Until now the large body of socially focused Bengali literature has remained little known to Western readers. This collection includes some of the finest examples of Bengali short stories—stories that reflect the turmoil of a changing society traditionally characterized by rigid hierarchical structures of privilege and class differentiation.

Written over a span of roughly ninety years from the early 1890s to the late 1970s, the twenty stories in this collection represent the work of five authors. Their characters, drawn from widely varying social groups, often find themselves caught up in tumultuous political and social upheaval. The reader encounters Rabindranath Thakur's extraordinarily spirited and bold heroines; Manik Bandyopadhyay's peasants, laborers, fisherfolk, and outcastes; and Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay's rural underclass of snake-charmers, corpse-handlers, stick-wielders, potters, witches, and Vaishnava minstrels. Mahasweta Devi gives voice to the semi-landless tribals and untouchables effectively denied the rights guaranteed them by the Constitution; Hasan Azizul Huq depicts the plight of the impoverished of Bangladesh.

A well-edited, truly moving book
By A Customer
Bardhan has put together an amazing collection of short stories. The writers belong to different generations and different periods in modern South Asian history, but the selection has so clear an aim that each story belongs as much in the book as the others. The translations are excellent, too. There is none of the awkwardness that one often encounters when a culture is interpreted to the world. As for the stories themselves, they describe the terrible, often chilling, near-helplessness of women and outcastes in Bengal. And yet, even in the most wretched lives, they portray hope and grim triumph. They are remarkably devoid of maudlin compassion.

Short stories providing a view of the poorest in Bengal.
By A Customer
This is an absolutely wonderful anthology of short stories; one of the best I've ever read. All are quite well written. Most of the stories are about the poorest of the poor in this area of India. While many of the stories are heart-breaking, it is not a depressing read. The title gives an accurate description of the book's focus. Some of the stories were written at the turn of the century & some more recently. Anyone who is interested in India, peasants, poor people or feminism will love this book.

Documenting America, 1935-1943 (Approaches to American Culture S)From University of California Press

Between 1935 and 1943, a group of photographers under the direction of Roy Emerson Stryker set out to photograph the United States for the Farm Security Administration and the Office of War Information. Photographs taken by this celebrated group, whose ranks included Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn, Gordon Parks, Russell Lee and Walker Evans, have since become icons of the 1930s and 1940s. In recent years, however, their work has been reproduced with little discussion of the particular circumstances surrounding its creation.

Documenting America takes a fresh look at these remarkable photographs. The book opens with two incisive essays by Lawrence Levine and Alan Trachtenberg that examine issues central to photography and American culture. While Levine explains how the pictures portray the complexity of life in the period, balancing scenes of Depression hard times with images of the pleasures of life, Trachtenberg analyzes the way in which viewers read photographs and the role of the government picture file that stands between the creation of the photographs and their use. Both essayists raise important questions about Stryker's grand ambition of a photographic record of America, about the "ways of seeing" that have grown up around the most famous of these photographs, and about the whole enterprise of documentary photography and the conventions of realism.

The images themselves are presented in series selected from groups of pictures created by single photographers. A documentary photographer often makes dozens of exposures to portray different elements of the subject, experiment with camera angles, and cover the stages of an event or steps of a process. By studying these pictures in series, we come closer to the photographer working in the field. We see a tenant farming community in Gee's Bend, Georgia, the activities of the Salvation Army in San Francisco, and the hubbub and commotion that filled Chicago's Union Railway Station in 1943. Texts accompanying each of the book's fifteen series describe the circumstances that gave rise to the creation of the pictures and discuss the relation between government policy and the subjects of the photographs. The nearly three hundred images included vividly portray America in the last bitter years of the Great Depression and the first years of the Second World War.

