Siting Translation: History, Post-Structuralism, and the Colonial Context, by Tejaswini Niranjana

The act of translation, Tejaswini Niranjana maintains, is a political action. Niranjana draws on Benjamin, Derrida, and de Man to show that translation has long been a site for perpetuating the unequal power relations among peoples, races, and languages. The traditional view of translation underwritten by Western philosophy helped colonialism to construct the exotic "other" as unchanging and outside history, and thus easier both to appropriate and control.

Scholars, administrators, and missionaries in colonial India translated the colonized people's literature in order to extend the bounds of empire. Examining translations of Indian texts from the eighteenth century to the present, Niranjana urges post-colonial peoples to reconceive translation as a site for resistance and transformation.

"Siting Translation is a timely expression of certain intellectual dissatisfaction with the site of theory in academia today."--"Journal of Asian Studies

Mistrusting RefugeesFrom University of California Press

The twentieth century has seen people displaced on an unprecedented scale and has brought concerns about refugees into sharp focus. There are forty million refugees in the world—1 in 130 inhabitants of this planet. In this first interdisciplinary study of the issue, fifteen scholars from diverse fields focus on the worldwide disruption of "trust" as a sentiment, a concept, and an experience.

Contributors provide a rich array of essays that maintain a delicate balance between providing specific details of the refugee experience and exploring corresponding theories of trust and mistrust. Their subjects range widely across the globe, and include Palestinians, Cambodians, Tamils, and Mayan Indians of Guatemala. By examining what individuals experience when removed from their own culture, these essays reflect on individual identity and culture as a whole.

"The book is more about the individual circumstances of those who find themselves as refugees. Through their narratives we get a rich painful picture of what it means to be a refugee. The contributors have written with knowledge and commitment about the plight of refugees. This work cannot be recommended highly enough."--"Sage Race Relations Abstracts

Out of Eden: Essays on Modern Art, by W. S. Di Piero

Out of Eden presents the rigorous investigations and musings of a poet-essayist on the ways in which modern artists have confronted and transfigured the realist tradition of representation. Di Piero pursues his theme with an autobiographical force and immediacy. He fixes his attention on painters and photographers as disparate as Cezanne, Boccioni, Pollock, Warhol, Edward Weston, and Robert Frank. There is indeed a satisfying sweep to this collection: Matisse, Giacometti, Morandi, Bacon, the Tuscan Macchiaioli of the late nineteenth century, the Futurists of the early modern period, and the American pop painters.

Di Piero's analysis of modern images also probes the relation between new kinds of image making and transcendence. The author argues that Matisse and Giacometti, for example, continued to exercise the religious imagination even in a desacralized age. And because Di Piero believes that the visual arts and poetry live intimate, coordinate lives, his essays speak of the relation of poetry to forms in art.

"Concerned with the nature of the sacred in a time so resolutely profane, Di Piero offers a series of personal and evocative readings of paintings, photos, and sculptures that reflects not an academic bias or a rigid thesis, but a refreshing openness to the particularities of the artists' individual challenges and achievements."--"Virginia Quarterly Review

Death Without Weeping: The Violence of Everyday Life in Brazil, by Nancy Scheper-Hughes

When lives are dominated by hunger, what becomes of love? When assaulted by daily acts of violence and untimely death, what happens to trust? Set in the lands of Northeast Brazil, this is an account of the everyday experience of scarcity, sickness and death that centres on the lives of the women and children of a hillside "favela". Bringing her readers to the impoverished slopes above the modern plantation town of Bom Jesus de Mata, where she has worked on and off for 25 years, Nancy Scheper-Hughes follows three generations of shantytown women as they struggle to survive through hard work, cunning and triage. It is a story of class relations told at the most basic level of bodies, emotions, desires and needs. Most disturbing - and controversial - is her finding that mother love, as conventionally understood, is something of a bourgeois myth, a luxury for those who can reasonably expect, as these women cannot, that their infants will live.

