California Rivers and Streams: The Conflict Between Fluvial Process and Land Use, by Jeffrey F. Mount

California Rivers and Streams provides a clear and informative overview of the physical and biological processes that shape California's rivers and watersheds. Jeffrey Mount introduces relevant basic principles of hydrology and geomorphology and applies them to an understanding of the differences in character of the state's many rivers. He then builds on this foundation by evaluating the impact on waterways of different land use practices—logging, mining, agriculture, flood control, urbanization, and water supply development.

Water may be one of California's most valuable resources, but it is far from being one we control. In spite of channels, levees, lines and dams, the state's rivers still frequently flood, with devastating results. Almost all the rivers in California are dammed or diverted; with the booming population, there will be pressure for more intervention.

Mount argues that Californians know little about how their rivers work and, more importantly, how and why land-use practices impact rivers. The forceful reconfiguration and redistribution of the rivers has already brought the state to a critical crossroads. California Rivers and Streams forces us to reevaluate our use of the state's rivers and offers a foundation for participating in the heated debates about their future.

In Pursuit of Justice: Reflections of a State Supreme Court Justice, by Joseph R. Grodin

As Justice William Brennan observes in his foreword, state courts are in some critical ways more important than federal courts in deciding controversies which affect the lives of ordinary citizens. Yet, outside of technical legal materials, little attention is paid to their role in shaping the law. Joseph R. Grodin seeks to fill this vacuum. A law professor and former justice of the California Supreme Court, Grodin was removed from the bench in 1986 along with Chief Justice Rose Bird and Justice Cruz Reynoso after a highly publicized campaign that focused on their decisions in death penalty cases. Drawing on his own experience, and in a lively style spiced with anecdotes and aimed at a general audience, Grodin writes about state appellate courts with insights that only a former justice could provide.

Grodin begins with a reflection on the perspective of the bench, addressing such questions as how judges view the arguments of lawyers and how appellate courts cope with an ever-increasing caseload. He describes his own elevation up the judicial ladder and points out significant aspects of the landscape along the way. In Part Two he discusses the judicial functions that are more or less distinctive to state courts, using case descriptions to illustrate the history and development of the common law, the significance of state constitutions for the protection of individual liberties, the special problems posed by enactment of laws through the initiative process, and the dilemmas surrounding the administration of the death penalty.

In Part Three he confronts a perennial and vastly important question—do judges make law? Grodin argues that in a sense they do, but only within a framework of constraints that make the process quite different from legislative lawmaking. Moreover, the nature of judicial lawmaking varies from context to context, and it has different dimensions in the state systems than in the federal. Finally, Grodin discusses the election process which is used in most states to decide upon selection or retention of judges. He argues that elections pose a threat to judicial independence, and he considers several alternatives to the current system. This engaging book offers a fascinating look at the courts and will appeal to anyone interested in how judges think about the law.

From Library Journal
Former California Supreme Court Justice Grodin provides an enlightening view of state judicial systems. He shows how state appellate courts affect people's daily lives and says these courts should increase their scrutiny of state constitutions in order to protect the individual. Grodin's personal experiences provide glimpses of judges' relationships among their peers and with government institutions. He criticizes other judges' extreme positions in applying legal rules and questions whether contested elections are a desirable means of judge selection. Grodin was removed from the bench in 1986 after a highly publicized campaign that focused on his decisions in death penalty cases.-- Ed. All citizens will enjoy Grodin's informative views on the judiciary. Highly recommended.