From Library Journal
This work celebrates the 50th anniversary of the government photographic section, directed by Roy Stryker, that operated within the Farm Security Administration, the Resettlement Administration, and the Office of War Information and produced many of the photographic icons of the 1930s post-Depression era. The editors provide a sample of the section's work in 15 thematic series with subjects bothreform-minded and purely documentary. Two excellent essays and the texts accompanying each series provide historical, cultural, and critical background, making this as much a social history as a photohistorical one. A thorough description and fine tribute to the collection of 77,000 FSA-OWI images at the Library of Congress.

A Bit of Family History
By suzy
I purchased this book for my Mother specifically for the chapter that covered the street she grew up on, 61st Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue NYC. Many good memories of 326! My great-grandparents owned the building. All their children lived there (my great-aunts and uncles. When my parents married, they had an apartment there too. The facade of the building hasn't changed all that much, although Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church was torn down (across the street). Very sad, I remember visiting the chapel of The Little Infant downstairs. All the oldtimers are gone now. I wonder if Victor B. is still on the first floor.

Enjoyed the rest of the book as well. Should have purchased a copy for myself.

Seven Doors to Islam: Spirituality and the Religious Life of Muslims, by John Renard

Seven Doors to Islam reveals the religious worldview and spiritual tradition of the world's one billion Muslims. Spanning the breadth of Islamic civilization from Morocco to Indonesia, this book demonstrates how Muslims have used the literary and visual arts in all their richness and diversity to communicate religious values. Each of the seven chapters opens a "door" that leads progressively closer to the very heart of Islam, from the foundational revelation in the Qur'an to the transcendent experience of the Sufi mystics. However, unlike most studies of Islam, which see spirituality as the concern of a minority of mystical seekers, Seven Doors demonstrates its central role in every aspect of the Islamic tradition.

Fantastic Introduction to the Religious Life of Muslims
By Dalton
This is a great book. That's almost all I can say. The author deeply understands the ethos of the Islamic world and conveys it lucidly in his writing. I would recommend this book to anyone in the West who is looking for a finely written and accessible introduction to Islamic belief and practice.

Islamic religion and spirituality seems to be the author's specialty. He has also written these wonderful books I've been reading:

An Unorganized, Tiresome Read
By Kurt
I came at this book as someone who wanted to learn more about the faith of Islam. This book provides a very in depth view into the spirituality of the Islamic faith. But is unorganized and often the tone of the author turns one away from the book because it is simply haughty. Would not recommend for someone who just wants to learn more about Islam.

Black African Cinema, by Nwachukwu Frank Ukadike

From the proselytizing lantern slides of early Christian missionaries to contemporary films that look at Africa through an African lens, N. Frank Ukadike explores the development of black African cinema. He examines the impact of culture and history, and of technology and co-production, on filmmaking throughout Africa.

Every aspect of African contact with and contribution to cinematic practices receives attention: British colonial cinema; the thematic and stylistic diversity of the pioneering "francophone" films; the effects of television on the motion picture industry; and patterns of television documentary filmmaking in "anglophone" regions. Ukadike gives special attention to the growth of independent production in Ghana and Nigeria, the unique Yoruba theater-film tradition, and the militant liberationist tendencies of "lusophone" filmmakers. He offers a lucid discussion of oral tradition as a creative matrix and the relationship between cinema and other forms of popular culture. And, by contrasting "new" African films with those based on the traditional paradigm, he explores the trends emerging from the eighties and nineties.

Clearly written and accessible to specialist and general reader alike, Black African Cinema's analysis of key films and issues—the most comprehensive in English—is unique. The book's pan-Africanist vision heralds important new strategies for appraising a cinema that increasingly attracts the attention of film students and Africanists.

The Politics of Plunder: Aitolians and their Koinon in the Early Hellenistic Era, 279-217 B.C. (Hellenistic Culture and Society), by Josep

Between 279 and 229 B.C., the Aitolian koinon, a federation of mountain cantons in west central Greece, expanded to incorporate many of the neighboring lands and peoples lying between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. This new political configuration contributed to the development of modern systems of federal democracy based on proportional representation. Despite these institutional advances, the Aitolians and their polity are reviled in the ancient historical tradition, which views them as backward, semi-barbarous brigands.

