Symbolist Art Theories: A Critical Anthology, by Henri Dorra

Henri Dorra, in his comprehensive new book, presents the development and the aesthetic theories of the symbolist movement in art and literature. Included are writings (many never before translated or reprinted) by artists, designers, architects, and critics, along with Dorra's learned commentary. Fifty photographs of symbolist works complement his encyclopedic coverage.

Dorra traces symbolism and its roots from artist to artist and critic to critic from the 1860s to the early twentieth century. The decorative arts and architecture are examined as well as painting and sculpture. The Arts and Crafts movement, art nouveau, the work of Eiffel in France and Sullivan in the United States are all well represented.

The close relations between symbolist poets and artists are reflected in the chapter on literary developments. Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, and Mallarmé are here, but so, too, are writers less well-known. A section on the Post-Impressionists and the "Artists of the Soul" rounds out Dorra's rich and varied text, and his epilogue lays the groundwork for what was to follow symbolism.

Dorra beautifully integrates the different aesthetic branches of symbolism, the different media and national variations, without ever losing sight of the whole. The historical context provided makes this a particularly appealing collection for students and scholars of art history and literature, as well as for anyone interested in the evolution of symbolism.

Garrett Eckbo: Modern Landscapes for Living, by Marc Treib, Dorothée Imbert

One of the central figures in modern landscape architecture, Garrett Eckbo (1910-2000) was a major influence in the field during an active career spanning five decades. While most of the early American designers concentrated on the private garden and the corporate landscape, Eckbo's work demonstrated innovative design ideas in a social setting. This engagement with social improvement has stayed with Eckbo throughout his life, distinguishing both his intentions and achievements, from his early work for the Farm Security Administration to his partnerships (including one of the most prominent landscape firms in the world, Eckbo, Dean, Austin, and Williams—EDAW) and his years as chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley.

In an elegant and detailed book that includes more than 100 of Eckbo's designs, Marc Treib examines the aesthetic formation of Eckbo's manner, and by implication the broader field of landscape architecture since the 1930s. Dorothée Imbert writes about Eckbo's social vision, including his belief that ultimately, landscape design is the "arrangement of environments for people." The book also contains a biographical and professional chronology and a complete bibliography of publications by and about Garrett Eckbo.

Rare Opportunity
By janjamm
Treib and Imbert offer a rare insight into the man who lead the movement to modern landscape design. Where formerly, landscape design rested on a strict axial orientation, with Eckbo's brilliant influence, this rigidness exploded into designs more like Wassily Kandinsky compositions. No other designer has played a greater part in the development of modern landscape design. Just looking at the intricate, beautifully hand-drawn landscape architectural drawings he made, from small-scale gardens to large-scale parks, is a big treat. The authors integrate Eckbo's writings into the text, as well, to give us a sense of this apparently, humble, yet, brilliant man's thoughts and process. This is a wonderful book for someone interested in the history and dynamics of landscape design, or someone just developing a small garden. This is also a great addition to the library of the mid-century design enthusiast or scholar. For me, beginning to understand the underpinnings of landscape design, as well as the social value of public landscape design through Eckbo's eyes and mind, made a world of difference in my approach to seeing or modifying space of any kind. This is a quiet, illuminating and wonderful book.

Sex and Sensibility: Stories of a Lesbian Generation, by Arlene Stein

In the first book to analyze shifts in lesbian identity, consciousness, and culture from the 1970s to the 1990s, Arlene Stein contributes an important chapter to the study of the women's movement and offers a revealing portrait of the exchange between a radical generation of feminists and its successors. Tracing the evolution of the lesbian movement from the bar scene to the growth of alternative families, Stein illustrates how a generation of women transformed the woman-centered ideals of feminism into a culture and a lifestyle.

Sex and Sensibility relates the development of a "queer" sensibility in the 1990s to the foundation laid by the gay rights and feminist movements a generation earlier. Beginning with the stories of thirty women who came of age at the climax of the 70s women's movement—many of whom defined lesbianism as a form of resistance to dominant gender and sexual norms—Stein explores the complex issues of identity that these women confronted as they discovered who they were and defined themselves in relation to their communities and to society at large.

