Cross-Cultural Filmmaking: A Handbook for Making Documentary and Ethnographic Films and Videos, by Ilisa Barbash, Lucien Taylor

This extraordinary handbook was inspired by the distinctive concerns of anthropologists and others who film people in the field. The authors cover the practical, technical, and theoretical aspects of filming, from fundraising to exhibition, in lucid and complete detail—information never before assembled in one place. The first section discusses filmmaking styles and the assumptions that frequently hide unacknowledged behind them, as well as the practical and ethical issues involved in moving from fieldwork to filmmaking. The second section concisely and clearly explains the technical aspects, including how to select and use equipment, how to shoot film and video, and the reasons for choosing one or the other, and how to record sound. Finally, the third section outlines the entire process of filmmaking: preproduction, production, postproduction, and distribution. Filled with useful illustrations and covering documentary and ethnographic filmmaking of all kinds, Cross-Cultural Filmmaking will be as essential to the anthropologist or independent documentarian on location as to the student in the classroom.

Good Resource for Documentarians
By Arun K. Das
Although this book is geared toward professional, experienced filmmakers, film students or aspiring documentarians will learn from this text, as well. The book has thoughtful details, descriptive paragraphs, and helpful advice on how to create effective "ethnographic films." But despite this focus, the book's guidelines can be applied to any kind of documentary project. It's also simply a good read.

Nuns as Artists: The Visual Culture of a Medieval Convent, by Jeffrey F. Hamburger

Jeffrey F. Hamburger's groundbreaking study of the art of female monasticism explores the place of images and image-making in the spirituality of medieval nuns during the later Middle Ages. Working from a previously unknown group of late-fifteenth-century devotional drawings made by a Benedictine nun for her cloistered companions, Hamburger discusses the distinctive visual culture of female communities. The drawings discovered by Hamburger and the genre to which they belong have never been given serious consideration by art historians, yet they serve as icons of the nuns' religious vocation in all its complexity.

Setting the drawings and related imagery—manuscript illumination, prints, textiles, and metalwork—within the context of religious life and reform in late medieval Germany, Hamburger reconstructs the artistic, literary, and institutional traditions that shaped the lives of cloistered women.

Hamburger convincingly demonstrates the overwhelming importance of "seeing" in devotional practice, challenging traditional assumptions about the primacy of text over image in monastic piety. His presentation of the "visual culture of the convent" makes a fundamental contribution to the history of medieval art and, more generally, of late medieval monasticism and spirituality.

Amazon.com Review
This groundbreaking book explores, in unprecedented detail, the distinctive visual culture of female communities, a genre never before given serious attention by art historians. The group of works discussed, a previously undiscovered group of devotional drawings by a Benedictine nun in the later Middle Ages, also includes illuminated manuscripts, prints, textiles, and metalwork. This book carefully reconstructs the artistic traditions that were fundamental to the lives of cloistered women. Nuns that were separated from the high altar, for instance, could participate in the mass through their art, which served as an expression of visual longing. The drawings provided the nuns with a substitute for sacramental presence and thus represented the fulfillment of spiritual desires. This fascinating, if scholarly, work is a gladly received contribution to the study of medieval art.

Review
"Hamburger has conquered a new province of medieval art. Thanks to his efforts "nuns as artists will be no longer overlooked."--"New York Review of Books

From the Inside Flap
"Hamburger's singular discovery of a group of devotional drawings made by an anonymous nun . . . is here presented with magisterial learning, theoretical sophistication, and deep human sympathy."—V. A. Kolve, University of California, Los Angeles

a masterful work
By LuelCanyon
An exquisite book in every way. Hamburger's arguments are spun with cosmic refinement, letting the whole mediaeval spirit reign human and beautiful, and focusing on its treasures - the mediaeval convent and the women religious whose work as artisans of devotion remains to this day an urgent interest. The story is unheard of, and soaked with succinct scholarship. The writing's uncommonly beautiful, full of intellectual fervor, but as mild as the Jesu of the women whose remarkable images still astonish after hundreds of years. The red Christ is a pure doctrinal exegisis for every age, and a real find. Hamburger draws the right relationship between the nuns' art, their lives of profession, and essential information about the religious' interior relationship to the wider Church throughout the high Middle Ages. His fondness for and ready assent to the vitality of the art of the nuns of St Walburg only shows his scholarship more clearly. Nothing gets in the way, and the illustrations from beginning to end are unforgettable. A large section of full color plates (including the red Christ) in the center of the book, and the vital b/w illustrations are closeup, and a critical part of a captivating story. We're told as much about our own age by this masterful book as we are the world of gifted cloistered women, and the implications of that are far-reaching.