From Publishers Weekly
In Brazil's shantytowns, poverty has transformed the meaning of mother love. The routineness with which young children die, argues University of California anthropologist Scheper-Hughes, causes many women to affect indifference to their offspring, even to neglect those infants presumed to be doomed or "wanting to die." Maternal love is delayed and attenuated, with dire consequences for infant survival, according to the author's two decades of fieldwork. Scheper-Hughes also maintains that the Catholic Church contributes to the indifference toward children's deaths by teaching fatalistic resignation and upholding its strictures against birth control and abortion. This important, shocking study resonates with the emotion of Oscar Lewis's ethnographic classics as it follows three generations of women in a plantation town. The compelling narrative investigates the everyday tactics of survival that people use to stay alive in a culture of institutionalized dependency ravaged by sickness, scarcity, feudal working conditions and death-squad "disappearances."

From Library Journal
This book by an anthropology professor from Berkeley, formerly a Peace Corps volunteer in northeast Brazil, is simply breathtaking. Its controversial theme--that mother love as conventionally understood is a luxury for those who can reasonably expect, as poor women in Brazil cannot, that their infants will live--is, in the best sense, illuminated by deconstructionist and feminist thought. The author's understanding of these lives on the edge is at times sympathetic, passionate, and sophisticated. But what makes the book as exciting to read as a good novel is her long-term interaction with a group of people that she clearly loves and the complete lack of the sense of the "other" that is so often found in anthropological writing. This work should have as much influence on studies of the relationship of women and children as did Margaret Mead's Growing Up in Samoa (1936) on the shaping of adolescence or Oscar Lewis's The Children of Sanchez (1961) on the cultural effects of poverty. Highly recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
A shattering portrayal of life among the impoverished inhabitants of Alto do Cruzeiro (``Hill of the Crucifixion''), a shantytown in the city of Bom Jesus da Mata in northeastern Brazil's Pernambuco Province. Scheper-Hughes (Anthropology/UC at Berkeley), whose 1979 Saints, Scholars, and Schizophrenics (not reviewed) won the Margaret Mead Award, has again produced a work of enormous power and importance. Alto do Cruzeiro is well named: Life in its fetid alleyways and smoke-filled mud-and-sheet-metal huts is a perpetual Golgotha where poverty, malnutrition, and terrorism make death and ``disappearances'' commonplace--and where, in 1987, the infant and child mortality rate reached more than 23 percent of total births. Scheper-Hughes, who first came to the area as a Peace Corps volunteer in the mid-1960's and who has returned again and again, focuses most of her attention on the women of the Alto. Bringing an unusual sensitivity to her research and couching her findings in prose that is at once subtle and precise, she urges ``a more `womanly' anthropology,'' one that engages ``questions of human relationships and ethics.'' The author explores the social, economic, political, and religious factors--the plantation system's exploitation of the workers; governmental corruption and indifference; superstition; the hidebound conservatism of the Roman Catholic hierarchy--that contribute to the inhumane conditions. In what is undoubtedly her most controversial conclusion, Scheper- Hughes contends that the uncertainty of existence within the ghetto community atrophies impoverished women's feelings of what is thought in more stable Western societies to be an inherent female trait--``mother love.'' The author makes a strong case for this finding, which undoubtedly will provoke heated discussion. A stimulating, consistently engrossing contribution to the scientific understanding of a complex and tragic situation. Not for the faint of heart
By Leonardo Alves
Scheper-Hughes's book is certainly the most impacting book I have read in months. I cannot call it entertaining but it is riveting in presenting a mind-boggling situation of abject poverty in Northeastern Brazil with its consequent infant and child mortality and impacts on the family structure.
Death Without Weeping is a very original, very relevant, and carefully written book although not perfect. The book is the result of extensive field research by Dr. Scheper-Hughes, Professor of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley but nevertheles very readable. I could understand and enjoy most of it without having had extensive training in Anthropology.
The author does a wonderful job in translating Alto do Cruzeiro reality into something the average American can understand. This "translation" certainly adds a bias but is still indispensable in my opinion. I consider that the author's religious beliefs strongly affected the outcome of the book and that I think could have been avoided.
I understand that the author has it's ethics and wouldn't reveal in the text the actual location name for Bom Jesus da Mata. I'm not tied by the same ethics so I can tell it: Bom Jesus da Mata is actually Timbauba, a 60,000 inhabitants town on the outskirts of Recife. The book subtitle, "The Violence of Everyday Life in Brazil" couldn't be worse. Timbauba is not Brazil. It has its own very specific problems and to read the book without understanding the great diversity among Brazil's regions would be very unfair to the country. Even in a local scale, Alto do Cruzeiro is not Timabuba and Timbauba is not Pernambuco. If you read the book don't rule out the possibility of going down to Brazil and having a wonderful time there. Tourism is a very good way of alleviating if not solving the problems presented in the book.
I have read now dozens of books written in English by the so-called Brazilianists who most of the times are not Brazilians themselves. Most of the books have the same problem of Death Without Weeping: there's a total sloppiness in spelling the Portuguese words. I can't believe UC Berkeley couldn't hire a Brazilian graduate student to proofread the originals. Moreover, the Geraldo Vandre quote on the very first page of the book, which gives the book its name was completely fabricated. Disparada is a great song and for writing songs such as "Disparada" and "Para Nao Dizer Que Nao Falei Das Flores", Geraldo Vandre was captured and tortured by the military dictatorship in Brazil. He was later released but severely braindamaged. However, the verses Scheper-Hughes quoted do not exist in "Disparada".
I was shocked to learn on the book's Epilogue who Seu Jacques, whom the book is dedicated to, was. But this suspense I'm not going to break.