Review
"An engaging book. . . . A book that deserves study. . . . A good read. . . . Those who care about the governance of this state should read it more than casually." -- Robert Stevens, L. A. Times

"An unusually valuable variation on previous reflections by appellate judges. . . . The book succeeds in sketching the role, the work, and the political setting of an important, uniquely American institution . . . -- the federal courts." (Hans A. Linde, Harvard Law Review

"In Pursuit of Justice is Grodin's account of a brilliant career cut short by the last thing that is supposed to influence a judge's tenure -- partisan politics. It is a tale filled with intelligence, wit and, inevitably, a measure of sadness. . . . [A] valuable book." (Bill Blum, American Bar Association Journal

Dao De Jing: The Book of the Way, by Laozi, Moss Roberts, Laozi

Dao De Jing is one of the richest, most suggestive, and most popular works of philosophy and literature. Composed in China between the late sixth and the late fourth centuries b.c., its enigmatic verses have inspired artists, philosophers, poets, religious thinkers, and general readers down to our own times. This new translation, both revelatory and authentic, captures much of the beauty and nuance of the original work. In an extensive and accessible commentary to his translation, Moss Roberts reveals new depths of Dao De Jing.

This edition is distinguished by the literary quality of the translation, its new renderings for a number of the stanzas, and by Roberts's knowledgeable contextualizations. Utilizing recently discovered manuscripts and Chinese scholarship based on them, he is able to shed new light on the work's historical and philosophical contexts. This translation shows that Dao De Jing is far more than a work of personal inspiration; it is also a work of universal scope that makes penetrating comments on politics, statecraft, cosmology, aesthetics, and ethics. Roberts brings these themes to our attention, shows how they are integrated into the work as a whole, and demonstrates the relevance of these topics for our own times.

"This is a work of great creativity and impressive scholarship. Roberts has achieved a translation that replicates, as closely as possible, the literary merit of the original, its rhythms and its rhymes. He repeatedly brings to our attention fresh insights and interpretations that deserve careful consideration. He not only makes use of the Mawangdui manuscripts but, even more importantly, the recent Guodian finds, the latter opening a whole new page in Laozi studies." - Stephen Durrant, author of The Cloudy Mirror; "This new translation of the Dao De Jing is an exceptional literary effort." - John Major, author of Heaven and Earth in Early Han Thought "Moss Roberts provides a scholarly reading of the Dao De Jing so generous, so vivid, you can feel valley mist on your face and smell the straw dogs. Here are the furious warlords, craggy landscapes teeming with the ten thousand creatures of Taoist philosophy; China's careful arts of government and war; science, yoga, alchemy, erotics; old bamboo texts hidden in caves for millennia. This book is for anyone who has met Laozi's 'dark' mind and wants a closer look." - Andrew Schelling, author of The Cane Groves of Narmada River; "Reading Professor Moss Roberts's new translation of Dao De Jing gives one a sense of pleasure and surprise. He is a diligent and rigorous scholar, while at the same time possessing a poetic aculty to deeply penetrate the words and read between the lines.... His superior translation has deepened my own comprehension of this famous Chinese classic." - Fang Ping, former editor-in-chief, Shanghai Literary Translations Press

A "different" translation
By Ann Cartee
Contains extensive introductory information, including discussion of recent archeoligical discoveries, and interesting endnotes (although I prefer footnotes - less fumbling with pages).

However, I found this translation to be a bit difficult. One of the reviewers on the back of the book refers to it as "poetic" - well, maybe; mostly I found it a bit of a struggle to make sense of it, and had to read through it with several parallel translations to figure out what Roberts was translating. However, in that situation, read with several parallel translations, this translation provides an worthwhile "spin". I find Mair's translation much cleaner, simpler, and more comprehensible. The two together are nice.

I am a Daoist, so I find Laozi's Dao to be interesting. I think Meng Hao's Dao is interesting, too.

One of the best versions of the Tao.
By Inkhorn
I own about 10 different versions of the Tao Te Ching. Recently, I was in a bookstore, and browsed through several versions I had not read.

I put the others back, and purchased this one. Based on the Mawangdui and Guodi texts recovered from tombs in the mid 1970's, the graves were believed to date back to 170 BC, and the texts possibly to 300 BC. If so, this Moss Roberts version is from the oldest recorded texts available.

As you might appreciate portions of text were missing or in different order, and so he has reconciled them with the received text.