Disappointing to me
By Mark Thrice
Sadly, there is NOT a large section of color images, just a few pages. Without color these pictures do not convey much. Perhaps I feel this way because I am a visual artist, but I need to see the color to understand these images. There is no place online that I can find that offers these images in color.

Do not buy this book thinking that its pictures are worth much. Perhaps the words will have enough value for others to make it worth its high price, but for me it was a sad disappointment.

From Library Journal
The Owens Valley communities of eastern California and their battles with the city of Los Angeles concerning water rights is a classic example of territorial conflicts. Walton presents a historical and sociological study of this largely unsuccessful battle in a community in which violence, rebellion, political activity, and state domination have been a fact of life since 1920. Walton guides the reader through conquest of Native Americans in the Owens Valley, the building of a pioneer economy, conflicts among ethnic groups and social classes, and the struggle to regain their lost dignity through collective action. His analysis shows how the expansion of a state's administrative and coercive power can undermine the autonomy of a local community by placing it in the hands of politicians, bureaucracies, and those with privileged access to state agencies. This book should be required reading for small communities involved in turf wars with nearby urban areas.

Review
"One of the most provocative and rewarding recent works about social movements and collective action in the United States. . . . A fascinating story of the American West; "Western Times and Water Wars deserves high praise."--David Plotke, "Contemporary Sociology

From the Inside Flap
"Walton first uses his magnifying glass to capture images of struggle in a California valley during a century and a half of transformation, then inverts it to scrutinize the American state, popular politics, and collective action in general. The maneuver is bold, the outcome stimulating."—Charles Tilly, New School for Social Research

"A passionate and first rate historical adventure. The plot is as intricate, fascinating, and full of intrigue and detail as a Dickens or a Tolstoy novel."—John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War

A little too academic for me.
By Roger
The author is an historian and proud of it. I was reading this to get a better feel for the history of the "Rape of the Owens Valley" by the L.A. water wizards. I got the history I was looking for, but it was packaged in a form that made it harder to digest. The author was much too concerned with showing off his vocabulary and "dissing" other historians' views. He cleary had his own academic agenda and it got in the way of communicating. Still, the book gave me what I was looking for and it was worth the read.

Great history of the water grab for Los Angeles

Los Angeles - Owens Valley water wars told with accuracy. Very readable and informative. A story of David and Goliath where David fights valiantly, but the Los Angeles Goliath wins.

Residues of Justice: Literature, Law, Philosophy, by Wai Chee Dimock

In this arresting book, Wai Chee Dimock takes on the philosophical tradition from Kant to Rawls, challenging its conception of justice as foundational, self-evident, and all-encompassing. The idea of justice is based on the premise that the world can be resolved into commensurate terms: punishment equal to the crime, redress equal to the injury, benefit equal to the desert. Dimock focuses, however, on what remains unexhausted, unrecovered, and noncorresponding in the exercise of justice. To honor these "residues," she turns to literature, which, in its linguistic density, transposes the clean abstractions of law and philosophy into persistent shadows, the abiding presence of the incommensurate. Justice can only be a partial answer to the phenomenon of human conflict.

In arguing for justice as an incomplete virtue, Dimock draws upon legal history, political philosophy, linguistics, theology, and feminist theory; she discusses Aristotle and Augustine, Locke and Luther, Marx and Durkheim, Michael Sandel and Carol Gilligan, Noam Chomsky and Mary Ann Glendon. She also examines an unusual configuration of nineteenth-century American authors, pairing figures such as Herman Melville and Rebecca Harding Davis, Walt Whitman and Susan Warner.

The result is a book both passionate and scholarly. It invites us to rethink the meanings of literature, law, and philosophy, and to imagine a language of community more supple and more nuanced than the language of justice.