Sex and Sensibility ends with interviews of ten younger women, members of the post-feminist generation who have made it a fashion to dismiss lesbian feminism as overly idealistic and reductive. Enmeshed in Stein's compelling and personal narrative are coming-out experiences, questions of separatism, work, desire, children, and family. Stein considers the multiple identities of women of color and the experiences of intermittent and "ex" lesbians.

Was the lesbian feminist experiment a success? What has become of these ideas and the women who held them? In answering these questions, Stein illustrates the lasting and profound effect that the lesbian feminist movement had, and continues to have, on contemporary women's definitions of sexual identity.

Amazon.com Review
Arlene Stein interviewed 41 lesbian-identified women for this study of the origins of 1970s lesbian feminism and its legacy in queer culture today. Sex and Sensibility looks at the fluidity or the fixedness of sexual orientations, the individual or community beginnings of such identities, and the effects of geography on lesbian communities. This provocative book, Stein's second, is an important contribution to the discussion of what we mean when we call ourselves lesbian.

From Library Journal
These two books are so similar as to be interchangeable; the only significant difference is that one study was done on the West Coast and the other on the East. Stein (sociology, Univ. of Oregon) interviewed 30 women in the San Francisco area, while Esterberg (sociology and director of women's studies, Univ. of Missouri, Kansas City) interviewed 43 women in an unidentified Northeast community. Focusing on the integration of feminism, antiracism, and social justice with lesbian lives, both discussions are fascinating, and their portrayal of lesbian identity as changeable and fluid is valuable. Although the word bisexual does not appear in Stein's title, her focus on bisexual women is easily as strong as Esterberg's. And Stein's discussion of separatists may be patronizing when she suggests that "separatism would give the lifelong lesbian some insurance that women she became involved with would not leave her for men." Despite these minor flaws, these are both important contributions. Recommended for academic libraries, especially those supporting lesbian, gay, and bisexual studies.?Pauline Klein, DeKalb Cty. Paris as Revolution: Writing the Nineteenth-Century City, by Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson

In nineteenth-century Paris, passionate involvement with revolution turned the city into an engrossing object of cultural speculation. For writers caught between an explosive past and a bewildering future, revolution offered a virtuoso metaphor by which the city could be known and a vital principle through which it could be portrayed.

In this engaging book, Priscilla Ferguson locates the originality and modernity of nineteenth-century French literature in the intersection of the city with revolution. A cultural geography, Paris as Revolution "reads" the nineteenth-century city not in literary works alone but across a broad spectrum of urban icons and narratives. Ferguson moves easily between literary and cultural history and between semiotic and sociological analysis to underscore the movement and change that fueled the powerful narratives defining the century, the city, and their literature. In her understanding and reconstruction of the guidebooks of Mercier, Hugo, Vallès, and others, alongside the novels of Flaubert, Hugo, Vallès, and Zola, Ferguson reveals that these works are themselves revolutionary performances, ones that challenged the modernizing city even as they transcribed its emergence.

From Library Journal
Scholars have always been aware that the French Revolution had many lasting legacies, in France and throughout the world. Ferguson (Literary France, Univ. of California Pr., 1987) further demonstrates the vibrancy of the revolutionary heritage by looking at the city of Paris itself. She argues that the city could claim revolution as its very principle. The debates among politicians, historians, and philosophers about the revolution were reflected in descriptions of the city found in guidebooks, in the new names selected for dozens of streets, in the urban renewal projects of Baron Haussmann, and in the active role the city played in the novels of Hugo, Valles, Flaubert, and Zola. Though the book is based on impressive research, its appeal to the general audience will be limited by the author's frequent reliance on jargon like "literature of articulation" and "aesthetic of iteration." For scholarly collections.