I find this particular version to be excellent, the author, a lecturer in Chinese, took a great deal of care in his research. His original use of language, being different from popular translations, conjures up different potential meanings and interpretations. He includes a valuable commentary which gives a context of the time and the text, which facilitates further understanding.

Here is a selection from Verse 1, so you can compare:

1 The Way as "way" bespeaks no common lasting Way.
2 The name as "name" no common lasting name.
3 Absent is the name for sky and land's first life,
4 Present for the mother of all ten thousand things.

He also clearly has a high level of intellectual understanding of being and negation, which i find useful.

In any event, if I was going to a desert island and allowed 3 versions of the Tao, I would definitely choose this one, not necessarily because it's the best, but because I have already read and gotten the inspiration from other versions, and I would be more likely to get fresh inpsiration from this one.

I love this version, and I think you will too.

I hope this review was helpful to you.

Listening in Paris: A Cultural History (Studies on the History of Society and Culture), by James H. Johnson

Beginning with the simple question, "Why did audiences grow silent?" Listening in Paris gives a spectator's-eye view of opera and concert life from the Old Regime to the Romantic era, describing the transformation in musical experience from social event to profound aesthetic encounter. James H. Johnson recreates the experience of audiences during these rich decades with brio and wit. Woven into the narrative is an analysis of the political, musical, and aesthetic factors that produced more engaged listening. Johnson shows the gradual pacification of audiences from loud and unruly listeners to the attentive public we know today.

Drawing from a wide range of sources—novels, memoirs, police files, personal correspondence, newspaper reviews, architectural plans, and the like—Johnson brings the performances to life: the hubbub of eighteenth-century opera, the exuberance of Revolutionary audiences, Napoleon's musical authoritarianism, the bourgeoisie's polite consideration. He singles out the music of Gluck, Haydn, Rossini, and Beethoven as especially important in forging new ways of hearing. This book's theoretical edge will appeal to cultural and intellectual historians in many fields and periods.

"A helpful survey of both enduring and emerging themes."--"Religious Studies Review

From the Back Cover
This book grew from a simple question. Why did French audiences become silent? Eighteenth-century travelers' accounts of the Paris Opera and memoirs of concertgoers describe a busy, preoccupied public, at times loud and at others merely sociable, but seldom deeply attentive.

Music History and More
By A Customer
This is a fascinating account of musical life in Paris between 1750 and 1850. Although Johnson is trying to discover why opera audiences became silent during this period, he has a lot more than just silence on his mind. The book explores the decline of aristocratic control over music and its take-over by bourgeois audiences; it also traces how music moved from being a cerebral experience to an emotional one. Johnson writes extremely well, and knows how to pick appropriate and witty anecdotes to keep the text moving along. This is one of the few books that both academic scholars and ordinary readers should be able to appreciate and enjoy; it is easily one of the best books on music history to come along in years, and fun to read as well.

All-Around Excellent Book
By Arthur Chandler
The overwhelming majority of books about classical music deal primarily with the composers' lives and/or the nature of their music. This book concentrates on the audiences: their changing expectations, evolution of concert settings and social conventions , and many more considerations that have helped define how audiences today approach live music performances.

I agree with all the previous reviewer 's comments. I read the book in its paperback form, but I'm buying now for my Kindle reader so that I can easily copy quotations to send to friends for discussion.

The focus of Fernand Braudel's great work is the Mediterranean world in the second half of the sixteenth century, but Braudel ranges back in history to the world of Odysseus and forward to our time, moving out from the Mediterranean area to the New World and other destinations of Mediterranean traders. Braudel's scope embraces the natural world and material life, economics, demography, politics, and diplomacy.

Epic
By Just A Girl
Overall, the two volumes are completely engrossing, painstakingly researched and absolutely epic in scope.

