Romance and the

Hollywood films about Asians and interracial sexuality are the focus of Gina Marchetti's provocative new work. While miscegenation might seem an unlikely theme for Hollywood, Marchetti shows how fantasy-dramas of interracial rape, lynching, tragic love, and model marriage are powerfully evident in American cinema.

The author begins with a discussion of D. W. Griffith's Broken Blossoms, then considers later films such as Shanghai Express, Madame Butterfly, and the recurring geisha movies. She also includes some fascinating "forgotten" films that have been overlooked by critics until now.

Marchetti brings the theoretical perspective of recent writing on race, ethnicity, and gender to her analyses of film and television and argues persuasively that these media help to perpetuate social and racial inequality in America. Noting how social norms and taboos have been simultaneously set and broken by Hollywood filmmakers, she discusses the "orientalist" tensions underlying the construction of American cultural identity. Her book will be certain to interest readers in film, Asian, women's, and cultural studies.

Eroticism, Gender, and Race in a Sample of Hollywood Movies Featuring Asian Characters
By Etienne RP
In Romance and the "Yellow Peril", Gina Marchetti focuses on the construction of interracial sex and romance in a sample of Hollywood movies covering more than a half-century of productions, from early silent films to more recent blockbusters. Each chapter takes up one narrative pattern commonly found in Hollywood fiction--rape and the lynching mob, female rapture and captivity, Madame Butterfly in her many reincarnations, the myth of the white knight saviour, the parallel pair of lovers with opposed fates, etc.--and uses a sampling of one, two, or three films to look closely at the discursive strategies Hollywood employs in these tales of interracial romance.

By looking at these narratives critically, a picture can begin to emerge of the way in which Hollywood sets norms and breaks taboos, offers forbidden pleasures, and maintains unequal racial, gender and class hierarchies. The analysis goes beyond the mere denunciation of racial prejudice to reveal an ambivalence in most stories or aesthetics that allows for a number of potentially subversive readings. As Marchetti states, "Perhaps one reason for the staying power of these narratives can be found in their ability to voice resistance, to allow for at least a moment the possibility that women may be right to demand independent thought and action, that other races may not be inferior, that other ways of life may have a right to exist." These moments of undecidability and contradiction open the space for deconstruction and critique, offering viewers a number of interpretive positions.

In the 1950s, US military personel stationed in Japan were distributed pamphlets with titles like "Things You Are Required to Know Before Marrying Orientals" and "But Will Your Family Accept Her?" Hollywood movies, always quick to pick up social issues and turn them into stories and glamour, addressed the issue of interracial sexuality and used melodrama and romance to plead for intercultural understanding. But they did so in a deeply ambiguous and contradictory manner. The sources of this ambiguity were threefold. First, interracial relations were eroticized and projected onto a sentimental plane. Second, the liberal call for racial tolerance obfuscated a conservative vision of gender relations and power structures. Third, racial stereotypes surfaced behind the veneer of openness and inclusiveness. Following Gina Marchetti, let's review these three dimensions of eroticism, gender, and race in her sample of Hollywood movies.

For Hollywood, the exotic has always rhymed with the erotic. Hollywood used the lure of the Orient to titillate and sexually arouse male viewers, as in the poster of the movie Sayonara starring Marlon Brando and Japanese actress Miiko Taka that serves as the cover picture of this book. As the poster illustrates, Hollywood offered the provocative possibility of a meeting of Asia and America within the sexual realm. One of the enduring aspects of the Western vision of Asia involves the Orient's supposedly intrinsic seductiveness. Associated with material opulence, moral laxity, sensuality, cultural decadence, and exotic beauty, this seductiveness implies a peculiar spiritual danger and often hidden threat for the Westerner. Mata Hari usually hides a dagger in her garter, and the sexual permissiveness that US soldiers and expat workers may experience in Asian cities poses a threat to the functioning of the bourgeois family back home.

In interracial tales of seduction, the attractions of Asian sexuality are often offset by an inevitable tragic ending. The Asian seductress or seducer generally dies, and the moral lapse of the Westerner finds some suitable expiation. Indeed, because the heroine or male figure is punished by death for any taboos she or he may have broken, these films are often more open in their exploration and expression of female sexuality. The tragic end of Madame Butterfly or similar characters also conjures up ambivalent feelings among those viewers who see in her fate not the justified consequence of miscegenation but the unfair sacrifice of a woman's desire. In more recent stories love may triumph over social stigma, but each narrative upholds that stigma by exacting a price for criticizing accepted social practices. In more general terms, Hollywood pays tribute to the all-compassing nature of heterosexual romantic love, but also suggests other attachments and longings that do not fit squarely into this mold.

