Sexual Politics: Judy Chicago's Dinner Party in Feminist Art HistoryFrom University of California Press

In April 1996 Judy Chicago's controversial 1979 work, "The Dinner Party", will make its first appearance in Los Angeles. The reemergence of this piece, which has been in storage since 1988, signals a renewed interest in a cultural monument that has vexed historians and critics of contemporary art for nearly twenty years. A monumental table in the form of an equilateral triangle, "The Dinner Party" honours 1,038 women in Western history, 39 of whom are represented at the table itself by elaborate needlepoint runners and ceramic plates decorated with centralised, often vulgar motifs. When the piece was shown at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1979, it drew the largest audience in that museum's history. It also engendered vehement negative responses, leading several other venues to cancel the exhibition. "Sexual Politics" places "The Dinner Party" alongside other important feminist works, from Louise Bourgeois's "Femme Maison" series of the mid-1940s to Judie Bamber's paintings of female genitalia (1994). The essays in this collection, accompanied by over 150 illustrations, provide a major re-evaluation of the feminist art movement. Segments from original interviews with feminists such as Lucy Lippard, Suzanne Lacy, Arlene Raven, and Miriam Schapiro are included, along with a timeline that traces the feminist art movement in relation to other cultural and historical events. For years "The Dinner Party" has revealed deep divisions both inside and outside the feminist movement. "Sexual Politics" raises fundamental questions about those divisions, and about what is at stake in the politics of identity in the 1990s.

From Library Journal
Completing a trilogy begun with Chicago's recent Beyond the Flower and The Dinner Party (both LJ 6/96), this volume is the actual catalog of the reappearance of Chicago's peripatetic icon of feminist art. But "The Dinner Party" is only one of about 100 other feminist artworks, created by 55 women artists, that were put on display at the Armand Hammar Museum to bring 1970s feminist art into perspective and even to document "the visibility of the vagina in women's art of the 1990s." Only a few portions of this engrossing study seem a bit more prurient than necessary. Chicago herself is not a contributor, but there is much discussion of her reputation, career, and various works. Among the seven mostly academic essays, much is added by A. Kubitza's "Rereading the Readings of 'The Dinner Party' in Europe" and L. Cottingham's "Eating from 'The Dinner Party' Plates and Other Myths, Metaphors, and Moments of Lesbian Enunciation in Feminism and Its Art Movement." Well recommended for serious collections on feminism.?Mary Hamel-Schwulst, Towson State Univ., Md.

The Wars We Took to Vietnam: Cultural Conflict and Storytelling, by Milton J. Bates

What Americans refer to as the Vietnam War embraces much more than the conflict with North Vietnam. Milton J. Bates considers the other conflicts that Americans brought to that war: the divisions stemming from differences in race, class, sex, generation, and frontier ideology. In exploring the rich vein of writing and film that emerged from the Vietnam War era, he strikingly illuminates how these stories reflect American social crises of the period.

Some material examined here is familiar, including the work of Michael Herr, Tim O'Brien, Philip Caputo, Susan Sontag, Francis Ford Coppola, and Oliver Stone. Other material is less well known—Neverlight by Donald Pfarrer and De Mojo Blues by A. R. Flowers, for example. Bates also draws upon an impressive range of secondary readings, from Freud and Marx to Geertz and Jameson.

As the products of a culture in conflict, Vietnam memoirs, novels, films, plays, and poems embody a range of political perspectives, not only in their content but also in their structure and rhetoric. In his final chapter Bates outlines a "politico-poetics" of the war story as a genre. Here he gives special attention to our motives—from the deeply personal to the broadly cultural—for telling war stories.

Prints and Printmaking: An Introduction to the History and Techniques, by Antony Griffiths

A print is a pictorial image that has been produced by a process that enables it to be multiplied, and many of the best-known works by some of the world's greatest artists are prints. Yet little is understood about this popular art form. Now Antony Griffiths provides an excellent introduction for anyone who wishes to acquire a basic understanding of prints and printmaking. In succinct and lucid language, he explains the different printmaking techniques and shows both details and whole prints to demonstrate the effects that can be achieved. Woodcuts, engraving, etching, mezzotint, and lithography are among the many processes explained, illustrated, and placed within a historical context.