Volume I may be a little much for the non-scholar/non-historian with the geographical and agricultural history of the Mediterranean. Braudel's work is detailed, thorough and touches every aspect of life (sheep pasturing, currency exchange, wheat prices by year). The copious footnotes reference primary sources and make for interesting reading in their own right. In this volume, Braudel sets down the foundation which volume II is built upon. Once cannot understand the impact of actions without knowing the history that drove the decisions.

Note: Many footnotes remain in the original Spanish or Italian.

Volume II, however, concentrates on Philip II's Spain and makes for engrossing reading. We see the Mediterranean World (and the "North Countries") through Spanish eyes. Her wars, diplomacy, failed policies, visionaries, religious convictions and economy are all covered in minute detail again with the same first-hand accounts referenced via footnotes.

I really can't do a credit to the breadth and depth of Braudel's work in this review. As an "armchair" history lover, I found this absolutely fascinating (and a bit intimidating at first pass). There can be some "dry" parts (the endless diplomatic dispatches and court speculation) but this is just minor quibbling from an amateur.

To see the various empires, wars and policies from a Spanish viewpoint was eye-opening. I found Braudel to be quite even-handed regarding the Spanish Empire and I have a new understanding of Philip's policies and his possible motivations.

In short, this is an exceedingly detailed, copiously noted expansive history of the Mediterranean during the reign of Philip II with excellent primary sources quoted.

Original in its approach, unsurpassed in its comprehensiveness, but somewhat dated in its details
By D. Cloyce Smith
First published in its complete form in 1949, then extensively revised in 1966 before being translated into English in 1972, Braudel's massive socio-economic history is, I can confidently assert, more often used today as a reference or cited for its information than read cover to cover. It's a daunting task: 1,300 tightly typeset pages that hold an encyclopedic mass of data, and it took me nearly a year to wing my way through it, dipping into it a couple of sections at a time, which is probably the only way for the nonspecialist to do it justice.

Braudel subverts the traditions of narrative events-focused history by examining everyday life in the civilizations surrounding (and traversing) the Mediterranean Sea. The boundaries of the Mediterranean are varied and flexible: the "conventional" borders drawn by the geographer stretch from "the northern limit of the olive tree to the northern limit of the palm tree," the geologist regards the region as "a long belt stretching from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean," but for Braudel it is more than the sum of these views: the Mediterranean is really a boundless region centered on a sea "whose light grows less as one moves away from it." Keeping this view in mind, Braudel expands his research to include far-away regions that impact the Mediterranean while never losing his focus on the interactions between the principal players; Spain, France, the Italian city-states and the Papacy, the Ottoman Empire and the Levant, and North Africa, as well as the islands whose destinies are often determined by the struggles among their continental neighbors.

This first volume includes all of Part One ("The Role of the Environment"), which examines regional geography (mountains, plains, coasts), climate, navigation and travel, and differences between urban and rural settings, and I found this examination both readable and absorbing. The first half of Part Two ("Collective Destinies and General Trends") focuses on economics: from general factors such as population commerce to mundane matters such as price fluctuations and coinage, the pepper and spice trade, grain imports and exports, and the use of ships for transport. Some of this stuff is pretty fascinating (especially the section on American silver), but even the most caffeinated readers can become hypnotized by the steady accumulation of data whose randomness is necessitated by whatever sources might have survived or been available to the author at the time.

More often than not Braudel points out areas that need further investigation, much of which has been carried out in the intervening decades by legions of economic historians. As a result, Braudel's history is a victim of its own success, and is read less and less largely because his influence has so completely permeated the field that more current, more accurate, more readable volumes exist covering this area and era--although no work on the late sixteenth century has dared to be as wide-reaching (and utterly overwhelming).

A Well Balanced & Detailed Account Of A Fascinating Era.
By SUPPORT THE ASPCA.
This book is a very detailed starting point for fans of both the Renaissance & Capitalism. It was originally published in French in 1949. The book has eleven illustrations & fifty four lists of figures & is 643 pages long.It is divided into two huge parts with several chapters & sub chapters in each.