The Politics of Plunder is the first English-language book in over a century to examine the political history of the Aitolian koinon in its era of expansion. Joseph Scholten presents a chronological reconstruction of the koinon's course of expansion, synthesizing a number of recent studies covering Aitolian topography, epigraphy, and institutional development that help to compensate for deficiencies in the ancient narrative record. His study is the first to ask how a people and a polity so detested by their contemporaries succeeded in making such fundamental contributions to their regional political culture.

Scholten's careful investigation charts a middle course that neither whitewashes the Aitolians nor credulously accepts the biased ancient tradition. This balanced approach provides a much-needed fresh perspective on the Aitolians and their koinon. Discussing the history of the ancient Aegean Greek world and the political, economic, and social history of the Hellenistic Era, this book will interest anyone concerned with those subjects or fascinated by the development of ancient Greek political institutions and theories, particularly federalism.

From the Inside Flap
"This book does genuinely fill a significant gap . . . and will serve as a reliable guide to the sources and scholarship on Greece in the third century."—Stanley Burstein

"The Aetolians of the 3rd cent. BCE (even more than the Macedonians, if not quite at the level of the Gauls) were the bogey-men and whipping-boys for every Greek state, from Athens to Achaea, that considered itself more civilized. Polybius in particular couldn't stand them. Primitive, treacherous, murderous, piratical—the epithets pile up like snow on Helicon. Yet, paradoxically, these sub-Homeric ruffians also instituted a remarkably modern-sounding democratic federation, which even (despite Greek ethnic exclusiveness) offered membership to non-Aetolian groups. Resolving the paradox has stimulated Scholten to produce a really wonderful book. He has reinforced the scanty literary sources with some of the most thorough epigraphical and numismatic work I have ever seen in a work of scholarship. Best of all, he has walked every inch of Aetolia and knows its geography backwards. His research (while not palliating the Aetiolians' "predatory economic self-service," a nice phrase) sets their federation in its political context as never before, and, what's more, does so in elegant and drily ironic prose. The Politics of Plunder invites comparison with N.G.L. Hammond's Epirus, and will, I suspect, in the long run prove a more durable and substantial achievement."—Peter Green

Crack In America: Demon Drugs and Social JusticeFrom University of California Press

Crack in America is the definitive book on crack cocaine. In reinterpreting the crack story, it offers new understandings of both drug addiction and drug prohibition. It shows how crack use arose in the face of growing unemployment, poverty, racism, and shrinking social services. It places crack in its historical context—as the latest in a long line of demonized drugs—and it examines the crack scare as a phenomenon in its own right. Most important, it uses crack and the crack scare as windows onto America's larger drug and drug policy problems.

Written by a team of veteran drug researchers in medicine, law, and the social sciences, this book provides the most comprehensive, penetrating, and original analysis of the crack problem to date. It reviews the social pharmacology of crack and offers rich ethnographic case studies of crack binging, addiction, and sales. It explores crack's different impacts on whites, blacks, the middle class, and the poor, and explains why crack was always much less of a problem in other countries such as Canada, Australia, and The Netherlands.

Crack in America helps readers understand why the United States has the most repressive, expensive, and yet least effective drug policy in the Western world. It discusses the ways politicians and the media generated the crack scare as the centerpiece of the War on Drugs. It catalogues the costs of the War on Drugs for civil liberties, situates crack use and sales in the political economy of the inner cities in the 1980s, and shows how the drug war led to the most massive wave of imprisonment in U.S. history. Finally, it explains why the failures of drug prohibition have led to the emergence of the harm reduction movement and other opposition forces that are changing the face of U.S. drug policy.