This fully revised and updated edition of the highly praised 1980 British publication is available for the first time in the United States. With its complete glossary, index, and helpful illustrations, Griffiths's book is the essential foundation for an intelligent appreciation of the printmaker's art.

From Library Journal
In this second edition of a book first published in 1980, Griffiths, a specialist in the Department of Prints and Drawing at the British Museum, claims to have corrected errors in the first edition and to have updated the well-organized bibliography. The book makes the modest claim of being an introductory text that touches on the basics of various printmaking techniques and briefly describes the history of each. It is strongest in the area of history, and a great deal of information is systematically presented in a relatively short space. The illustrations, all taken from the collections of the British Museum, are well chosen and beautifully reproduced. As with many books of this nature, the reader will wish for illustrations of all of the works mentioned, but this title makes no claim to be comprehensive, and the excellent bibliography will lead interested readers further. An excellent choice as a main or supplemental course text, it will serve any library as a basic overview of the subject.?Mark Woodhouse, Elmira Coll. Lib., N.Y.

Great introductory reference
By wiredweird
If you've just started your love affair with fine prints, you're sure to want a better understanding of just what this thing is and how its unique character came about. Griffiths's book would work well as your first guide to the technique and history of printmaking.

The tour starts with the major categories of technique (relief, intaglio, litho, and silkscreen), then discusses the extensions needed for printing in multiple colors, followed by a summary of photo processes applicable to each technique. This isn't a how-to for the aspiring printmaker or an academically meticulous history. Instead, it's just enough to let the new printlover know what the words mean and what the differences are, along with a sketch of the major who and when in printmaking innovation. I fault it only for under-representing the incredible art and technique of the Japanese woodcut masters.

Illustrations abound, demonstrating nearly every point that Griffiths brings up. The bibliography by itself is worth attention - it not only lists sources of information, it categorizes them by areas of interest and adds other comments about each one. Very few bibliographies in any field offer that kind of help to the reader. And, as the beginner might hope, it ends with a list of common abbreviations and a strong glossary. This book is a great way to introduce new printlovers to the object their of affection.

What is printmaking?
By andrea tavares
Have you ever tried to explain to an art student what is printmaking? Better. Have you ever tried to explain to an art student why it's still important? You can try to do a very long speech about how it was and still is important for artists. You can say that print was for an artist like Rembrant a way of thinking. And you could even explain how the techniques used by the artists were connected with their subjects. But you can't only talk you must show some pictures. That is exactaly what this book does. The autor was very sucesfully in showing us the value of printmaking since the "unknow masters" to our century. He can explain without being boring how etchings were doing and I believe he could do so because the pictures were sharpily choosen. Without doubt no art teatcher can miss these piece. And it's essential to any print lover.

From Publishers Weekly
The silent movies most known by film-goers paint a charming picture of a relaxed, innocent bygone America. Yet documentary filmmaker Brownlow has unearthed hundreds of forgotten silents that realistically delved into social and political issues: police corruption, white slave rackets, racial tensions, slum conditions, strikes, divorce, venereal disease. Many of these silents took a progressive standpoint softened by melodramatic devices; there were also racist films, Red Scare films, prejudiced caricatures of immigrant groups. By the 1920s, conservatism set in, censorship was widespread, the "star system" was in full swing and the socially conscious silents vanished. Brownlow's spellbinding canvas is peopled with the likes of D. W. Griffith, Margaret Sanger, Henry Ford, Upton Sinclair, temperance firebrand Carry Nation. Packed with 250 photographs, this volume caps a trilogy begun with The Parade's Gone By and The War, the West, and the Wilderness.