From the Inside Flap
"In this absolutely powerful and innovative book, Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson illuminates the complex links between the Revolution of 1789, the different revolutions that took place in 19th-century Paris, and two aesthetic forms characteristic of the cultural discourses of modernity: panoramic journalism and the realist and historical novels authored by Balzac, Flaubert, Hugo, Zola, and Vallès. A work of cultural history with stimulating implications, Paris as Revolution is well-structured, carefully argued and problematized, and compelling in its scholarship."—Catherine Nesci, author of La Femme mode d'emploi

"A fascinating and richly suggestive essay on the cultural geography of nineteenth-century Paris. It is imaginatively conceived, broad in its reach, boldly interdisciplinary. Ferguson's success in combining literary criticism, historical interpretation and sociological analysis to reconstruct the shifting meanings given to the experiences of urbanization and revolution is most impressive."—Jonathan Beecher, author of Charles Fourier: The Visionary and His World

Paris as symbol of the revolution
By Bo K.
An excellent literary analysis of the city of Paris, starting from 1789. The book reviews Balzac's conception of the "flaneur" as a self-possessed watcher, and then explains how Modernism seeps in and corrupts, with Baudelaire and Flaubert. Miss Parkhurst Ferguson is not merely literary in her analysis, however; this book is also part Urban study, and part history of the conception of the city of Paris; all these elements are combined with great interest. The chapter on Hugo is a bit dry, perhaps because I don't care for Hugo; and I wished that she would have written more about Zazie dans le metro than the few ending statements she makes. But overall a great read for someone interested in the history of Paris, French modernist lit, and conceptions of the Revolution(s) of Paris and France.

The story of the development of artificial light in the 19th century is not only a history of its technology but a revelation of how that technology helped forge modern consciousness. The range of subjects includes the political symbolism of streetlamps, the rise of nightlife and the shop window, and the importance of the salon in the bourgeois culture. Very Highly Recommended.

illuminating reading
By curt dilger
This rather obscure book shouldn't be; a very meticulous and perceptive history of an important subject, the history of artificial light, Schivelbusch provides excellent research and, significantly, adds unexpected observations along the way, such as the political dimension of artificial light, light as an expression of statist control. Highly recommended.

Fascinating story of Gaslight and Electric Light, filled with amazing details.
By Anne Rice
I've been searching for this kind of book for years. I read almost all of it in one sitting, enthralled by the unfolding story of the invention of gaslight and electric light, and marveling at the wonderful details about how Europeans and Americans responded to these totally revolutionary inventions, and how both helped to transform the world in which we live. I hadn't realized gaslight was invented largely to light factories, that it was an immediate product of the industrial revolution in England on the most basic level, or that its "heyday" (1850-1870) in the cities of the world was so short. The details about arc lamps and attempts to illuminate cities from high towers also surprised me. But the book also contains a wealth of information about the use of light earlier --- how well to do people only used candles up to 1800, for example, and how oil lamps developed afterwards, etc. The descriptions of early shopping streets starting in the 1700's and how they used light, mirrors and eventually (by 1850)plate glass to display their wares were enthralling. ---- The in depth discussions of the psychology of light also fascinated me --- how people respond to flickering flames, how an oil lamp became the focal point of a family gathering much as the primitive hearth had once been the focal point; how people clung to candles and oil lamps in drawing rooms even when they had gaslight in other parts of the house, etc. ---- But I cannot do justice to the richness of this book by listing these things here. This is a brilliant study of people and light on many different levels, and beautifully written and engaging from start to finish. Highly recommended. (Historical novelists will love this book; it will tell them all kinds of things about the world of the last two centuries; it's full of priceless details.)

A House of Many Mansions: The History of Lebanon Reconsidered, by Kamal Salibi

Today Lebanon is one of the world's most divided countries. But paradoxically the faction-ridden Lebanese, both Christians and Muslims, have never shown a keener consciousness of common identity. How can this be? In the light of modern scholarship, a famous Lebanese writer and scholar examines the historical myths on which his country's warring communities have based their conflicting visions of the Lebanese nation. He shows that Lebanon cannot afford this divisiveness, that in order to develop and maintain a sense of political unity, it is necesary to distinuish fact from fiction and then build on what is real in the common experience of both groups.