"This is a masterpiece overflowing with insight, argument, scholarship, and passion. This book will be much discussed, reviewed, and I would predict quickly acknowledged as a 'standard-setter' for interdisciplinary 'law and humanities' studies."—Robin L. West, Georgetown University Law Center

"Wai Chee Dimock's brilliant book brings literature, law, and moral philosophy into kaleidoscopic interaction in order to examine concepts fundamental to all three. Stunningly clear in style yet full of unexpected turns of thought, this book will make readers think hard about the idea of justice—and it will urge them to reread the texts and traditions Dimock moves among so commandingly,"—Richard H. Brodhead, English, Yale University

"Dimock's scholarship has long impressed me. Her new book only deepens my appreciation of the breadth of her scholarship, the probing and insightful nature of her analysis. Residues of Justice exemplifies the best in the new cultural studies. It fuses political philosophy and critical legal theory, literature and history without confusing distinctions between these fields—or the reader. It brilliantly grounds traditional western understandings of the nature of justice in a detailed understanding of the history and culture in which those understandings took form and then problematizes all by counterposing legal theory to literary texts. Her counterposing of Beccaria and James Fenimore Cooper, Marx and Melville, Chomsky and Whitman is dazzling. All interested in the new cultural studies, in critical legal theory, in the history of American culture will find Residues of Justice pathbreaking and invaluable."—Carroll Smith-Rosenberg, Department of History, University of Pennsylvania

Domestic Individualism: Imagining Self in Nineteenth-Century America (The New Historicism: Studies in Cultural Poetics), by Gillian Brown

Gillian Brown's book probes the key relationship between domestic ideology and formulations of the self in nineteenth-century America. Arguing that domesticity institutes gender, class, and racial distinctions that govern masculine as well as feminine identity, Brown brilliantly alters, for literary critics, feminists, and cultural historians, the critical perspective from which nineteenth-century American literature and culture have been viewed.

In this study of the domestic constitution of individualism, Brown traces how the values of interiority, order, privacy, and enclosure associated with the American home come to define selfhood in general. By analyzing writings by Stowe, Hawthorne, Melville, Fern, and Gilman, and by examining other contemporary cultural modes—abolitionism, consumerism, architecture, interior decorating, motherhood, mesmerism, hysteria, and agoraphobia—she reconfigures the parameters of both domesticity and the patterns of self it fashions. Unfolding a representational history of the domestic, Brown's work offers striking new readings of the literary texts as well as of the cultural contexts that they embody.

J.M. Coetzee: South Africa and the Politics of Writing (Perspectives on Southern Africa), by David Attwell

David Attwell defends the literary and political integrity of South African novelist J.M. Coetzee by arguing that Coetzee has absorbed the textual turn of postmodern culture while still addressing the ethical tensions of the South African crisis. As a form of "situational metafiction," Coetzee's writing reconstructs and critiques some of the key discourses in the history of colonialism and apartheid from the eighteenth century to the present. While self-conscious about fiction-making, it takes seriously the condition of the society in which it is produced.

Attwell begins by describing the intellectual and political contexts surrounding Coetzee's fiction and then provides a developmental analysis of his six novels, drawing on Coetzee's other writings in stylistics, literary criticism, translation, political journalism and popular culture. Elegantly written, Attwell's analysis deals with both Coetzee's subversion of the dominant culture around him and his ability to see the complexities of giving voice to the anguish of South Africa.

Information and Organizations (California Series on Social Choice and Political Economy), by Arthur L. Stinchcombe

An ambitious new work by a well-respected sociologist, Information and Organizations provides a bold perspective of the dynamics of organizations. Stinchcombe contends that the "information problem" and the concept of "uncertainty" provide the key to understanding how organizations function. In a delightful mix of large theoretical insights and vivid anecdotal material, Stinchcombe explores the ins and outs of organizations from both a macro and micro perspective. He reinterprets the work of the renowned scholars of business, Alfred Chandler, James March and Oliver Williamson, and looks in depth at corporations like DuPont and General Motors. Along the way, Stinchcombe explores subjects as varied as class consciousness, innovation, contracts and university administration. All of these analyses are distinguished by incisive thinking and creative new approaches to issues that have long confronted business people and those interested in organizational theory.

A tour de force, Information and Organizations is a must-read for business people and scholars of many stripes. It promises to be a widely discussed and debated work.

Tribes and State Formation in the Middle EastFrom University of California Press

Tribes and State Formation is the first effort to bring together the disciplines of history, anthropology, and political science around a major topic that none of these alone is adequately equipped to address. How and why did certain tribal societies metamorphose over time into states? Scholars concerned with general questions of theory and methodology and the interaction of anthropology and history, as well as political scientists and sociologists concerned with concepts of the state in the Middle East and other developing regions, will be well served by this innovative work.