Hollywood's vision of the Orient is heavily gendered: stories generally favour romances involving white males and Asian females. Although most movies call for racial tolerance and appear to condemn racism, they never question the racial hierarchy that makes Asian women available to white males but preclude the possibility of a union between white women and Asian men. Their happy ending upholds the right of the white hero to tear the heroine away from her own culture and independent lifestyle. The conception of Asian feminity as alluring, provocative, and mysterious as well as passive, yielding, and vulnerable reinforce traditional notions of masculinity that appear to be challenged at home. Romantic love across the ethnic divide promises spiritual transcendence and intercultural harmony while actually delivering female passivity, domesticity, and a rationalization of women's subservient role. Indeed, by playing the Caucasian woman off against the Asian woman, Hollywood can affirm male identity against the threat of the Western "new" woman, empowered by an emerging feminism and increased access to positions of independence and leadership within society. Thus films made in the postwar period can uphold both the gender and racial status quo by depicting Asian women as more truly "feminine" than Western women, who are perceived as having sacrificed their feminity and as posing a threat to traditional conceptions of masculinity. Only in Asia can the Western man find "true" love.

The film advertised on the book cover illustrates this point. The hero, played by Marlon Brando, leaves his American fiancée for a Japanese actress playing in an all-female musical company, while she develops a platonic interest for a Kabuki actor. Secondary characters and subplots also feature love triangles and opposite fates. As the author shows, if Sayonara is about racial tolerance and understanding, it is also about keeping women in their "place" as wives and mothers. Here the conservative treatment of gender stands as a correction to the film's more liberal treatment of race. If Sayonara questions national and racial boundaries on one level, it also affirms and solidifies very conservative notions of gender identity and sexuality on another. Also Sayonara seems to be saying that just as it is natural for men to love and dominate passive women, it is natural for America to take a similar dominant posture toward Japan. Although mildly broached at the film's outset, questions surrounding both male and military prerogatives are eventually put to rest, and white, male, American hegemony is ultimately upheld.

In Madame Butterfly, a Japanese girl believes in the marriage of convenience that a US naval officer has contracted with her, waits faithfully for his return after he leaves, then sacrifices herself when he comes back to Japan with his new American wife, leaving behind a son to be adopted by the couple. The tale offers an ambivalence that may account for its enduring success. On one hand, it may portray men as insensitive brutes and cowards, who apply double standards and do not have the courage to honour their commitments. On the other hand, it is only through total submission to men and complete faith in their superiority that women can fulfil themselves and express a "genuine" feminity. Although the male hero may be insensitive and unfair, the Butterfly's suicide legitimizes his authority, allowing the heroine to martyr herself for the continuing domination of the West. Still on another level, the tragic romance can be viewed as a tale of pure and unconditional love, and its aesthetics has often been appropriated by gay persons who may project their own readings and interpretations.

Although there are early cases of openly racist films, such as DeMille's The Cheat or Griffith's Birth of a Nation, Hollywood movies usually attempt to make a case for racial tolerance and respect for foreign cultures. However, underneath their plea for racial harmony and compassion for lovers torn between two cultures, the underlying subtext is most often exclusionist and prejudiced. One therefore needs to go beyond the mere identification of stereotype in order to find the conservative and reactionary elements within the liberal project itself. This racial confusion is particularly visible in stories which break the usual gender pattern and feature a sexual or romantic entanglement between an Asian man and a Western woman. Early stories of rapture and captivity expose Anglo-American women to a "fate worse than death"--be it rape, forced marriage, or prostitution--and severely punish them for straying from male authority. In more modern scenarios, Asian or Eurasian males are pictured as asexual ennuch figures or as troubled masculinities.

Very often, Hollywood used Asians or Asian-Americans as signifiers of racial otherness to avoid the more traumatic and conflictual racial relations between blacks and whites. Stories of interracial romance deal with that fundamental contradiction within the American psyche between the liberal ideology of the "melting pot" and the conservative insistence on a homogeneous, white, Anglo-Saxon American identity. Just as Asian women embodied a model of "true" feminity that was proposed as an example to Anglo-Saxon women, Asians or Asian-American characters offer a model of assimilation to mainstream America that stand in sharp contrast with the more problematic integration of other minorities.

Firmly anchored in feminist theory, this book demonstrates that Hollywood's representation of Asia has more to do with the definition of American identity than with any attempt to understand other cultures. The reader will thus learn little about China, Japan, or Vietnam by reading the chapters or viewing the films under consideration. Indeed, Gina Marchetti insists that she is not an Asia specialist, and that her involvement with Asian cultures came almost by chance. But Hollywood has the power to produce images and stories that shape our perception of global realities. By returning this mirror onto ourselves, we will learn a lot about our tacit assumptions, our implicit values, and our unconscious longings.

Despite the author's cultural deftness, however, one cannot avoid a sensation of incompleteness and aporia at the end of the book. Gina Marchetti's ambition to contribute, through media critique, to "the dismantling of the existing inequitable social order" seems to me the epitome of the white savior myth she otherwise denounces. Her call to listen to alternative voices and especially to Asian cinema obfuscates the fact that Hollywood has become a master in incorporating alternative viewpoints and minority perspectives. Besides, as viewed from a less militant perspective, a feminist critic would have put more emphasis on the playful dimension of eroticism: the role-playing, the ambivalence, the game of seduction are also part of these romance stories, and one need not see the sectarian devil in all romantic details.

high-level, jargon-free scholarship
By Zangiku
despite the pompous cover-blurbs (and the long pompous review elsewhere on this page), this is a fine, unpompous read for anyone interested in "classic" hollywood, treatment of race in popular culture, history of anti-asian discrimitation, orientalism, sexuality & censorship in film, depictions of women, views of interracial romance, and more. it is well-researched, finely descriptive of films we might be unable to see, smoothly and interestingly written and containing rigorous scholarly apparatus. it is not remotely "militantly feminist" but simply thought-provoking, for those who like to have their thoughts provoked. good photos too.