Classic Modern Ethnography
By Sam Dennis
Scheper-Hughes not only crafts a thorough, complex ethnography, but she takes a risk by putting a piece of herself into it as well. Here is the introduction I wrote for a term paper about this book:

Anthropologist Nancy Scheper-Hughes covers rough territory in Death Without Weeping, an ethnography about sugar cane workers in Northeastern Brazil. In chapters eight and nine she discusses the concepts of maternity and infanticide in a manner that dissolves their seemingly diametric natures and exposes an enigma of conflict and confluence inherent in their layered reality. But how can we contrast our established notions of maternity and infanticide with Scheper-Hughes' statements about them in a context that is emically true to the population her research is based on? Some things about maternity might seem clear: positive maternity encompasses nurturance and doting love, while negative maternity suggests neglect and even murder; yet Scheper-Hughes brings into question commonly held notions about the biological necessities and cultural expectations of maternity that reveal contradictions, blind alleys, and misleading parochial assumptions. This ethnography about the sugarcane workers of the Alto do Cruzeiro slum in the town of Bom Jesus, Brazil causes us to re-evaluate our understanding of maternity in the face of established cultural and biological contexts, and invites a more detailed, elemental, philosophical gaze. The observations made in Death Without Weeping force us to retreat in search of a neutral ground free from the biases we may hold about `American' or `Brazilian' maternity, and abandon our fear of naivety by asking, what in fact is maternity, and what do we know about it?

A gripping book, a masterful ethnography.

Scheper-Hughes At Her Very Best
By carmelbooks
I have seen death without weeping. The destiny of the Northeast is death. Cattle they kill, But to the people they do something worse. --Geraldo Vandre, Disparada
"Death Without Weeping: Violence of Everyday Life in Brazil" is a brilliant anthropological and sociological depiction of life in the Nordeste region of Brazil. In Death Without Weeping, Scheper-Hughes carefully analyzes the Mother-Child relationship in a region of Brazil with the highest infant mortality rate in Latin America. Centered in the village of Alto do Cruziero, Scheper-Hughes continues to work with the community she had first joined as a Peace Corps volunteer decades before. Rekindling her relationship with the villagers and the land, she takes a new perspective to study the emotional and physical strain on a region where every life is touched with the pain of infant mortality. She examines the frightening reality of a place where mothers have absolutely no safety net and cannot protect their children from the disease, hunger, and destitute living conditions.
Scheper-Hughes further discusses the role of international corporations and their influence (usually negative) in the Nordeste region.
Death Without Weeping is absolutely brilliant. Scheper-Hughes is at her finest, and her work is impeccable. This is one of the finest works of sociology and anthropology I have read.