The articles by an array of distinguished scholars cover a wide range of topics: the relationship of ideology to tribal and state power, comparisons between different regional patterns of tribe-state interaction, historical case studies from North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and Iran extending to the contemporary period; theoretical and methodological inquiries, and systematic reviews of the literature on tribes and states. The articles argue against a unilinear approach to the study of tribes and state formation by emphasizing that states often existed alongside tribes and even created tribes for their own purposes. Some case studies emphasize the incompatibility of states and tribalism, while others illustrate the many areas in which tribes actually enhanced rather than impeded state formation.

Booking Passage: Exile and Homecoming in the Modern Jewish Imagination, by Sidra DeKoven Ezrahi

Sidra DeKoven Ezrahi's sweeping study of modern Jewish writing is in many ways a long meditation on the thematics of geography in Jewish culture, what she calls the "poetics of exile and return."

Until the late nineteenth century, Jews were identified in their own religious and poetic imagination as wanderers and exiles, their sacred center–Jerusalem, Zion–fatefully out of reach. Opening the book with "Jewish Journeys," Ezrahi begins by examining the work of medieval Hebrew poet Yehuda Halevi to chart a journey whose end was envisioned as the sublime realignment of the people with their original center. When the Holy Land became the site of a political drama of return in the nineteenth century, Jewish writing reflected the shift, traced here in the travel fictions of S.Y. Abramovitsh, S.Y. Agnon, and Sholem Aleichem.

In "Jewish Geographies" Ezrahi explores aspects of reterritorialization through memory in the post-Holocaust writing of Paul Celan, Dan Pagis, Aharon Appelfeld, I.B. Singer and Philip Roth. Europe, where Jews had dreamed of return, has become the new ruined shrine: The literary pilgrimages of these writers recall familiar patterns of grieving and representation and a tentative reinvention of the diasporic imagination–in America, of course, but, paradoxically, even in Zion.

Wandering Jews
By omer-shermanr@spmail.slu.edu
In recent years, a seemingly endless variety of poetic and political signifiers have been invoked in attempts to describe the experiences of dispossession, minorities, and regions: border, creolization, transculturation, transnationalism, hybridity. These spatial/historical paradigms are often at the crux of cultural debates in much the way that W. E. B. Du Bois's concept of double consciousness would have once occupied center stage. At the top of the list ranks diaspora (and frequently the somewhat elusive diasporic) which is the focus of journals such as Diaspora and Transition as well as a wide range of academic periodicals that have devoted special issues to the theme. But in one way or another, these permutations and mutations of diaspora can be traced to a late nineteenth-century movement among Jewish historiographers, who sought ways to account for the Jews' persistence over the long span of centuries in a variety of lands that were not their homeland. Unfortunately, the rapidly increasing ways that "diaspora" has been appropriated, has led to an unfortunate increase in intellectual fuzziness and rhetorical imprecision to which even the rigorous field of Jewish Studies is far from immune. Fortunately for the latter, Sidra Dekoven Ezrahi's ambitious new study offers both theoretical rigor and innovation, taking the critique of literary Homecoming to a more sophisticated discursive space that will raise essential questions for future investigations of many of the poets and writers considered here. Although Jewish diasporism has often been a focus of Jewish literary analysis, nothing like this book has ever been attempted. Offering a wealth of original translations of abundant prooftexts, rich biographical and literary detail, Ezrahi has produced a consistently lively and erudite work. Divided into two major sections, "Jewish Journeys" and "Jewish Geographies" this book examines the tension between "Jewish story and territory" (139). Ezrahi's touchstone, Yehuda Halevi's "Songs of Zion" provides the essential metaphors of displacement, desire, voyage, and Return that guide her provocative readings. For Ezrahi, the essential terms that haunt the Jewish literary imagination to our own age were embedded in the Kabbalistic texts of Halevi's medieval contemporaries where the theosophical orientation shifts "from a geographical locus to the mobile body of the Jew, leading to later Kabbalistic and eventually Hassidic notions of individual salvation and symbolic rather than concrete connections with a sacred center" (49). In her shrewd analysis of the "diasporic journey" encoded here, Ezrahi is keenly attentive to the creative polarizations that continually reverberate between the metaphorizing and concretizing forms of narrative. For Ezrahi, the diasporic Jew imaginatively transforms the theological dynamic of deferral into profoundly skeptical visions of incomplete pilgrimages and mimetic culture. Ezrahi sees in the Jewish writer's faithful occupation of mimetic, rather than original space, a profound struggle against "contemporary complacencies" as well as "utopian desires" (53) that pose the true dangers to the Jewish spirit: "Herzl's 'if you will it, it is not a dream,' the emblem of the Zionist emergence from the 'dream-state' of the aggadically minded, reflects a cultural challenge of the highest order... 'will,' the fuel that empowers the imagination, is meant eventually to supersede it" (91). In contrast, Ezrahi makes a compelling case for a surprising continuum in the Jewish narrative journey and her study constitutes an ingathering of a highly disparate group of writers whose works (modernist and postmodern alike) nonetheless share a certain primordial trajectory: the literary "decoding of Jewish fate" invariably culminates in a "basic, primordial exilic pattern" in which "the topos of the journey to the Holy Land [is] a tale of the endlessly deferred end" (194). Ezrahi's readings of the spiritual and intellectual struggles encoded in Pagis and Celan's post-Shoah responses to the disenchanted universe are particularly stirring. For instance, in the latter's doomed search for a redemptive encounter with "an Other who has not come" Ezrahi notices the exile's mimicry of the "Zionist intoxication with a return to the primordial self" but finds that such recovery invariably reverts to "the legendary geography of the aimless and endlessly proliferating Jewish journey" (151). Also of note is Ezrahi's analysis of the Israeli poet and medieval scholar Dan Pagis's late works. In the latter's deeply wounded poetics of fragments she discovers "unfathomable depths poised at the borders of language...enigmatic signals sent directly to the reader" (176). Zion remains unattainable destiny rather than the place of arrival. There are also impressive readings of a number of novels by the Israeli novelist Aharon Appelfeld, some of which are still unavailable in English translation. Of particular note is the author's fascinating "Epilogue," an iconoclastic and evocative meditation on the competing claims of nationalism and what the author regards as the truly sacred. No future study of canonical Jewish literature will be sufficient without reference to this luminous study.-Ranen Omer-Sherman, author of Diaspora and Zionism in Jewish-American Literature