The Vanished Library: A Wonder of the Ancient World (Hellenistic Culture and Society), by Luciano Canfora

The Library of Alexandria, one of the wonders of the Ancient World, has haunted Western culture for over 2,000 years. The Ptolemaic kings of Egypt—successors of Alexander the Great—had a staggering ambition: to house all of the books ever written under one roof, and the story of the universal library and its destruction still has the power to move us.

But what was the library, and where was it? Did it exist at all? Contemporary descriptions are vague and contradictory. The fate of the precious books themselves is a subject of endless speculation.

Canfora resolves these puzzles in one of the most unusual books of classical history ever written. He recreates the world of Egypt and the Greeks in brief chapters that marry the craft of the novelist and the discipline of the historian. Anecdotes, conversations, and reconstructions give The Vanished Library the compulsion of an exotic tale, yet Canfora bases all of them on historical and literary sources, which he discusses with great panache. As the chilling conclusion to this elegant piece of historical detective work he establishes who burned the books.

This volume has benefited from the collegial support of The Wake Forest University Studium.

From Publishers Weekly
Canfora, an expert in ancient literature and a professor at the University of Bari (Italy), has created a loving, anecdotal ramble through that fabled store of classical learning, the Library of Alexandria, its history and destruction, probably not, in Canfora's opinion, during Caesar's campaign but some 300 to 400 years later, as the Arab world began to encroach on a crumbling Roman Empire. The author stops along the way to consider some germane (and some tangential) subjects: the fate of Aristotle's writings, the rival library at Pergamum, Ramses II's victory over the Hittites at Kadesh, the creation of the Septuagint. To avoid further distractions on this peripatetic journey, Canfora reserves the exegesis of historical sources to the second half of the book. But this is not without its drawbacks: the sense that one is getting only half the story at any given point and the inevitable redundancies. Whatever the shortcomings of this approach to an admittedly murky subject, Canfora makes clear g the importance of the Library. No matter how much was destroyed, far more was conserved--or created--by the scholars and copyists who worked within its confines.

Review
"Canfora guides us through the labyrinth of traditions about the library, reawakening for us the myth of the world's memory safeguarded in a single place for an lite of intellectuals." -- Prfaces, Paris

"The Vanished Library is an extraordinarily innovative work of ancient history. It is not just that the book engages with cultural debates outside the field of Classics. Canfora is also experimenting with new ways of writing the history of the Classical world. . . . [The Vanished Library] is staking a claim for the reintegration of ancient history into the contemporary cultural agenda. . . . In the Anglo-American context such reintegration is definitely overdue." -- Mary Beard, London Review of Books

"This mystery has awaited, for a long time, a historian with the temperament of a writer as well as that of a scholar, and it has found its ideal match in Luciano Canfora." -- La Stampa, Turin

One thousand years as a temple of learning and wisdom
By OAKSHAMAN
I found this book both informative, as well as, a joy to read. That is because most of it reads more like a novel than a formal academic study. This is done to put the reader into the overall cultural mindset of Alexandria and the library at various points in it's almost 1000 year history.
Having done my own research on this topic in college I can vouch for the accuracy and completeness of the author's research. The truth is that there is very little surviving hard data about this institution (and absolutely no surviving archeological evidence.) There is however an original revelation that the layout of the Museum may very well have imitated that of the Ramesseum at Thebes. This is due to the fact that the Greek rulers of the Ptolemaic period adhered closely to classical Egyptian forms- at least in a superficial and material manner.
This book clears up some popular misconceptions. First of all, there was no "library" as a separate institution or structure. It was always an inseparable part of the overall Museum. Secondly, the Museum was in no sense a secular institution. It was truly a temple to the Muses, and Holy Wisdom, with sacred functions. Even under Roman control it continued to be administered by a priest.
Finally, it would seem that the Romans had nothing to do with the burning of the Museum, indeed there was no damage during the Roman conquest. The greatest damage is shown to have been done in late antiquity at the hands of Christian fanatics- like so many simular of cases of the mindless destruction of our classical heritage.

A fascinating and rewarding read
By J. Kunst
I just couldn't put it down. The first chapters are puzzling and one wonders why Canfora chose this unusual structure for his book. But like a suspense writer, he gives the reader one clue after an other and suddenly everything makes sense. In retrospect one even beliefs that this study could not have been written in a more succinct and lucid way. I finished the 200 pages in five hours and felt like I had read a whole library.