Drug War Politics: The Price of Denial, by Eva Bertram, Morris Blachman, Kenneth Sharpe, Peter Andreas

Why have our drug wars failed and how might we turn things around? Ask the authors of this hardhitting exposè of U.S. efforts to fight drug trafficking and abuse. In a bold analysis of a century's worth of policy failure, Drug War Politics turns on its head many familiar bromides about drug politics. It demonstrates how, instead of learning from our failures, we duplicate and reinforce them in the same flawed policies. The authors examine the "politics of denial" that has led to this catastrophic predicament and propose a basis for a realistic and desperately needed solution.

Domestic and foreign drug wars have consistently fallen short because they are based on a flawed model of force and punishment, the authors show. The failure of these misguided solutions has led to harsher get-tough policies, debilitating cycles of more force and punishment, and a drug problem that continues to escalate. On the foreign policy front, billions of dollars have been wasted, corruption has mushroomed, and human rights undermined in Latin America and across the globe. Yet cheap drugs still flow abundantly across our borders. At home, more money than ever is spent on law enforcement, and an unprecedented number of people—disproportionately minorities—are incarcerated. But drug abuse and addiction persist.

The authors outline the political struggles that help create and sustain the current punitive approach. They probe the workings of Washington politics, demonstrating how presidential and congressional "out-toughing" tactics create a logic of escalation while the criticisms and alternatives of reformers are sidelined or silenced.

Critical of both the punitive model and the legalization approach, Drug War Politics calls for a bold new public health approach, one that frames the drug problem as a public health—not a criminal—concern. The authors argue that only by situating drug issues in the context of our fundamental institutions—the family, neighborhoods, and schools—can we hope to provide viable treatment, prevention, and law enforcement. In its comprehensive investigation of our long, futile battle with drugs and its original argument for fundamental change, this book is essential for every concerned citizen.

Amazon.com Review
The use of illegal drugs should not be treated as a crime, but as a public health problem, argue Eva Bertram, Morris Blachman, Kenneth Sharpe, and Peter Andreas. Though the idea is hardly new, Drug War Politics revitalizes public debate over whether tax dollars are better spent suppressing drugs and pushers or rehabilitating addicts. Through interviews with health-care specialists, law enforcement officials, and drug users, the authors--who constitute a drug policy think-tank--illustrate that America's war on drugs must be revamped before it exacerbates the problem.