Salibi offers a major reinterpretation of Lebanese history and provides remarkable insights into the dynamic of Lebanon's recent conflict. In so doing, he illuminates important facets of his country's present and future. This book also gives a masterly account of how the imagined communities that underlie modern nationalism are created and will be of interest to students of international affairs as well as Near Eastern scholars.

The multi-faceted history of Lebanon.
By Utah Blaine
This book isn't so much a history of Lebanon as about how the Maronites, the Druze, the Sunnites, and the Shi'ites hold different views of the history of Lebanon. It is difficult to understand one's history if there is little concensus about what is fact and what is myth. It is this latter aspect, fact versus myth, that Salibi explores. He attempts to outline the history of Lebanon as viewed by each of the major religious/political parties and detail what is supported by historical evidence and what is not. Overall, I feel that he has succeeded. Several points of particular interest include the fact that no group in Lebanon today has any strong claim to have descended from the ancient Phoenicians, and Salibi's discussion regarding the complications of Arabic nationalism versus Islamism is particularly enlightening. If I had any complaint about this book, it is that Salibi spends too much of the text on the Maronite and Druze communities, and not enough on the Shi'ite or Sunnite. This is a rather dense book packed with details and information, and I would not consider it a light read, but it is well worth the time invested.

This is your reference in Lebanese history
By Hussain Abdul-Hussain
Those who know Kamal Salibi, know that he is not affiliated with any Lebanese political group or party and that's what shoots Salibi's review of the Lebanese history up high.
Being an academic historian, Salibi wipes out popular versions of the Lebanese history and replaces them with a more analytical, critical, and well-researched version. In the heyday of a never ending debate about the identity of the Lebanese people, an objective historical record is highly needed.
Several Maronite historians should understand that they do not come from a different ethnic stock. They must thoroughly read their historical texts and subject them to historical analysis. Maronite history has become similar to a religious faith: it is not receptive of any historical examination.
Salibi does not favor one group more than another in this book. He only classifies groups according to the available texts and what he gets in conclusion is a different story about the history of Lebanon which might be sad, but true.
The anonymous reviewer who scorns Salibi for this book is apparently writing with the current political situation (the Syrians influencing Lebanese politics) in the back of his mind. This kind of review is what historians call biased history. Salibi never suggests that Lebanon must become a Syrian province, the reviewer reached to this conclusion by him/herself.

The typical stereotype reaction
By A Customer
I found the book very good and neutral. Concerning the comments of Abdel Hussein Hussein, I would say that he did not understand the main lesson of the book. Using the typical stereotype reaction by saying: "The Maronites should understand..." Mr. Hussein just committed the same mistake that was pinpointed by Kamal Salibi. I think it is time to wake up and understand that while Maronite, Sunni and Chiaa leaders were always hand in hand in securing silently their own personal interests, they where at the same time convincing people, such as Mr. Hussein, that the community was at risk and they should react (Just note that the worst combats during the Lebanese war were inter-community ones)

Early Modern Japan, by Conrad Totman

This thoughtfully organized survey of Japan's early modern period (1568-1868) is a remarkable blend of political, economic, intellectual, literary, and cultural history. The only truly comprehensive study in English of the Tokugawa period, it also introduces a new ecological perspective, covering natural disasters, resource use, demographics, and river control.

Review
"Indispensable. . . . Beginning with the reunification of the country in the mid-16th century and continuing to the final disintegration of the Tokugawa order in the second half of the 19th century, Totman reviews all the major elements of Japanese historical development, offering a tremendous wealth of information in language that is clear, concise, and easy to comprehend."--C. L. Yates, "Choice"