Bewitching Women, Pious Men: Gender and Body Politics in Southeast AsiaFrom University of California Press

This impressive array of essays considers the contingent and shifting meanings of gender and the body in contemporary Southeast Asia. By analyzing femininity and masculinity as fluid processes rather than social or biological givens, the authors provide new ways of understanding how gender intersects with local, national, and transnational forms of knowledge and power.

Contributors cut across disciplinary boundaries and draw on fresh fieldwork and textual analysis, including newspaper accounts, radio reports, and feminist writing. Their subjects range widely: the writings of feminist Filipinas; Thai stories of widow ghosts; eye-witness accounts of a beheading; narratives of bewitching genitals, recalcitrant husbands, and market women as femmes fatales. Geographically, the essays cover Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. The essays bring to this region the theoretical insights of gender theory, political economy, and cultural studies.

Gender and other forms of inequality and difference emerge as changing systems of symbols and meanings. Bodies are explored as sites of political, economic, and cultural transformation. The issues raised in these pages make important connections between behavior, bodies, domination, and resistance in this dynamic and vibrant region.

gender studies of Southeast Asia
By Jeffery Mingo
This is a mixture of Southeast Asian studies and gender studies. Though most of the articles are by women, some are by men. Though most articles are by people with European last names, there are some contributors with Asian names. Like many gender studies anthologies, there is more information on femininity than masculinity. However, I blame no one since men's studies is such a recently emerging field.

This book focuses more upon Southeastern Asian island nations than other places. There are no articles on Vietnam or Myanmar in this book. Still, given that Indonesia is approximately the fifth most populated country in the world, the work here is novel. I mean, how often do you hear about Indonesia and Malaysia in American books?

Unfortunately, this book says little about feminism in the region. Further, each chapter begins with a summary that tells you everything you need to know. Really, students could get away with reading the summaries and not having to read the rest of the text.

My main reason for being proud to own this book is because of the cover painting by Arunothai Somsakul. I definitely have to find more of her work; it's pure beauty. I missed whether the editors explain the title. But I find it misleading in two ways. First, it comes off as somewhat sexist that men are labeled "pious" while women are labeled "bewitching." Too, this book is not about religion in Southeast Asia. It focuses on fertility, employment, and family dynamics, not spirituality.

It's funny to me how books become timely. There were no fears about tsunamis when this anthology was collected in 1995. However, this book covers the nations that were worst effected by the recent disaster. Anthropological and other academic studies of the area may have some useful impact on the recovery efforts taking place as I write this review.