Exs: Part 1, "The Role Of The Environment."
Chapter1-The Peninsulas: Mountains, Plateaux, & Plains.
Chapter2-The Heart Of The Mediterranean: Seas & Coasts.
Chapter3-Boundaries: The Greater Mediterranean.
Chapter4-The Mediterranean As A Physical Unit: Climate & History.
Chapter5-The Mediterranean As A Human Unit: Communications & Cities.
Part2, "Collective Destinies & General Trends."
Chapter1-Economies: The Measures Of The Century.
Chapter2-Economies: Precious Metals, Money, & Prices.
Chapter3-Economies: Trade & Transport.
Chapter4-Trade & Transport: The Sailing Ships Of The Atlantic.

At its heart this is a socio-economic history of the second half of
the sixteenth century Mediterranean world that we owe so much too.
The authors depth & breadth of knowledge can be overwhelming at times, but never dull. The clever inclusion of the often ignored topics like climate and geographic conditions presuasively explained why prosperous Capitalism grew in some regions while others remained stagnant.
Chapter 5-"The Human Unit" was the most informative. Most facets of history are here for the reader to absorb. This is the type of book we all wished we had in school.

On Heidegger's Nazism and Philosophy, by Tom Rockmore

That Martin Heidegger supported National Socialism has long been common knowledge. Yet the relation between his philosophy and political commitments remains highly contentious and recently has erupted into a vociferous debate. Boldly refuting arguments that the philosopher's political stance was accidental or adopted under coercion, Rockmore argues that Heidegger's philosophical thought and his Nazism are inseparably intertwined, that he turned to National Socialism on the basis of his philosophy, and that his later evolution is largely determined by his continuing concern with Nazism.

After developing a framework that clearly outlines the interrelation of Nazism and Heidegger's philosophy, Rockmore analyzes the famous rectoral address the philosopher delivered in 1933 upon becoming rector of the University of Freiburg. In that speech Heidegger sought to ground politics in philosophy. Rockmore examines the inseparable relation of politics and philosophy in Heidegger's Being and Time, the recently published Contributions to Philosophy (written from 1936 to 1938), and the interpretations of Hölderlin, Nietzsche, and technology.

In his conclusion Rockmore considers the ongoing discussion of Heidegger's thought and Nazism in France. Combining extensive documentation of the Heidegger controversy with philosophical and historical analysis, this book raises profound questions about the social and political responsibility of philosophy.

Provocative Criticism of Heidegger
By R. Albin
This well written and closely argued book is a stringent criticism of Heidegger's philosophy and its relation to his notorious embrace of Nazism. Rockmore argues that Heidegger's involvement with the Nazis was hardly the result of personal quirks or coercion but rather a product of his philosophical preoccupations. Rockmore bases his conclusions on a careful reading of the relevant texts, analysis of the main features of Heidegger's thought, and relevant historical background. For example, while Heidegger liked to present his thought as a recovery of the insights of pre-Socratic Greek thinkers, Rockmore shows that Heidegger was influenced by the racist and anti-rationalist Volkish ideologies prevalent in Germany. Rockmore's case is well argued and others, notably Heidegger's recent biographer, Rudiger Safranski, reach identical conclusions. It is clear as well that Heidegger abandoned overt Nazism not because of any real ethical concerns but rather because the Nazis would not accomodate Heidegger's ideas for how German society and education should be run. This book also contains damning criticism of the individuals who have defended Heidegger; including members of Heidegger's family who have apparently restricted access to potentially damaging documents; Heidegger's disciples, some of whom have attempted remarkable ways to explain away Heidegger's Nazism; and a number of other philosophers who seem to be unable to stomach the fact that the person they trumpet as the great thinker of the 20th century was a Nazi. Heidegger emerges as a brilliant and remarkably egotistical man inhumanly dedicated to the pursuit of a small set of ideas, some of which may be great insights, but literally careless of human rights, human dignity, and the physical suffering of the great majority of humanity. One criticism of Rockmore's book is that Rockmore, though usually very careful with terminology, is sloppy about use of the term Nazi. Rockmore argues that Heidegger, after his withdrawal from overt Nazism, remained dedicated to an "ideal Nazism". It would be better to restrict the use of term Nazism to the actual acts and (often contradictory) programs of the Nazis. As Rockmore shows clearly, Heidegger was preoccupied throughout his life with ideas that were anti-humanist, anti-democratic, and Volkish in character. This puts Heidegger in the same general category as the Nazis but referring to "ideal Nazism" is a bit confusing.