Beyond Recognition: Representation, Power, and Culture, by Craig Owens

Perhaps more than any other recent writer, Craig Owens explored the relations among the discourses of contemporary art, sexuality, and power. His familiarity with the New York art world and its practitioners in the 1970's and 1980's makes his writing an unparalleled guide to one of the most riveting periods of contemporary culture.

From Library Journal
As an editor for Art in America , a contributor to such scholarly publications as Skyline and October , and a professor of art history at Yale and Barnard, Owens was a theorist and critic of contemporary culture. Here his colleagues have assembled several of his essays and critical writings as a memorial to Owens, who succumbed to AIDS in 1990 at 39. Set within the framework of the postmodernist movement of the 1970s and 1980s, these highly esoteric essays cover such diverse topics as photography, allegory, feminism, gay politics, art in the marketplace, serial art, and psychoanalysis. The concluding section contains valuable bibliographic material and syllabi devised by Owens for his university courses. Unfortunately, the text is laden with academic jargon, making it intelligible to a select few. Recommended for specialized art history and contemporary culture collections.

Review
"Owens is now widely perceived as one of the dominant critical and theoretical voices of the 1980s, and certainly this volume of essays will do much to cement that reputation."--"Art in America

From the Back Cover
Several of the pieces in this collection testify to Owen's great love of music, though he never wrote about opera, which was one of his enduring passions. He was especially fond of the English National Opera, admiring its adventurous productions and its successful attempt to establish music theater as a genuinely popular medium in the United Kingdom. - from the book.

Beautiful Otherness : Definition is as SHIFT,FAIL, FOLLOW
By E. Burch
I wasn't planning on writing a review of this text but am so irritated by the previous reviewers "review" I find it necessary to provide some sort of information about this serious collection of work.

First of all Craig Owens was an outsider with a job a GENIUS. That means his insight is an art form, unique and idiosyncratic. He is not a Philosopher but a cultural critic with insights profound enough to cross disciplines. Yet because he reviewed art and so few are educated in art many curious minds are never introduced to his work. This does not mean the Aesthetic of Otherness as presented by Owens is discipline specific, nor does it mean Owens is not accessible. To understand Owens one must consider the work he references and its time period.

Perhaps one of the most important essays in this delightful book is The Discourse of Others. This is assigned reading for most art students and cultural studies folks. The text explores the relationship between post-modernism and Lacanian polarity. This is a contradiction since to be a Lacanian one believes in the triad of symbolic order. This is the point, otherness is not responsive. He starts the essay with a heavy use of Frankfurt School Key words reminding the reader of allegory, of antagony of protagony... he reminds us of the economic history of culture. He continues on to present the dichotomy of disassociation and power as a matter of continual cultural unrest. Perhaps this is similar to an old friend reminding us that life has never been pretty, noting this is its glory. This visualization is accomplished with reference to the writing of Strauss and Derrida, Later he brings in the thesis ie the meaning of Otherness with a direct note by Paul Ricoeur a French Anarchist and humanist. Throughout the essay he discusses the rejection of reality, of propaganda and the reception of what we now call "new media" with reference to the media's creators. This is what makes Owens profound. He is discussing the creator in an ever evolving age of virtual and using scholars like Baudrillard to sell his case. Brilliant!

In another essay Improper Names, Owens explores the relationship between cosmopolitan and local rhetorical conventions. He starts by exploring site specific conceptual art and anthropological works which incorporate the history, tradition and use of names. He discusses the insult of tourism, of accessibility , of simplification but celebrates the investigation. It becomes clear Ownes is concerned with a unique brand of isolated mass consumption, of the Branding of Otherness. Even making refernce to the work of Josef Beyus, whose personal friend once told me his work is the exploration of good people doing bad things. Making this point ever so bitter sweet. At the very least one could note some comparison to Foucault's concerns with Maddness, that as society we are obsessed with being normal, defining ourselves by the perception of illness.

Overall Owens is a committed critic who's compelling work made note of current happenings in the cultural sector during the 1980's. He was a defining and innovating force participating in elite conventional communities while simultaneously challenging every aspect of its institutional nature. When reading Owens there is never a question of one's inclusion in the investigation as his writing is a labor passion.

The Frontier in American Culture: An Exhibition at the Newberry Library, August 26, 1994-January 7, 1995, by Richard White, Patricia Nelso

Log cabins and wagon trains, cowboys and Indians, Buffalo Bill and General Custer. These and other frontier images pervade our lives, from fiction to films to advertising, where they attach themselves to products from pancake syrup to cologne, blue jeans to banks. The authors explore here the USA's pre-occupation with this uniquely American image. Richard White examines the two most enduring stories of the frontier, both told in Chicago in 1893, the year of the Columbian Exposition. One was Frederick Jackson Turner's remarkably influential lecture, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History"; the other took place in William "Buffalo Bill" Cody's flamboyant extravaganza, "The Wild West". Turner recounted the peaceful settlement of an empty continent, a tale that placed Indians at the margins. Cody's story put Indians - and bloody battles - at centre stage, and culminated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn, popularly known as "Custer's Last Stand." Seemingly contradictory, these two stories together reveal a complicated national identity. Patricia Limerick shows how the stories took on a life of their own in the 20th century and were then reshaped by additional voices - those of Indians, Mexicans, African-Americans, and others, whose versions revisit the question of what it means to be an American.