Review
"Thoroughly researched and expertly written. . . the definitive book on crack."--"In These Times

From the Inside Flap
"The editors and authors have produced an important work in the ongoing debate about the effect and efficacy of U.S. drug policy. Authoritative in its analysis and comprehensive in its embrace, this work will contribute importantly to the policy debate. A must-read for anybody concerned about developing a strategy to improve the health and well-being of our communities."—Ronald Dellums, Member of Congress

"Crack in America is a devastating, sad, angry, though always scholarly book about the many failures of our national drug policy. The contributors make a convincing case that America is unable to solve the problems associated with crack because it is unwilling to deal with extreme economic and racial inequality except by stigmatizing and punishing the unequal. The book is of urgent importance—a powerfully persuasive and illuminating inquiry about America. I wish it could be required reading for the White House and all the agencies responsible for the country's drug problems."—Herbert J. Gans, Columbia University

"Indispensable for understanding the real roots of hard drug abuse in America's inner cities. It shows brilliantly how our drug policies have made our drug problem worse and points the way out of the drug war morass. A passionate and ultimately hopeful book."—Kurt Schmoke, Mayor of Baltimore

"Crack in America accurately and forcefully examines in detail the myth and the reality of crack. It is a must-read for any American concerned about drugs in our society and for any reader valuing honesty and scholarship compellingly presented."—Robert W. Sweet, U.S. District Judge

"A penetrating analysis by a variety of scholars which explodes many of the government propagated myths regarding crack cocaine."—Joseph D. McNamara, Stanford University

"Reinarman, Levine and their colleagues bring a keen sociological sensibility to their analysis of our contemporary moral panic. These essays make clear that crack policy is more the problem than the so-called crack epidemic. And they go on to disentangle the intricate ways in which American culture and economy, and particularly our racism, classicism and sexism, are implicated both in the use of crack and its repression."—Frances Fox Piven, Dept. of Political Science, CUNY Graduate Center

"Scholarly, lucid, and readable. . .the most original and thoughtful analysis of the American crack panic. The contributors demonstrate compellingly the relationship between social justice and public health."—Lester Grinspoon, M.D., Harvard Medical School

"An immensely rich book and an extraordinary source of information. . . . Since crack is not only America's but the world's latest demon drug, and since rational alternatives to repression are at the order of the day the world over, the book is indispensable reading for concerned students, scholars, politicians, and citizens everywhere."—Henner Hess, Goethe-Universitat (Frankfurt, Germany)

"A penetrating analysis by a variety of scholars which explodes many of the governmentpropagated myths regarding crack cocaine."--Joseph D. McNamara, Stanford University

"Reinarman, Levine and their colleagues bring a keen sociological sensibility to their analysis of our contemporary moral panic. These essays make clear that crack policy is more the problem than the so-called crack epidemic. And they go on to disentangle the intricate ways in which American culture and economy, and particularly our racism, classicism and sexism, are implicated both in the use of crack and its repression."--Frances Fox Piven, Dept. of Political Science, CUNY Graduate Center

"Scholarly, lucid, and readable. . .the most original and thoughtful analysis of the American crack panic. The contributors demonstrate compellingly the relationship between social justice and public health."--Lester Grinspoon, M.D., Harvard Medical School

"An immensely rich book and an extraordinary source of information. . . . Since crack is not only America's but the world's latest demon drug, and since rational alternatives to repression are at the order of the day the world over, the book is indispensable reading for concerned students, scholars, politicians, and citizens everywhere."--Henner Hess, Goethe-Universitat (Frankfurt, Germany)