From Kirkus Reviews
A scholarly attack on America's drug policy. The authors of this tome, all public policy analysts or academics, study the history of the current war on drugs and conclude that it has been misguided from its inception. The question of drug use, they argue, is a public health issue, not the moral quandary that so many politicians claim it to be. Despite their doctoral-thesis-like approach, the authors make fascinating points about America's complex relationship with drugs: In the 1897 Sears Roebuck catalogue, for example, a kit containing syringes and a vial of morphine could be had for just $1.50. By 1914, laws were in place to control drug use. But these early laws did not prevent drug use; they merely restricted it to those who purchased it from a physician ``in good faith,'' and records were kept of all such transactions. This tolerance, however, had worn thin by the Nixon era, and it was at that time, the authors write, that America's real trouble with drugs began. From then on, America has pursued the zero-use goal typified by the ``Just Say No'' campaign. The costly Pyrrhic victory of the drug war has indeed lowered the number of drug users, but the authors note that only casual use has dropped; the number of intravenous drug and cocaine users, who are responsible for 80 percent of the costs associated with drug use, has skyrocketed. The authors conclude that the zero-use model is outdated and that the war on drugs should be refocused to a war on the roots of drug use--poverty, poor health education--and a change in our culture's heavy reliance on licit drugs to cure our ills. Compelling arguments and an excellent use of data make this report invaluable in an election year. (For two more studies of the drug wars, see Dan Baum, Smoke and Mirrors, p. 653, and Jill Jonnes, Hep-Cats, Narcs and Pipe Dreams, p. 728.) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. Our Nation's Drug War Nightmare
By David Thomson
This five year old book is regrettably as relevant as if put together yesterday. The authors deplore the use of mind altering drugs. Eva Bertram and her cohorts, however, are "troubled by a common pattern in public policy: the persistence of unworkable (criminal justice) policies in the face of overwhelming evidence of their failure...It seemed to be conventional wisdom that the reason force had not worked was not that enough had been applied and that the logical response, therefore, was escalation--not reevaluation."
The vice of political correctness is not limited those of a more Liberal temperament. William F. Buckley is cited as one of the few high profile conservatives willing to publicly challenge the Republican status quo. Politically powerful conservatives relish in "viciously attacking and demeaning critics and sidelining pragmatic alternatives. Less zealous conservatives and liberals, many of whom are skeptics or closet critics, have been willing to go along or have chosen to remain silent," add the authors. Democrats such as President Jimmy Carter attempted to redirect our efforts to treating mind altering drugs as primarily a medical problem. The ensuing tidal wave of public outrage severely threatened his political power. George W. Bush won the 1994 Texas Governors race in part by successfully attacking Texas Democrat Governor Ann Richards for the latter's "actively pushed diversion-to-treatment and in-prison treatment programs in the early 1990s."
The authors point out that our country has reversed its original relative indifference to the mind altering drugs of choice. Logically it is difficult to distinguish between the harm caused by alcohol, tobacco, marihuana, or cocaine. Heroin, many studies indicate, is far less damaging than alcohol. Another fly in the ointment is the problem of police corruption. Edgar J. Hoover was hesitant to involve the FBI for this very reason. "The logic of the drug war creates enormous pressures," the writers also reveal "to circumvent or transgress...constitutional rights." The Catch 22 circumstances of the drug wars "guarantee that poor and minority residents will be netted by the drug-enforcement system in highly disproportionate numbers." Police agencies prefer going after easier convictions to augment their overall numbers---amd if nothing else, people mired in poverty are easier to send to jail because they rarely obtain first class legal assistance. Is the drug war unwittingly racist? Would we persist with today's drug war if more establishment white people filled our jails? American citizens no longer have the right to ignore these awkward questions.
Bertram and her group suggest that it's time we take a serious look at decriminalization. They realistically concede that a social price will have to be paid. Alcohol abuse decreased during our nation's prohibition era. The numbers went back up sharply after legalization. Some individuals will inevitably experiment with legally sanctioned drugs. Nonetheless, life is often about trade offs, balancing off the good against the bad. Taking a chance on decriminalization is not a perfect solution, but likely the lesser of evils. I strongly recommend --Drug War Politics.-- You owe it to yourself to read it thoroughly. The price of denial is indeed too high.

It does not call for repeal, a terrible mistake.
By Bastiatlaw@aol.com
"Drug War Politics" is an informative work and a must-have for the freedom fighter. Unfortunately, like all other published works except for one, it does not call for the repeal of prohibition. This is a dreadful oversight and it shows just how institutionalized tyranny has become in America.
Calling for reform, legalization, harm reduction etc., simply concedes the "right" of government to prohibit. No such right exists because prohibition laws are repugnant to the spirit of our fundamental legal source: The Declaration of Independence.
I've studied and written volumes on this subject only to discover that the Establishment Curtain makes the Cold War Iron Curtain look like the sheerest of negligees.
If you want the WHOLE truth you must always follow the money trail to its very end. In the case of prohibition you will discover an ever-growing JUDICIAL INDUSTRY that "legally" preys on harmless humans and the taxpayers for $billions annually. This is the best kept secret in America.
There are but two types of crime. Force and Fraud. Self-medication is neither. Either this is a secret kept from America's legislators and judges or they have taken criminal license with our Constitution's Comerce Clause.
Folks, it's time to unshackle our grand juries by making them fully aware of their right to function independently and issue presentments.

The best book I have read on this topic
By A Customer
This book is much more than the title implys. While it is a through analysis of why the war on drugs is failing it is also visionary in its view of the future. The implications of the next "post drug war era" are explored with a focus on what this means for treatment, prevention and enforcement. Quite simply this book is a must read!

Tokyo Life, New York Dreams: Urban Japanese Visions of America, 1890-1924, by Mitziko Sawada

Tokyo Life, New York Dreams is a bicultural study focusing on Japanese immigrants in New York and the ideas they had about what they would find there. It is one of the first works to consider Japanese immigration to the East Coast, where immigrants were of a different class and social background from the laborers who came to the West Coast and Hawaii. Beginning with a portrait of immigrants' lives in New York City, Mitziko Sawada returns to Tokyo to examine the pre-immigration experience in depth, using rich sources of popular Japanese literature to trace the origins of immigrant perceptions of the U.S.