From Publishers Weekly
White and Limerick analyze some of the most pervasive images of the American West, many of which are represented in a show of the same name at Chicago's Newberry Library this fall. In his contribution "Frederick Jackson Turner and Buffalo Bill," White compares Turner, the distinguished historian who first contended that the notion of the frontier was the driving force of American history and culture, and Buffalo Bill Cody, the Wild West performer, who both appeared in Chicago in 1893. It's hard to believe the two are representing the same terrain: Turner's presentation emphasized settlers idyllically filling a near-empty continent with a few peripheral Indians, while Buffalo Bill's re-enactments were of bloody conflicts with murderous natives. Limerick's "Adventures of the Frontier in the Twentieth Century" is incisive and often wry-as is only appropriate for an historian who begins her catalogue of Western images at Disney's Frontierland. Limerick goes on to examine the shameless use of frontier/pioneer images in everything from politics to advertising. At the turn of the century, the frontier was defined as that point at which people were scarce, or as White states, "where white people were scarce"-with Limerick adding, "where white people got scared because they were scarce." Both scholars look at how the frontier influenced interactions between whites and Native Americans, Hispanics, Asians and African Americans, ultimately creating a real melting pot that, maintains Limerick, made the idea of the frontier a "cultural glue" holding Americans together.

Academic deconstructions of the frontier
By Arthur Digbee
At Chicago's 1893 Columbian Exposition, a belated celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the New World, Frederick Jackson Turner first read his essay on the frontier in American history. Elsewhere at the exposition, Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show entertained a wider audience with his image of the frontier. One hundred years later, Chicago's Newberry Library exhibited materials on the "frontier," with this book as guide.

The Newberry exhibit explored an interesting juxtaposition between Turner and Cody, and the two major essays here (by Richard White and Patricia Nelson Limerick) present their own interesting juxtapositions. Briefly put, White examines Jackson and Cody, providing insightful readings of both. Limerick sets herself two tasks, to summarize why professional historians reject the word "frontier" while investigating popular images of the same term. She demonstrates that the term remains popular among the public, and discusses how she has come to accept certain uses of the f-word that she once refused to utter.

These are very strong, scholarly essays on the frontier of yesterday and today. If that is the sort of thing you like to read, this book will not disappoint.

Myth vs Reality: understanding the American Frontier mythology
By Frank
American frontier mythology is critical if you want to understand American culture. Separating myth from historical fact is often difficult for those of us who grew up in an urban culture. During the 1950s - 1960s westerns were the staple of film-making and television. In some ways the power of those images is reflected in our 21st century political landscape.

Insightful, enjoyable, well written
By NH
The two essays in this thin volume are delightfully well written, insightful, and entertaining. In particular, Limerick's enthusiasm and wit are a testament to the often-forgotten fact that there is such a thing as enjoyable academic writing for both author and audience.

Highly recommended.

Nietzsche in Germany.
By New Age of Barbarism
_The Nietzsche Legacy in Germany: 1890 - 1990_ (1992, U. of California Press) by Steven E. Aschheim is an interesting study of the role of the radical thinking of Friedrich Nietzsche on German thought and history from 1890 to 1990. This book considers Nietzsche's legacy on movements of various natures including those of the radical left, socialists, feminists, vegetarians, and the counter-culture as well as those of the radical right including nationalists and National Socialists. The book shows a wide ranging reaction to Nietzschean thinking across Germany and the difficulties this poses for Nietzsche interpretation. On the left Nietzsche became a prominent thinker of the counter-culture and his influence was later felt even on certain Marxist thinkers (although others regarded him as a defender of the bourgeois). On the right, Nietzsche heavily influenced philosophers like Martin Heidegger and psychoanalysts like Carl Jung, but also was used by Nazis to justify their acts. The legacy of Nietzsche remains problematic because of the legacy of the Nazis in Germany who some argued were the culmination of Nietzschean philosophy. In particular, Christian thinkers objected to Nietzsche's (alleged) atheism and support for eugenics which they maintained was behind the National Socialist state. Other thinkers of the left challenged Nietzsche for various reasons or took up Nietzsche as an alternative to or addition to Marx. These issues are discussed fully by the author in this book which examines the influence of Nietzsche across the German spectrum as well as his influence on various authors such as Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, and Ernst Junger.