A revolutionary new approach to 20th century philosophy
By Paul Trejo
Tom Rockmore has radically overturned 20th century philosophy models by challenging Martin Heidegger head-on.
Most famous writers of 20th century philosophy imitate Heidegger's terms, 'in-the-world,' and 'them' and other aspects of his existentialism. Heidegger's Nazi affiliations are most often swept under the rug and even today many of his writings are kept secret by his Estate.
Tom Rockmore courageously joins the battle to expose Heidegger as a Nazi thinker -- and not as an unwilling Nazi participant as his followers like to soft-soap these issues. But Dr. Rockmore is not seeking sensationalism or merely political battles, rather, he is an erudite philosopher himself with some penetrating insights into the origins and weaknesses of Heidegger's positions on the issues.
The 20th century is filled with defenses of Heidegger the man and the writer. His nakedness is praised as beautiful attire by some of the key writers of the past century. Tom Rockmore has performed a revolutionary act by exposing this nakedness and hypocrisy, not only politically but in the realm of theory.
This is one of the most interesting books available on 20th century philosophy.

The Unchanging American Voter, by Eric R. A. N. Smith

Have the American people grown more politically sophisticated in the past three decades, or do they remain relatively ignorant of the political world? Did a "great leap forward" take place during the 1960s in which our citizenry became involved and adept voters? In this important book, Eric Smith addresses these and other provocative questions that have long befuddled political scientists and policymakers.

Much of the current wisdom about American voters derives from an argument advanced in a volume entitled The Changing American Voter, written by Nie, Verba, and Petrocik. In this work, the authors contend that the electorate made a "great leap forward" in political sophistication and ideological thinking between the 1960 and 1964 elections. They argue that people changed in response to a shifting environment, and that, in particular, the surge of protest and ideological rhetoric between 1960 and 1964 engendered a new political savvy and sophistication. In their view, people learned to understand politics better, to relate the issues to the candidates more accurately, and to cast more informed, intelligent votes.

In The Unchanging American Voter, Smith takes issue with this portrait of an engaged American citizenry and replaces it with a quite different picture of the voters of this nation. He posits a more bleak political landscape in which the typical voter knows little about politics, is not interested in the political arena and consequently does not participate in it, and is even unable to organize his or her attitudes in a coherent manner. To support this view, Smith demonstrates how the indices by which Nie, Verba, and Petrocik measured levels of sophistication during the 1960s were methodologically flawed and how a closer examination of supposed changes reveals only superficial and unimportant shifts in the ways voters have approached the ballot box since the 1950s.

The Unchanging American Voter is an intelligent and original work that provides a new perspective of the American citizenry. It is sure to engender discussion and debate about the dynamics of voting in postwar America.

Material Girls: Making Sense of Feminist Cultural Theory, by Suzanna Danuta Walters

Madonna, Murphy Brown, Thelma and Louise: These much-discussed media icons are the starting points of Suzanna Walter's brilliant, much-needed introduction to feminist cultural theory. Accessible yet theoretically sophisticated, up-to-date and entertaining, Material Girls acquaints readers with the major theories, debates, and concepts in this new and exciting field.

With numerous case studies and illustrations, Walters situates feminist cultural theory against the background of the women's movement and media studies. Using examples from film, television, advertising, and popular discourse, she looks at topics such as the "male gaze," narrative theory, and new work on female "ways of seeing" and spectatorship. Throughout, Walters provides a historically grounded account of representations of women in popular culture while critiquing the dominance of psychoanalytic and postmodern analyses.