Along with discussions of economics and politics in Tokyo, Sawada explores the prevalent images, ideologies, social myths, and attitudes of late Meiji and Early Taisho Japan. Her lively narrative draws on guide books, magazines, success literature, and popular novels to illuminate the formation of ideas about work, class, gender relations, and freedom in American society. This study analyzes the Japanese construction of a mythic America, perceived as a homogeneous and exotic "other."

Amazing book describing Japanese Meiji era middle class males' obsession with New York turning to the reality of servitude.
By Amazon Customer
"Mitziko Sawada's transnational, cross-cultural migrant study reminds us how important a carefully researched historical analysis can be in generating new lines of thinking. This ground-breaking book offers many provocative insights and sensitive thumbnail portraits of a pioneer generation of hi-imin (elite non-immigrants or non-laborer visitors such as students, professionals, and merchants) Japanese men who came to New York City during the decades surrounding the turn of the twentieth century. By focusing on these striving Meiji-era Tokyojin (people from Tokyo) males smitten with tobei netsu (crossing-to-America fever), Sawada has made a significant contribution to bridging East Asian and Asian American history. At the same time, she has written a history resonant with post-1965 middle-class migrants.

"In this history, New York City is the imagined masculinized destination of personal, cultural, and political economic desire. Using a variety of Japanese language sources, especially success literature, novels, magazines, and guidebooks, Sawada contextualizes this New York fever within the Meiji patriarchal transformation of rural social relations into the Tokyo-centered, corporate hierarchies devoted to capitalist competition. New York became the romanticized promised land of various male escapes -- from limited educational access, individual conformity to the family and state, social inequities, strained gender roles, ad infinitum. The actual experience of living and working in New York City, of course, proved to be a rude awakening. Most men ended up working as servants, found little time to study, and encountered racism. Those who stayed constituted the beginnings of a small but important Japanese New Yorker community." John Kuo Wei Tchen; Journal of Asian American Studies 1.3 (1998) 311-315

The New Cold War? Religious Nationalism Confronts the Secular State (Comparative Studies in Religion and Society), by Mark Juergensmeyer

Will the religious confrontations with secular authorities around the world lead to a new Cold War? Mark Juergensmeyer paints a provocative picture of the new religious revolutionaries altering the political landscape in the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. Impassioned Muslim leaders in Egypt, Palestine, and Algeria, political rabbis in Israel, militant Sikhs in India, and triumphant Catholic clergy in Eastern Europe are all players in Juergensmeyer's study of the explosive growth of religious movements that decisively reject Western ideas of secular nationalism.

Juergensmeyer revises our notions of religious revolutions. Instead of viewing religious nationalists as wild-eyed, anti-American fanatics, he reveals them as modern activists pursuing a legitimate form of politics. He explores the positive role religion can play in the political life of modern nations, even while acknowledging some religious nationalists' proclivity to violence and disregard of Western notions of human rights. Finally, he situates the growth of religious nationalism in the context of the political malaise of the modern West. Noting that the synthesis of traditional religion and secular nationalism yields a religious version of the modern nation-state, Juergensmeyer claims that such a political entity could conceivably embrace democratic values and human rights.