The book includes the following chapters -

The Historian and the Legacy of Nietzsche - explains how Nietzsch's influence has been felt on much of the cultural and political sensibilities of the twentieth century and has been prominent in Europe, America, and even Japan. In particular, the author explains that this book will deal with Nietzsche's influence on Germany. The author considers the study of Nietzsche by Walter Kaufmann and his comments regarding Nietzsche's prominence in Germany at the time. The author explains the search for an "authentic" Nietzsche and notes the influence of post-World War II analyses of this thinker. In particular, Walter Kaufmann was to attempt to re-habilitate Nietzsche in America though his results remain problematic. The author considers the role of Nietzsche and the Nietzscheans noting Nietzsche's anti-Christian immoralism and his call for a "self-creating nobility". The author considers the influence in particular of Nietzsche's _Zarathustra_ on German thought noting for example the role of this figure in the seminars of Carl Jung. The author explains that Nietzsche has been utilized for both "reactionary" and "progressive" ends noting the fact that Nietzsche has appealed to those from a wide range of cultural and political interests. In particular, Nietzsche's writings have been applied to anarchist, expressionist, feminist, futurist, nationalist, nazi, religious, sexual-libertarian, socialist, volkish, and Zionist causes. In Germany the author traces the influence of Nietzsche's ideas concerning the Ubermensch, the will to power, Dionysianism, transvaluation of all values, eternal recurrence, and immoralism. The author also notes the influence of Nietzsche's other works including _The Birth of Tragedy_ and his influence on the revolt against positivism and materialism, the generational rebellion against the liberal bourgeoisie, the era of the discovery of the unconscious, and the age of irrationalism and neo-Romanticism. The author considers Nietzsche's influence on pre-World War I German life and his culmination in the post-Christian, postrationalist, nihilist predicament.

Germany and the Battle Over Nietzsche, 1890 - 1914 - considers Nietzsche's explosion onto German cultural and political life noting the dissatisfaction with liberalism and the search for an alternative Dionysian politics. Considers the problematic over Nietzsche's "anti-German remarks" and some of the other noted German characteristics of his thought. Examines the thinking of individuals like Oswald Spengler, the Stefan George circle, the author Thomas Mann, the psychoanalyst Carl Jung, George Bataille, Rudolf Steiner, and others. Notes the role of Nietzsche and his philosophy of "beyond good and evil" as involved in criminal activity, explaining the infamous Leopold and Loeb case as well as the writings and ideas of Max Nordau (who occupied a similar place to Nietzsche) on degeneration. Explains the further influence of Nietzsche on the pre-World War I Bismarckian world, his message of the "death of God", his relationship to both liberals and conservatives who expressed anxiety over various godless cults that had developed around his influence, his relationship to Marxism, the role of his philological writings in _The Birth of Tragedy_, the role of his sister Forster-Nietzsche and her relationships to the Nazis, and the Bayreuth circle around Wagner. The author also notes the role of Nietzsche among various cultivated "Europeans" including Henri Lichtenberg, Andre Gide, Anatole France, Walther Rathenau, Gabriele d'Annunzio, Gilbert Murray, and H. G. Wells.

The Not-So-Discrete Nietzscheanism of the Avant-Garde - discusses Nietzschean influence on the avant-garde and an entire generation of fin-de-siecle artists including the development of Lebensphilosophie and its celebration of post-Enlightenment and irrationalist modalities. Notes the influence of Nietzsche on aesthetic circles including individuals like Gabriele d'Annunzio and Otto Gross. Explains the Nietzschean influence at Ascona noting the role of such luminaries as D. H. Lawrence, Franz Kafka, Jung, and Hermann Hesse. Notes the Nietzscheanism of feminists, expressionist vitalists, the circle around Stefan George, the influence on Alfred Schuler and Ludwig Klages, and the role of Bachofen's "Mutterrecht". Considers the Dionysian influence on George Kreis and Ernst Bloch as well as anarchist-liberationist and fascist and Nazi movements.

Nietzscheanism Institutionalized - explains how Nietzscheanism came to be institutionalized in for example various feminist movements (Helene Stocker and the influence of George Bernard Shaw and the "New Morality"), the role of eugenics and in particular a "feminist eugenics", Jewish influence and the influence of Nietzsche on both Jewish culture and anti-Semites, the influence of Nietzsche on various rabbis and Jewish philosophers such as Gershom Scholem and Martin Buber as well as German Zionism, the influence of Nietzsche on various Marxist ideologies, the Lebensreform (life-reform) movement, and various regenerationist movements including the German Youth Movement and the role of the Wandervogel. On the traditional right Nietzsche remained anathema but on the radical right individuals were drawn to his anti-socialism, anti-liberalism, and poetic genius. Eugenicists and social Darwinists were also drawn to Nietzsche and argued that his theories of regeneration were in line with Gobineau, Wagner, Houston Stewart Chamberlain, and their disciples. Nietzsche was also to influence individuals such as Alexander Tille and Arthur Moeller van den Bruck.

Zarathustra in the Trenches: The Nietzsche Myth, World War I, and the Weimar Republic - describes the influence of Nietzsche's _Zarathustra_ on an entire generation of young soldiers during the First World War, described as a Euro-Nietzschean war. Notes the influence of Nietzsche on such figures as his American popularize H. L. Mencken, Georges Sorel, and the young Mussolini. Explains the Nietzschean influence during the Great War on such writers as Robert Graves, d'Annunzio, and Drieu La Rochelle. Explains the influence of Nietzsche's _Zarathustra_ and Goethe's _Faust_ on the battlefield noting the Nietzschean influence on such thinkers and writer as Werner Sombart, Martin Heidegger, Alfred Baumler, Thomas Mann, Ernst Junger, and others. Notes in particular the influence Nietzschean writings had on the later dictators Hitler and Mussolini as well as Hitler's SS.