The book is well-written, clear-sighted and informative
By A Customer
In Crack in America, Reinerman and Levine have brought together a wealth of facts and expertise. The authors' chapters are well-written, and hardhitting. Their arguments are carefully composed, and the authors present sensible alternative models. The editors and their contributors have obviously spent time and effort researching the medical, legal and social components of drugs in America and elsewhere. Reinerman, Levine, and their contributors - Loren Siegel and Ira Glasser from the ACLU, Troy Duster, Ethan Nadelman from the Lindesmith Center, Marsha Rosenbaum and Sheigla Murphy, et al, are informed by a sense of social context - the issues of class, race, the economy and popular culture. They are sharp-minded thinkers and writers, who obviously should be involved in the creation of our nation's drug policies. The answers aren't easy, but if we are going to start anywhere we first need to ask the right questions. Levine's and Reinman's book poses substantial questions and issues that must be addressed if we plan to be a more inclusive society, and not a culture that marginalizes and demonizes people in trouble.

Absolutely essential reading
By Frederick M. Toates
This is a truly brilliant book that utterly destroys the logic (if one could call it that) behind the so-called war on drugs. It is written in a highly accessible language such as to be appropriate for anyone with a concern for this topic. The genuine sympathy and concern of the various authors shines out from each chapter. In my view, it should be required reading for every social worker, judge, police officer and policy maker. I am normally a stern critic but I cannot praise it too highly.

The Genesis of Heidegger's Being and Time, by Theodore Kisiel

This book, ten years in the making, is the first factual and conceptual history of Martin Heidegger's Being and Time (1927), a key twentieth-century text whose background until now has been conspicuously absent. Through painstaking investigation of European archives and private correspondence, Theodore Kisiel provides an unbroken account of the philosopher's early development and progress toward his masterwork.

Beginning with Heidegger's 1915 dissertation, Kisiel explores the philosopher's religious conversion during the bleak war years, the hermeneutic breakthrough in the war-emergency semester of 1919, the evolution of attitudes toward his phenomenological mentor, Edmund Husserl, and the shifting orientations of the three drafts of Being and Time. Discussing Heidegger's little-known reading of Aristotle, as well as his last-minute turn to Kant and to existentialist terminology, Kisiel offers a wealth of narrative detail and documentary evidence that will be an invaluable factual resource for years to come.

A major event for philosophers and Heidegger specialists, the publication of Kisiel's book allows us to jettison the stale view of Being and Time as a great book "frozen in time" and instead to appreciate the erratic starts, finite high points, and tentative conclusions of what remains a challenging philosophical "path."

From Library Journal
Martin Heidegger's Being and Time holds unchallenged rank as the most influential work of 20-century Continental philosophy. But its complexities baffle many readers. Kisiel (philosophy, Northern Illinois Univ.) argues that the key to understanding Being and Time lies in a detailed account of the book's origins. Accordingly, he analyzes Heidegger's dissertation, university classes, and preliminary drafts of Being and Time . Heidegger continually struggled with the project of his teacher Husserl to make philosophy a strict science. In these efforts, he made detailed studies of the New Testament and Aristotle. Under the influence of Kant, he claimed in Being and Time to establish philosophy as a strict science, a view he soon abandoned. Kisiel's work will prove indispensable to scholars and students of Heidegger. Recommended for academic libraries.

Review
"[Kisiel] surveys the conceptual laboratory in which Heidegger in those years mixed his 'blasting powder.' The English reader can thus for the first time get acquainted in depth with the philosophical 'inside story.' The German reader is likewise indebted to Kisiel for many a surprise. . . . An impressive and important book."--Dieter Thoma, "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

From the Inside Flap
"A magisterial accomplishment that will be the standard in this field for years to come."—John D. Caputo, Villanova University

"Outstanding, entirely original, absolutely groundbreaking. . . . It is quite simply the best account to date—and the best we can expect for decades in the future—of the philosophical development of Heidegger's early thought."—Thomas Sheehan, Loyola University

Absolutely essential...
By Brian C.
There are two books, in my opinion, which are absolutely essential reading for anyone who is serious about understanding Heidegger's Being and Time and this is one of them (the other is Heidegger's lecture course on Plato's Sophist). This is not an introductory book and so it should not be the first book you read on Heidegger or on Being and Time, but if you have already read Being and Time and have at least a basic idea of what Heidegger is attempting to do in Being and Time this book will deepen that understanding a hundred fold.