From Kirkus Reviews
A sensitive survey of religious nationalism around the world, with some gentle advice for Americans bewildered by all the uproar. The aim of religious nationalists of every stripe--Buddhists in Mongolia, Muslims in Palestine, Sikhs in India--is invariably the same, says Juergensmeyer (Religion and Political Science/University of Hawaii): to dismantle the secular state, perceived as morally and spiritually bankrupt, and replace it with a government founded on religious principles. Juergensmeyer rejects calling this trend ``fundamentalist''--mostly because of the word's pejorative connotations--and instead labels it ``anti-modernist.'' Perhaps postmodernist would be more accurate, for the movement is growing by leaps and bounds. Instead of ``the emergence of mini-Americas all over the world,'' as anticipated just a generation go, the new world order seems to consist of various religious groups warring for theocratic states. The foremost example, of course, is Iran. But Juergensmeyer covers a number of other tinder spots, such as Egypt, where an Islamic revolution may be imminent; Israel, under pressure from the ultraright; India, where Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims clash with each other and the secular federal government; and Sri Lanka, where Buddhist extremists slaughter villagers and in turn are ruthlessly suppressed. Juergensmeyer outlines the threats (violence, destruction of human rights) and blessings (a restoration of morality to public office) of the phenomenon. He concludes that religious nationalism will continue to expand, urges cooperation rather than confrontation on the part of American policy-makers, and holds out the possibility of a happy synthesis in which ``essential elements of democracy will be conveyed in the vessels of new religious states.'' Valuable for its global perspective and its ability to see things from the viewpoint of the religious nationalists themselves; as such, must reading for the Clinton Administration. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
"Mark Juergensmeyer's "The New Cold War? makes the history and issues surrounding world-wide fundamentalism accessible to a general audience." --Mary Warner Marien, "Christian Science Monitor

From the Inside Flap
"This is an indispensable book in helping us understand the new world disorder that seems to be overtaking us. Juergensmeyer points out that much of the world neither understands nor finds attractive the idea of a 'secular state.' He helps us see that religious nationalism is a fact of life that will be with us for a long time to come. Deconstructing any simple notion of 'fundamentalism,' he shows us how it is possible to live with religious nationalism constructively without demonizing it. That is a major achievement."—Robert Bellah, co-author of Habits of the Heart

"This penetrating analysis of the relationship of religious movements to political developments demonstrates how new forms of nationalism, rooted in indigenous religious and cultural traditions, are challenging the western model of the secular state in the Middle East, South Asia, and Eastern Europe. Because there is, Juergensmeyer argues, no satisfactory compromise between the religious vision of the national state and that of liberal democracy, a new kind of cold war may develop, no less obstructive of a peaceful international order than the old. An important, and sobering, feature of Juergensmeyer's analysis is his constant awareness of the significance of 'the religious right' in the United States and other western democracies."—Ainslie T. Embree, Columbia University

"This is an outstanding study of an increasingly important subject. I find Juergensmeyer's concept of religious nationalism more useful in explaining the new worldwide religious resurgence than most concepts currently in use. The book is gracefully written and should be read by anyone interested in world affairs."—Ehud Sprinzak, Hebrew University, Jerusalem

Excellent Discussion!
By grey1066
Juergensmeyer is an authority on religious violence. This book presents his theory that religious nationalism, far from having died out as many people believd it would, is still a very potent force in world politics. He also details an excellent theory of violent religious groups seeing themselves as engaged in a "Cosmic War" of good against evil, which elevates their struggle from the merely poltical to the otherworldly. An exceptional book from a knowledgeable scholar.

The New Cold War?
By Daniel Pipes, Middle East Forum, Philadelphia
The New Cold War: Religious Nationalism Confronts the Secular State
Juergensmeyer, a sociologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, means by "religious nationalism" what others call fundamentalism; and, as his title suggests, he sees similarities between the old Marxism-Leninism challenge to the Western order and this new one. In both cases, the confrontation is "global in its scope, binary in its opposition, occasionally violent, and essentially a difference of ideologies." Of the many religious nationalisms, the Islamic one stands out by virtue of its extent and the depth of its hold.
While Juergensmeyer holds that secular Westerners underestimate this threat to their way of life, he also believes that "a grudging respect" might develop between the two sides over time. He then goes further and claims that "there may be some aspects of the religious nationalists' agenda that we cannot only live with but also admire." Key to our all getting along, he states is for secular Westerners to change our attitude and respect "at least some aspects of their positions."
In other words, Juergensmeyer first identifies the fundamentalists as the new enemy, then he goes on to propose at least a partial capitulation to them. In short, if fundamentalists present us with a new ideological battle, the academy is offering up the same old advice of appeasement.

Understandable
By LilyBelle
I recently took a higher level Sociology of Religion course and wrote my final on different interpretations of the Bible with the purpose of supporting someone's worldview. This book was very helpful and an easier read. It is not heavy like Durkheim and did not make me feel as if I needed a PhD in Sociology of Religion to understand it.