Nietzschean Socialism: Left and Right - despite Nietzsche's opposition to socialism and democratic leveling Nietzsche was to influence various forms of socialism of both the left and the right. On the left, the Nietzschean call for a "New Man" was to influence working class attitudes (where his works were widely read) along with Marx, Lasall, and Bebel. The German Social Democratic Party was influenced by Nietzsche as well as various proletarian, anarchist, and revolutionary movements. Nietzsche was also to offer a profound influence on the Frankfurt School where his works took prominence over those of Freud and Marx. On the right, Nietzsche's elitist vision influenced various right-wing socialists including Arthur Moeller van den Bruck, Oswald Spengler, and Ernst Junger.

After the Death of God: Varieties of Nietzschean Religion - Nietzsche was to influence various religious movements despite his proclamation of the "death of God". While Nietzsche was viewed with hostility by most Christians because of his supposed opposition to Christianity, some Protestant critics attempted to "Protestantize" Nietzsche's influence. Marxist critics also appropriated Nietzsche's influence and certain critics argued for a Nordic Christianity under the influence of Nietzsche and Meister Eckhart. Some argued that Nietzschean religion would bring about a "New Man" and he was to influence various religious movements and writers including Ernst Bloch, the Bolshevist project of "God-building", pagan and Nazi religion, George Bataille, Georg Lukacs, and others.

Nietzsche in the Third Reich - notes Nietzsche's influence on the Third Reich examining the Nietzscheanism of Nazism, the "aesthetic of the body" influenced by a warlike vitalist ethos of struggle and other issues. In particular, Nietzschean themes were echoed by such prominent Nazis as Heinrich Himmler, Alfred Rosenberg, Dietrich Eckhart, and Adolf Hitler. The relationship between Nietzsche's sister and the Nazi elite was also to develop, and the Nietzschean influence on Nazism was commented on by philosophers such as Jaspers, Heidegger (who was heavily influenced by Nietzsche), and Jung.

National Socialism and the Nietzsche Debate: Kulturkritik, Ideology, and History - considers the debate over Nietzsche's influence on National Socialism. For example, various Marxist critics were to maintain that Nietzsche was a strong influence on Nazism such as Georg Luckacs. Other individuals such as Hermann Rauschning and Maurice Samuel also were to comment on a Nietzschean influence on Nazism. Christians and individuals such as Peter Viereck argued that the Nietzschean rejection of Christianity had led to the brutalization of the Nazis. Neo-Marxists however such as Bloch, Adorno, Horkheimer, and Bataille were to praise Nietzsche and maintained that Nazism grew from Enlightenment ideologies. Indivduals such as Habermas were also to comment on this influence on Nazism.

Nietzscheanism, Germany, and Beyond - sums up the arguments made above and notes the influence Nietzsche had on Germany and his influence beyond Germany. In particular, Nietzsche was to influence, religion, socialism, the artistic avant-garde, the Stefan George circle, vegetarians, sexual liberationists, the Youth movements, feminism, Zionism, expressionism, volkish groups, conservative revolutionaries, and national socialism. The difficulty of categorizing Nietzschean influence and the notions of modern, modernism, and postmodern are also explained and qualified.

Afterword: Nietzsche and Nazism: Some Methodological and Historical Reflections - offers some reflections on the role that Nietzscheanism was to play on Nazism and Germany and considers the attempt to re-habilitate Nietzsche by Walter Kaufmann in America. Also notes the comments of Christian thinkers such as Roger Scruton on the diabolical influence of Nietzschean immoralism. Considers the theories of Ernst Nolte regarding the influence of Nietzschean themes on Nazism and fascism. Considers various emerging New Right movements in Germany and their indebtedness to Nietzschean influence. Finally, explains how Nazism arose and argues that Nazism continues to be regarded as a debased Nietzscheanism.

This book offers an interesting study of the influence of Nietzsche on Germany between 1890 and 1990. The author traces this influence through the First and Second World Wars including specifically the influence of Nietzsche on the Nazis. The author notes the role that Nietzsche had on movements of both the radical right and left and also considers the rise of a new Nietzschean ideology on the German New Right. The book offers much interesting material on the role of Nietzsche and the German influence of his thought.

All Things to All Ubermenschen
By benjamin
"Because both Nietzsche and Nazism are central to the twentieth-century experience and because both retain their symbolic explosiveness, the disputed nature of their relationship has become a defining part of the cultural and ideological landscape, one index to our perceptions of the modern world" (232). This brilliant quote provides in a nutshell the basic existential weight of Steven E. Aschheim's fascinating historiographical work concerning the many mis/uses of the work of Friedrich Nietzsche in Germany between 1890 and 1990. It has become customary - and for good reason, too - to see in Friedrich Nietzsche, the self-proclaimed "anti-Christ" of the late 19th century, a type of proto-Nazism, particularly in its glorification of aesthetics at the expense of any metaphysical notions of human dignity. Although this may - and perhaps even should - be the way that Nietzsche is thought of, Aschheim shows that it is by no means necessary that this should be the case. The book very much could have been titled "The Nietzsche Legacies in Germany 1890 - 1990".