The first comprehensive guide to the approaches and debates that make up this growing field, Material Girls belongs on the shelf of every cultural critic and savvy student today.

Wordy, but some interesting ideas
By Mel Woods
I've included some quotes from each section in order to give you a feel for the book. The book is very wordy and the author often lets others speak for her throughout the book. Its interesting, but wasn't the best book I've read on feminist studies.

In the introduction the book claims that "The goal, rather, is threefold: to critically introduce readers to the main concepts and theoretical frameworks of feminist cultural criticism; to place these concepts and frameworks in the historical context that produced them; and, finally, to present a model of feminist cultural criticism that at once intertextual, multidisciplinary, and deeply invested in the demystification of patriarchal images and the construction of feminist ones." (25)

The first chapter (From Images of Women to Woman as Image) looks at the stereotypes involved in the image of what is woman.

"...most stereotypes are not neutral; they are deeply embedded in structures of oppression and domination and become prescriptions for behavior and modes of social control." (43)

"...that the entire cultural notion of "woman" is itself constructed in and through images rather than somehow "residing" in the images themselves-"woman" is constructed as "a set of meanings which then enter cultural and economic circulation on their own account."" (48)

The second chapter ( Visual Pressures) looks at the voyeuristic and fetishism of women's image.

"...claimed that the objectification of women was not an "added on" attraction, but rather endemic to the very structure of image making." (53)

"The fragmentation of the female body into parts that should "improved" or "worked on" often results in women having self-hating relationships with their bodies." (56)

"...male dominance means that not only do men as a gender have the institutional...power to control the actual production of culture and cultural images..., but they also have the ideological power to control the form and content of the images themselves." (66)

The third chapter (Positioning Women) looks at the narrative in which women are placed.

"..masculine agent often has the same knowledge that we, the audience, do; it is from his point of view, and rarely the woman's, that the story is oriented." (71)

"Feminist film critics argue that it is precisely this narrative inconsistency that we should seek out-to elaborate and make visible the cracks in the supposedly air-tight case that is male-dominated imagery." (75)

"It is not surprising that genres associated both with a female audience and with "feminine" subject matters...should be found unworthy of critical attention by male cultural critics.."(79-80)

In the fourth chapter (You Looking at Me?) the author looks more closely at the female spectator.

"Because the analyst's desire was somehow to construct a knowledge of the 'other'- or more precisely the other's knowledge- a resort to anthropological or sociological methodologies seemed inevitable." (98-99)

"We [women] resist, reinterpret, willfully read against the grain, and reinscribe dominant meanings with our own subversive interpretations." (111)

In the fifth chapter (Post-feminism and Popular Culture) the author looks at the backlash against the feminist movement.

"In addition, this backlash is more clearly antifeminist: it responds directly to the women's movement and often pits one woman against the other (Fatal Attraction, Working Girl, The Hand the Rocks the Cradle)." (139)

In the sixth chapter (Material Girls) is the concluding chapter of the book.

"For if the image so often mystifies and degrades us, out criticism of that same image should not-must not- participate in further mystification." (150)

"..up until now, cultural critics have been content to read a text; the point, however, is to write a new one." (152)

This book does not live up to its title of "Making Sense"
By munchkins
Walters becomes very wordy in her second chapter and continues throught the entire book this way. She has several interesting chapters in which she gives critical interpretations of popular films and television shows, however, they fail to make up for the dullness of the entire book. She is overly critical of previous methods of feminist criticism, while at the same time almost cocky about her own superior viewpoint. In the end, she never actually has a viewpoint of her own, except that someone else should pick up the ball and develop a new feminist methodology. Her wordiness seemed to be nothing more than a cover for a lack of original thought. This book is definately not for the new student of feminism or for the skeptic. There are many other enlightening books on the subject. Unfortunately this is not one of them and it would be terrible for the book to turn off any more people to the subject as it did myself.