From the Back Cover
This highly readable book offers a rich narrative of Japan's early modern - or Tokugawa - period (1568-1868). Drawing on an extensive body of scholarship, Totman weaves together political, economic, intellectual, literary and cultural history with imagination and skill, making this the only truly comprehensive and up to date study in English of these three centuries of Japanese history. The author broadens the context still further by bringing a unique ecological perspective to his subject, examining such topics as natural disasters, resource use and depletion, demographics, and river control. The book begins with the story of a century and a half of extraordinary growth that culminated in the urban cultural blossoming of the Genroku period (roughly 1680 to 1710). It then traces the complex pattern of political, cultural, and more fundamental environmental developments that brought Japan through the harsh decades of the eighteenth century into a period of renewed social and cultural dynamism in the 1790s. Finally, it follows the growing entanglement of these domestic trends and surging Euro-American imperialist activity that led to the Meiji Restoration and Japan's move into an era of active global engagement. Recognizing that Eurasian political boundaries are again in flux, the author devotes considerable attention to Japan's international relations during the decades after 1792 when its boundaries with Russia were gradually clarified. Totman enlivens his book throughout with biographical detail, forthright interpretation, and frequent quotations from primary sources. The extraordinary breadth of his sources and his remarkable ability to bring them together in a clear and engagingnarrative promise to make Early Modern Japan the standard work on the subject for years to come.

About the Author
Conrad Totman is Professor of History at Yale University and the author of Japan Before Perry: A Short History (California, 1981) and The Green Archipelago: Forestry in Pre-Industrial Japan (California, 1989).

Excellent Survey; 4.5 Stars
By R. Albin
This is a very fine survey of early modern Japanese history, periodized as the epoch of the Tokugawa shogunate. Totman further divides this period into 2 major components, an initial age of growth and maturation of Tokugawa society from 1600 to the early 18th century, followed by a period of stasis and relative decline characterized by attempts to preserve the essential features of Tokugawa Japan. A strong, distinctive feature of Totman's analysis is his ecological approach. The period of growth and establishment of major Tokugawa instiutions is based on population expansion, deforestation, expansion of agricultural lands, and intensive mining. By the early 18th century, Japan was approaching the limits of preindustrial expansion, and much of the remainder of the Tokugawa period should be viewed as social and political efforts to maintain the structures of Tokugawa society in the face of ecological limits.

Totman nicely describes the construction of the Tokugawa political and social system under the direction of an initial set of highly capable Shoguns. The development of a national state based on a hereditary military aristocracy leads to some remarkable outcomes. This ostensibly feudal state is relatively centralized and based on a warrior stratum that rarely actually fights. The 17th century sees the development of a vigorous national economy, a relatively high level of urbanization, and vigorous exploitation of national resources. Totman is very good on the emergence of the high culture of Japan based in the expanding large cities and the interesting intellectual developments focusing on the justification of samurai dominance and the "naturalization" of Confucianism.

The sections on the period of stasis deal equally well with the strains imposed by the attempts to live within the ecological limits of Japan, agricultural involution, the exhaustion of convenient resources of timber and precious metals, and the need to maintain the hierarchic structure of society in an increasingly monetarized economy. The various efforts of the Shogunal and domain governments at reform are described well, as are the periodic crises brought about by catastrophic famines. Increasing social strains and increasing diversity of intellectual responses to social problems are prominent themes. The injection of the major problem of dealing with expanding European-American states, which became a major feature of internal politics, in the early 19th century was clearly more than the Shogunal state could manage.

Totman is an excellent writer and the ecological perspective, in particular, gives this book a distinctive character. I would have liked to see less emphasis on cultural history and more political history in the latter half of the book. The fall of Shogunate is covered in a relatively cursory manner. These are relatively minor complaints about a very fine survey.

A Well Rounded History of Tokugawa
By Brandon
I really wanted to love this book, it has a lot of information, as a book on Tokugawa and no further reading it would be very good. However, there is seemingly some misrepresentations in this book and discrepancies in numbers to more modernly published books, despite many quoting Totman. This book provides an in depth history, political, social, economic, and some religious background in the Tokugawa period. It is relatively moderate in length with aprox 800pgs. The book itself is readable, not too academic (it's not Gadamer/Derrida/Said). Overall, I gave this book a four as it seems to have accomplished its mission statement in the intro of the book. I felt it was worth the time spent in reading it and I did learn a decent amount of statistical information that I otherwise would not have known. The works cited was also a plethora of information for further research.