St. Paul exhorted the early Christians to be "all things to all people". In what Nietzsche himself would likely consider a delightful twisting of Paul's words, we can truly write that Nietzsche was, after the time of his insanity (and even more so after his death), "all things to all Ubermenschen (overmen)". Briefly, Nietzsche proclaimed "the Overman" who would lead humanity to a more Dionysian (as opposed to more Christian) "humanity". He knew that some would consider him this great human-overcoming-of-humanity, but in his greatest (or at least most literate) work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Nietzsche denied it, painting himself as a type of proto-prophet, prophesying about the prophet who would truly point the way to the Ubermensch/Overman. This concept of the Overman - of being the Overman - seems to have caught on in Germany quite quickly.

Perhaps as with all religions - and it does indeed seem that there really was a type of Nietzschean religion (even temples dedicated to him were designed, but not built - there were as many interpretations of Nietzsche after his death as there were followers of Nietzsche. It seems that early on, he was the most popular among the avant-garde in Germany, but by first World War, he had become a household name. During the Great War, an Englishman even dubbed it the "Euro-Nietzschean War"; it appears that by this time Nietzsche was known internationally and his influence on the Germans just as much.

There is a type of subplot to this book, however, and that is the quest of certain Germans in the 20th century to subsume Nietzsche to a type of ahistoric German-ness: there were some, for instance, who would drawn a straight line from Martin Luther's longing for freedom to Friedrich Nietzsche's ultimate rejection of Christianity. The idea of a German religion and a German mysticism (which actually is at least as old Martin Luther, who polemically titled - against the Italians/Roman Catholics - a popular, anonymous, high medieval-era mystical work "The *German* Theology" - and it has been called this ever since). Thus, the book is true to its full title: this is the story of the competing legacies of Friedrich Nietzsche *in Germany*.

The Nazis do come in for treatment in the final quarter of the book; Aschheim notes the various ways in which they used a number of Nietzsche's themes while also, at the same time, found it necessary to explain away various statements in Nietzsche's writings that ran counter to their thought - especially his remarks about the stupidity of anti-Semitism. Within this hermeneutical conundrum emerged the Nazification of Nietzsche and their horrific usage of him against the Jews: by hating Christianity and seeing it as the product of Judaism, the Nazis claimed that they really were fulfilling Nietzsche's dreams of a world without the Church by first annihilating the Jews. Such logic - which only feels like a small stretch - causes one to wonder whether or not a text is not just the totality of its variations, but the totality of its readings as well. Can Nietzsche be blamed - at least in part - for the Holocaust?

But the book ends in cryptically Nietzschean mode, the man with his doppleganger, the light with its shadows: the question is unanswered. If any sense is to be made of it - a subtle sense, no doubt, nuanced and refined through repeated examinations - this is a fine place to start. The various types of Nietzscheanism discussed throughout the book are likely to leave many readers perplexed, for they could be as bewildering as they were socially and politically charged. But, speaking and writing are never neutral - and Nietzsche never intended to be, either.

Decision and indecision - the consequences for the developer
By Albrice
For those interested in decision theory, the author does a sterling job of tracing the impacts that different approaches to decision-making, by different parties, has on the development of a complex and unique mixed use project:
"But like it or not, the power to make these final decisions rested with the various public bodies overseeing the compliance with the city's regulations" (p.106) "It was that an architectural decision had been made by a political body that appeared to care little about archictecture..." (p.105) "Still undecided, however, was the shape of the atrium. This delay was having troubling consequences for the entire construction schedule because the city refused to issue a demolition permit until it saw the final design drawings..." "The developers knew they were unhappy with the atrium but they did not know why" (p.154) "They bungled it because they wouldn't do anything without having three decisions" (p.184) "The debate over the colour of glass dragged on for months" (p.202) "Mancini said he would take the matter under advisement. He was not ready to make a decision on the spot" (p.209) "While Johnson applauded group decisions intellectually, he felt strongly that there was not always a 'right' decision for every dilemma" (p.229")
The book clearly articulates the dialogue between the different decision-making parties and makes for an interesting case study.

Ideal case study for developers
By Wallace F. Smith
My students - this was, for years, the best-liked textbook in Berkeley real estate courses - saw this well-written history of an actual commercial development as a sure-fire hit movie. We selected the cast - not too difficult: incompetent and corrupt contractors, sublimely ignorant city officials, totally dense bankers, a brilliant artist who got ripped off, shady lawyers, venal professors - well, they lost forty million dollars or so. Reporter Frantz covered the (subsiding) ground with hearty humor but without serious libel. The reader is supposed to do the numbers.