Kisiel attempts to locate the origins of some of the major concepts of Being and Time (such as facticity, hermeneutic situation, falleness, etc.) in some of the lecture courses Heidegger was giving both before and during the time when he was working on Being and Time. Heidegger was often a far more lucid lecturer than he was a writer (one of the reasons I place so much value on his lecture course on Plato's Sophist) so focusing on his lecture courses is a good way of getting to the heart of what Heidegger is trying to do with his new vocabulary and neologisms without getting bogged down in them. Heidegger's course on the phenomenology of religion (as discussed in this book) is especially illuminating in that regard. I'm not sure anyone can fully understand what Heidegger is doing when he determines Dasein's being as care without reading what he has to say about Augustine in those courses and without understanding Heidegger's claim that Augustine's "restless heart in search of God" penetrates much more deeply into the self-world and factic life of Dasein than Descartes's cogito ergo sum. As a bonus many of the lecture courses Kisiel discusses are now available in English translation for the reader who would like to compare the lectures themselves to Kisiel's descriptions.

Kisiel also points out the importance of the notion of formal indication in understanding Heidegger's concepts. This whole problematic arises out of Heidegger's confrontation with the Neo-Kantians (who are not widely read anymore). The problem, put simply, is a question as to how it is possible to approach the nonobjectifiable subject matter of phenomenology without already inflicting an objectification on it? (pg. 48). Or, to put it another way, how is it possible to describe the concrete movement of life reflectively without falsifying it? Formal indication is Heidegger's solution to this problem. With formal indication the philosopher searches for a concept that is drawn from the actual temporal intentional movement of experience and which "says to show" as opposed to a concept which subsumes a particular under an abstract universal. This is the method Heidegger uses in Being and Time and it is part of what makes Being and Time so difficult for those who are new to Heidegger.

I should point out quickly that the first 50 to 100 pages of Kisiel's book are the most challenging. I had to read the first sections of this book three or four times before they started to sink in, but the later sections, while not easy by any means, are at least easier. So do not be discouraged if you are having a hard time making it through the beginning sections. I would suggest just plowing through, trying to make sense out of what you can, and then returning when you have digested the later sections of the book.

When I have time I intend to add to my review and provide a fuller summary of the contents of this wonderful book, but for now I will simply give it my wholehearted endorsement and encourage anyone who is at all serious about Heidegger to get a copy as soon as possible. It is a book you will want to read and return to over and over.

Extremely valuable and insightful
By Jason Powell
By extensive research and investigation into the earliest records of Heidegger's development as a philosopher, Kisiel's book gives great insight into the perspective that enframed Being and Time. It is a heavy duty book, it is by no means a summary or interpretation of Being and Time, but it is extremely insightful for getting into the way Heidegger thought and his understanding of philosophy prior to him because it gives such a rich context and background. The amount of documentation and scrutiny outlining the intellectual scene and Heidegger's progressive reactions is unmatched.

The most important philosophical inquiry into Heidegger-EVER
By A Customer
Dr. Kisiel's painstaking work elaborately explicates seemingly every mode of thought leading up to Heidegger's creation of Being & Time. In my opinion, no other philosopher has ever penetrated deeper into both the historical and philosophical origins of Being & Time. While due to the "density" of the arguments proffered, Genesis is a difficult book to wholly grasp, it still stands as one of the BEST resources to compliment Being & Time. It's a MUST HAVE for any student of phenomenology.

From Publishers Weekly
This book concludes French historian Braudel's groundbreaking trilogy, in which he concentrates on the ordinary human activities that underlie modern politics, commerce and culture. Here he tells the story of Western Europe's gradual domination of international trade in the modern era. "A magisterial work," PW observed.