Remembering the Present: Painting and Popular History in Zaire, by Johannes Fabian

This book combines ethnography with the study of art to present a fascinating new vision of African history. It contains the paintings of a single artist depicting Zaire's history, along with a series of ethnographic essays discussing local history, its complex relationship to forms of self-expression and self-understanding, and the aesthetics of contemporary urban African and Third World societies. As a collaboration between ethnographer and painter, this innovative study challenges text-oriented approaches to understanding history and argues instead for an event- and experience-oriented model, ultimately adding a fresh perspective to the discourse on the relationship between modernity and tradition.

During the 1970s, Johannes Fabian encouraged Tshibumba Kanda Matulu to paint the history of Zaire. The artist delivered the work in batches, together with an oral narrative. Fabian recorded these statements along with his own question-and-answer sessions with the painter. The first part of the book is the complete series of 100 paintings, with excerpts from the artist's narrative and the artist-anthropologist dialogues. Part Two consists of Fabian's essays about this and other popular painting in Zaire. The essays discuss such topics as performance, orality, history, colonization, and popular art.

From Library Journal
A unique style of painting developed among Zairean artists during the late colonial and postcolonial period. Often labeled "tourist-art," this emergent painting tradition has evolved considerably in recent years, moving beyond simple decorative landscape scenes to subjects of more indigenous interest. Fabian (chair, cultural anthropology and non-Western sociology, Univ. of Amsterdam) focuses on a remarkable cycle of 101 paintings that tells the modern history of Zaire from the perspective of artist Tshibumba Kanda Matulu. The volume is divided into two parts: the first reproduces the paintings together with Matulu's personal commentary, while the second offers the author's anthropological analyses of issues raised by Matulu's work. A unique study of an important development in modern African art that should be of great value to scholars, this is highly recommended for academic libraries; but it may be too narrowly focused for public libraries.?Eugene C. Burt, Art Inst. of Seattle Lib.

From the Inside Flap
"This is an extraordinarily original, powerfully argued book; provocative in the best sense of the word. The sheer juxtaposition of the terrible history of Zaire as painted by a Zairean popular artist who lived through some of the worst of it, the artist's precise and eloquent explications of his work, a bluntly factualist account of the events depicted, and Fabian's searching ethnographical commentary, without privileging any of these so different types of discourse over any of the others, raises some of the most fundamental and most difficult questions in history, art, and anthropology. Remembering the Present is a major step forward in both the presentation of cultural materials and in their analysis."—Clifford Geertz

Manylayered views of Congo/Zaire's history [4 1/2 stars]
By A Customer
Anthropologist Johannes Fabian performed an outstanding service in sponsoring painter/historian Tshibumba's unique vision of his country's history. His words and the paintings themselves offer a rather romantic look at precolonial life, but a searing indictment of the epoch of Belgian rule. The interpretation of the Mobutu period is more equivocal, partly due to living under the authority of that regime, but also because Tshibumba genuinely admired some of Mobutu's achievements. Our painter vanished (presumably deceased) in the mid to late 1970s just as the tyrant's control began to go sour; it would be fascinating to read and see how Tshibumba assessed Mobutu's decline and fall.
His history operates on three levels---through his startling folk images, his own words, and the dialogue which emerges out of interviews with Fabian. The result is probably the most fully realized popular interpretation of the history of any African country, though oriented toward Tshibumba's home province of Katanga (Shaba). Fabian's essays in Part II further enhance our understanding of their joint project, though some are dense enough to deter some students and lay readers, thus 4 1/2 stars. Overall, a stunning and memorable collaboration. If only we had more like it....
For another indigenous perspective on many of the same events, by a Katangan girl who grew to womanhood during the Mobutu era, see Suruba Wechsler, "By the Grace of God," less penetrating but rather more accessible. Useful background material is also available in works by Eduard Bustin, Crawford Young, and Phyllis Martin and David Birmingham.

a landmark in the anthropology of art and popular culture
By x andrade
this is a fascinating contribution to these fields. the book follows a dialogue about images, painting and history between a Zairean painter and the ethnographer. it anticipates current discussions on anthropology and art practices. Tshibumba, the painter, is granted the position he deserves as a creative image-maker, and a vernacular historian.