Review
"The strength of "The Government of Philip Augustus lies in its empirical and scholarly character. It makes few concessions to the current fashion for conceptualizing the study of medieval government by introducing doctrines derived from scholastic philosophy or legal abstraction. By concentrating on the concrete evidence of records, Baldwin seeks to discover how theoretical claims were translated into effective suzerainty."--Malcolm Vale, "Times Literary Supplement

This is an amazingly thorough description of the hover/administrative policies, and their evolution over the 35 years of the king's reign, of Philip Augustus. It is very well organized and the author has a brilliant knowledge and command of his sources. Perhaps the following criticism is unjust as the book is specifically entitled "The Government of Philip Augustus." However the king himself remains a very shadowy figure throughout. Some speculation about his personality and motivations and some conclusive summary of what he was like as a person would have been most welcome.

Perella's new translation and introductory essay capture the wit, irony, ambiguity, and social satire of the original nineteenth-century text, finally reclaiming Pinocchio for adult readers. Perella's translation is the first time the whole story has appeared in English. This bilingual edition also includes over 130 drawings by the original illustrator, Enrico Mazzanti.

Excellent format and translation
By Daniel J. Dupre
This edition stands perfectly well on its own in either language for simple enjoyment of the story and prose. It is also a useful learning resource for the intermediate to advanced student of the language. I suggest that you listen to Il Narratore audiolibro tape or CD while you read the text in Italian and then in English. The side by side page format is perfect for this technique. I am on my second iteration and I think I am actually learning. Do not let the 1883 date of original publication bother you. The language seems contemporary and the idioms are thoroughly footnoted. Be ready for a lot of passato remoto in the first and third person singular(this is after all a literary tense) and many very colorful verbs. Forget about Disney or any English language kids' editions. This is real literary fiction. The tranlator's opening essay provides social, linguistic and historical context if you're interested.

A Great Allegory for Children!
By A Customer
Since another reviewer has already stated why this edition/transation is the best one to buy, my review will focus on the story, which is a charming allegory for children, no matter what language is used to tell it.
Children identify with Pinocchio because of all his troubles. They understand what it is like to want to and mean to do well, only to fail miserably. They are also very capable of matching his extremes of emotion. Childhood is so full of humiliations that they don't think, "Oh, what an idiot not to have gotten it by now" or "He's overreacting terribly." (In fact, these are things said about _them_.) Instead, they cheer Pinocchio, who commits blunder after blunder--and is rewarded at the end of the book, for finally getting it right.
Also endearing are the puppet's "parents," old woodcarver Geppetto and the "fairy with blue hair." Despite their scapegrace's repeated failures, they forgive him again and again, giving him countless chances to redeem himself. As for the villains who prey on Pinocchio's naivete, they are perfect representations of what children find threatening. Some characters resemble playground bullies; others are more like the monsters under the bed. The talking animals are a little exasperating, but very nice.
"The Adventures of Pinocchio" is as whimsy as Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland": in both novels, anything goes. Unlike Carroll, however, Collodi injected moral lessons into the storyline. Pinocchio does not get into one humiliating episode after another just to amuse young readers; with every mistake he makes, he learns a moral lesson.
The plot structure is "poor"--which works to the book's advantage. This is what-happens-next kind of reading. Children care foremost about what new agonies a protagonist can propel himself into, and so will like the pace.
Accept no abridgements or adaptations. There are wonderful details that are often cut out for economy--or rewritten for somebody's idea of style. For the real Pinocchio, read this book.

Pinocchio
By Laretta
This is a wonderful edition of the everlasting story of Pinocchio. The book is a pleasant print on nice paper. It has the Italian text in front and the drawings of the original version of the story, that was published in short episodes in an Italian magazine.
The story has values for both, the multiple levels that you can read about Pinocchio's adventures (for example the symbolism, as you can find in other stories such as "Alice's adventures in wonderland") and the language and social meaning. Collodi originally did not intend to have the book published for children, it contains topics that reflect the man understanding of its human nature and of civilized life. For all these reasons Pincchio was adapted from Collodi, and later on many versions were made for children entertainment. Although this edition would probably appeal more a 12 years old than a younger infant, it remains a classic in literature history.
