other deviants, such as Protestants and homosexuals, are superb. Although I was specifically looking for information on various Inquisitors in early modern Valencia, this book has also clarified many obscure points of the Spanish Inquisition. The bibliography is also commendable. My only criticism: the book in Spanish does not have a much needed index, whch would be very helpful for interested readers. The English version does have an index. As a scholar in early modern Spanish Studies, I recommend this book highly.

Echo and Narcissus: Women's Voices in Classical Hollywood Cinema, by Amy Lawrence

Do women in classical Hollywood cinema ever truly speak for themselves? In Echo and Narcissus, Amy Lawrence examines eight classic films to show how women's speech is repeatedly constructed as a "problem," an affront to male authority. This book expands feminist studies of the representation of women in film, enabling us to see individual films in new ways, and to ask new questions of other films.

Using Sadie Thompson (1928), Blackmail (1929), Rain (1932), The Spiral Staircase, Sorry,Wrong Number, Notorious, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Lawrence illustrates how women's voices are positioned within narratives that require their submission to patriarchal roles and how their attempts to speak provoke increasingly severe repression. She also shows how women's natural ability to speak is interrupted, made difficult, or conditioned to a suffocating degree by sound technology itself. Telephones, phonographs, voice-overs, and dubbing are foregrounded, called upon to silence women and to restore the primacy of the image.

Unlike the usage of "voice" by feminist and literary critics to discuss broad issues of authorship and point of view, in film studies the physical voice itself is a primary focus. Echo and Narcissus shows how assumptions about the "deficiencies" of women's voices and speech are embedded in sound's history, technology, uses, and marketing. Moreover, the construction of the woman's voice is inserted into the ideologically loaded cinematic and narrative conventions governing the representation of women in Hollywood film.

The Protocol of the Gods: A Study of the Kasuga Cult in Japanese History, by Allan G. Grapard

The Protocol of the Gods is a pioneering study of the history of relations between Japanese native institutions (Shinto shrines) and imported Buddhist institutions (Buddhist temples). Using the Kasuga Shinto shrine and the Kofukuji Buddhist temple, one of the oldest and largest of the shrine-temple complexes, Allan Grapard characterizes what he calls the combinatory character of pre-modern Japanese religiosity. He argues that Shintoism and Buddhism should not be studied in isolation, as hitherto supposed. Rather, a study of the individual and shared characteristics of their respective origins, evolutions, structures, and practices can serve as a model for understanding the pre-modern Japanese religious experience.

Spanning the years from a period before historical records to the forcible separation of the Kasuga-Kofukuji complex by the Meiji government in 1868, Grapard presents a wealth of little-known material. He includes translations of rare texts and provides new, accessible translations of familiar documents.

Review

'A remarkable account' Fredric Jameson

'this book is astonishingly refreshing...Sinfield has done many things here, but one outstanding achievement of his new work is to help any student looking into contextual literary study that 'background' is often a bundle of multiple sources of textual meanings. Any superficial look into it is dangerous.' - The Lecturer

Devi: Goddesses of India (Comparative Studies in Religion and Society), by John Stratton Hawley, Donna Marie Wulff

The monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have severely limited the portrayal of the divine as feminine. But in Hinduism "God" very often means "Goddess." This extraordinary collection explores twelve different Hindu goddesses, all of whom are in some way related to Devi, the Great Goddess. They range from the liquid goddess-energy of the River Ganges to the possessing, entrancing heat of Bhagavati and Seranvali. They are local, like Vindhyavasini, and global, like Kali; ancient, like Saranyu, and modern, like "Mother India." The collection combines analysis of texts with intensive fieldwork, allowing the reader to see how goddesses are worshiped in everyday life. In these compelling essays, the divine feminine in Hinduism is revealed as never before—fascinating, contradictory, powerful.

From Library Journal
Editors Hawley (religion, Barnard Coll.) and Wulff (religion, Brown Univ.) offer a collection of scholarly essays exploring the portrayals of 12 Hindu goddesses from a number of regions and time periods. Well written and thoroughly researched, the essays explore the multivarious roles of the goddess in a religion where the presence of the female divine is vital, real, and contradictory. The editors have divided the essays into sections discussing the goddess as supreme and goddess as consort; goddesses who mother and possess; and, finally, Kali in the Western goddess spirituality movement. Great book on the Goddesses of India!
By Amazon Customer
I have this version under the title Devi: Goddesses of India published in India. I am pleased with this book. Many books show Kali as a ruthless killer and destroyer, here you will read about a softer and yet liberating side of Kali for women and men. This book has many articles from diffrent authers which really gives the reader a look at diffrent devis from diffrent points of view. Once I began to read this book I could not put it down. I would also recommend anything by David Kinsley and Kali by Elizabet U Harding .

great read
By Rani
I'm in the process of reading this book- and am enjoying it. It is informing and looks at the Goddesses from different angles-which i really appreciate. I have learned quite a bit about Goddesses that I had never known before- and it has answered questions that even my parents and grandparents were unable to answer (all Hindu)

Only one God, but many forms.
By Adria Chappell
"The monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have severely limited the portrayal of the divine as feminine." Please don't think because of the former comment that Hindus beleive in more than one God. The Gita says "God may take any form he/she pleases and at any time he/she pleases." These deities are manifestations ( dictionary definition of manifestation-- One of the forms in which someone or something, such as a person, a divine being, or an idea, is revealed. The materialized form of a spirit.)