Downcast Eyes: The Denigration of Vision in Twentieth-Century French Thought, by Martin Jay

Long considered "the noblest of the senses," vision has increasingly come under critical scrutiny by a wide range of thinkers who question its dominance in Western culture. These critics of vision, especially prominent in twentieth-century France, have challenged its allegedly superior capacity to provide access to the world. They have also criticized its supposed complicity with political and social oppression through the promulgation of spectacle and surveillance.

Martin Jay turns to this discourse surrounding vision and explores its often contradictory implications in the work of such influential figures as Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, Louis Althusser, Guy Debord, Luce Irigaray, Emmanuel Levinas, and Jacques Derrida. Jay begins with a discussion of the theory of vision from Plato to Descartes, then considers its role in the French Enlightenment before turning to its status in the culture of modernity. From consideration of French Impressionism to analysis of Georges Bataille and the Surrealists, Roland Barthes's writings on photography, and the film theory of Christian Metz, Jay provides lucid and fair-minded accounts of thinkers and ideas widely known for their difficulty.

His book examines the myriad links between the interrogation of vision and the pervasive antihumanist, antimodernist, and counter-enlightenment tenor of much recent French thought. Refusing, however, to defend the dominant visual order, he calls instead for a plurality of "scopic regimes." Certain to generate controversy and discussion throughout the humanities and social sciences, Downcast Eyes will consolidate Jay's reputation as one of today's premier cultural and intellectual historians.

Excellent survey, stylistically conservative
By A Customer
Martin Jay provides us with an encyclopedic survey of the role of vision in western thought, particularly France. Jay, who is strangely not dissimilar to Greil Marcus in this respect, has the knack for picking out lesser known texts and facts and integrating them into his analysis. If youre a foucault scholar, it's worth it just for the account of Roussel's role in Foucault's epistemic development. That is just one example. It is chock full of these fascinating details.
Alas, it remains a literature review with an interesting focus. If this were a lecture, I'd bring a tape recorder, knowing that I'd collapse into slumber on the one hand while being aware that what was being said was critical to my growth as an intellectual. Unlike Marcus, who works creatively with obscure texts, Jay suffers from an academic conservatism that ends up reading like a well-done second chapter to a conventional dissertation. If that is your need or if you like that sort of thing, by all means go buy it. Go buy it anyway, it is indispensable as a survey but read it with a triple espresso at hand.

Balloon ride over tricky terrain
By Lisa A. Swanson
For those who have struggled to grasp the big picture of French
philosophy, historian Martin Jay has created a solution. His book,
eschewing the complex textual strategies of the French thinkers
he discusses, offers up a clear narrative for his readers centered
around Western philosophy's seminal concept: vision.

Not only is this book entertaining, funny, and sharply focused, but
it is also a "Guide to the Perplexed" when it comes to the arcane
world of French theory. Highly recommended not only for its
intellectual rigor, but also for its entertainment value. Thank
you Dr. Jay!

Ivan Illich likes it
By John Verity
Says Ivan Illich in a marvelous paper - Guarding the Eye in the Age of Show - available from the Pudel site in Bremen:

"Historians of scopic regimes are people who concentrate their attention on the ethology of sense

activities in different cultures and epochs. If I had to choose a name for their discipline, I would call

it "historical opsis" to distinguish it from the history of optics. It is this focus on the image that

interests me here."

And here, he offers this footnote:

"I know of no better introduction to this field than Martin Jay, Downcast Eyes: The Denigration of

Vision in Twentieth-century French Thought (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1993). The main

theme of the book is the French critique of ocularcentrisme, from Bergson, Bataille, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty

to Lacan, Foucault, Barth, Derrida and Irigaray. However, the three introductory chapters to the body of the

book, which deal with the gaze from Plato to Descartes, and the large bibliography - usually critically

evaluated in the footnotes which refer to English and German twentieth-century authors - make this volume

a reference tool of a new kind."