From Library Journal
Originally published in the early 1980s, Civilization traces the social and economic history of the world from the Middle Ages to the Industrial Revolution, although his primary focus is Europe. Braudel skims over politics, wars, etc., in favor of examining life at the grass roots: food, drink, clothing, housing, town markets, money, credit, technology, the growth of towns and cities, and more. The history is fascinating and made even more interesting by period prints and drawings.

Changes your perspective on history
By Amazon Customer
I am a huge reader of history, and this is one of my favorites of all time. While full of interesting facts and stories, it is set apart from most books by the depth of the analysis it provides. It walks the line between history and social science, hinting at a theory of civilization and capitalism based on case studies from around the world. Though professional it is not dry (though I am infamous for enjoying a good dry book). My only criticism of it is the parts where it ventures into the cyclic theory of history. This is a European (or French) historiographic technique of trying to edition long recurring cycles. Frankly I find the concept forced (even more frankly, it's bunk!) and it always annoys me when I come across it...but it is part of the historical tradition Braudel was involved in, so it must simply be tolerated as a blemish on an otherwise stunning achievement.

from market mechanisms to policy and history
By Robert J. Crawford
Where the first two volumes of this trilogy covered living standards and the evolution of market mechanisms and capital accumulation, this one completes the picture with detailed historical examinations of the policies of the most successful cities and nations in the development of capitalism.
In fascinating detail, Braudel starts with the trade system of Venice, which allowed that tiny and resourceless city-state to dominate the world trade economy for centuries, and which culminated in the golden age of Amsterdam. THese cities, he argues persuasively, pushed commercial and financial capitalism to new heights, that is, with a combination of banking and control of trade routes, they created monopolies that benefitted themselves largely at the expense of their trading partners. They did so with a combination of readily mobilisable financial capital, clever warehousing (particularly in Amsterdam, which was like a perpetual market fair) that allowed them to control supplies and hence sell items at the right time for the higest price, domination of shipbuilding technologies as well as naval prowess (i.e. state piracy), and the control of the origin of their supplies, as in the Dutch East Indies for the spice trade. Braudel argues that it was a conscious policy. He also deliniates how Spain and then Portugal were beaten.
He then moves on to the birth of industrial capitalism in England in the late 18th C, which the loss of the American colonies - and hence ended its military obligations there while trade increased - facilitated. The great difference here, which he argues is a creative extension of the other long-existing forms of capitalism rather than its true beginning as many claim - was that investment was made in new technologies. It is similar to what the U.S. and Japan have done as major economic powers with different industrial systems: the U.S. had the largest national market, while Japan created cartels that could control prices (going after market share rather than immediate profit).
Braudel also examines basic questions of how an economy is successfully ?revolutionised.? What makes inventions take off in one society and not another? Is it one factor, or many acting together in concert? In particular, he compares the cases of the newly de-colonised United States and Latin American, in which the former was able to place itself at the center of the world economy and compete while the latter were weak and hence consigned to a subordinate role by the superpower of the day, Great Britain. He also examines the case of France, which was never able to enter the first rank of commercial and industrial nations prior to the 20C because, he argues, Paris (an administrative and not a trade capital) dominated the country and never learned to respect entrepreneurs.
These arguments are truly fascinating and presented with the perfect amount of detail: not too much as is often the case with Simon Schama, and not so little that only specialists can understand it. While it is sometimes difficult to follow his thread of logic, there is so much to learn from this book that I will consult it for the rest of my professional life. As a measure of its interest, I kept a marker in the footnotes, where I loved to look for references on virtually every page.
Nonetheless, as a 2000-page book that I loved, I am glad that it is done! It took me nearly two years to get through it all and I wished at times that it was more succinct. I found myself fliiping through it to see where illustrations would shorten the text. The conclusion, which attempts to offer persoective on the present, is also badly dated.
All in all, this is the most interesting and best economic history that I have ever read.