From Library Journal
Brownlow is the preeminent historian of the silent film era, and this volume completes his trilogy, which includes The Parade's Gone By (Univ. of California , 1976) and The War, The West, and the Wilderness ( LJ 11/15/78). The title refers to the popular conception that silent films were strictly escapist entertainment, when in fact hundreds dealt with the social issues of their day. Brownlow organizes his study by subject--Matters of Sex, Prohibition, Crime, Women's Suffrage, and, the best chapter, Foreigners, which deals with the images of immigrant groups. This work's value cannot be underestimated, especially because the au thor has tracked down descriptions of scores of "lost" films and interviewed dozens of participants who have since died. A handsome volume, essential for informed laypersons.

Review
"Brownlow . . . has devoted the last twenty years to brushing away some rapidly accumulating cobwebs. . . . His book . . . enlightens; it shakes preconceptions; it adds fascinating colors to a fabric assumed to be more or less monochrome." -- Stanley Kauffmann, The New Republic

"Brownlow's . . . excitement at how much these lost films tell us about how cities looked and how people dressed is utterly contagious." -- Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer

"Recreates a major aspect of mass culture during the first third of the century -- precisely when mass culture was being transformed by innovations in technology." (Michael Kammen, New York Times Book Review

The Lost Picture Shows
By Acute Observer
Kevin Brownlow is a film historian who wrote other books. This tells about the silent films produced in the early 20th century that dealt with the problems of the times. These were: crime, poverty, drugs, alcohol, racial and ethnic prejudices, epidemics, sexual mores, police and government corruption, prison conditions, immigration, and labor struggles. Then the Hays Office began the national censorship of Hollywood films. Many believe that early 20th century American life was serene but the truth was far different as recorded by the silent films and uncensored history. This book attempts to set the record straight from the films of that era (p.xv). That is like reconstructing current society from the films shown on TV and in the theatres. [Does that work for you?] The 600 pages have a wealth of detail on films few have ever seen. Then as now, films were "ripped from the headlines" to meet the interest of their customers.

Films appealed to workers who were often illiterate. Their realistic stories brought condemnation from the wealthy but neither prevented or caused revolution. Movies with a message of education weren't popular but entertainment was. [Still true today?] Progressives sought to control the working class (p.xviii). Can "science and technology" solve the political problems of society? The political repression of the 1920s ended social films (p.xix). Prohibition was part of that (p.xxi). Brownlow wrote about these films because hardly anything has been written about the silent social films (p.xxv). This is a richly detailed book that covers a range of topics usually avoided in academic histories. It will educate you about life in the early 20th century as shown on screen.

Chapter 1 discusses "Censorship": the National Board of Review, State and Municipal Censorship, Will Hays. Films could erode the lower classes' faith in authority (p.4). Censors were composed of wives of the wealthy (p.5). Were there attacks on free speech (p.10)? The US Supreme Court ruled in 1915 that the First Amendment did not apply! This was overturned in 1952, and shows the arbitrary judgment of the Court. Chicago the city with the strictest censorship had the highest crime rate. Firearms were forbidden on the screen (p.12). Chicago banned the 1932 film "Scarface". Will Hays banned "too provocative" scripts and anything political (p.17). The rules were not water-tight (p.20). But it influenced American films (p.23).

Chapter 2 discusses "Matters of Sex" in 67 pages. Many surviving films have been heavily censored (p.26). These topics are more heavily censored today (Social Disease, White Slave films). Chapter 3 warned about drug addiction. Chapter 4 is on "Prohibition". Movie theatres competed with saloons for entertainment (p.123). Chapter 5 is about "Crime" (70 pages). Chapter 6 tells about "Political Corruption", Chapter 7 about "Women's Suffrage". Chapter 8 is on "Prisons". Chapter 9 is on "Poverty". Aren't these topics censored today? Chapter 10 tells about "The Foreigners", the longest chapter with 120 pages. Chapter 11 deals with "Industry" on its 82 pages. The topics are "Child Labor", "Socialism and Populism", "The Red Scare", and "Capital versus Labor". These topics are still censored. There are 44 pages of `Notes' and over 4 pages of a `Selected Bibliography'. This book has the details of history book with the topics of scandal and controversy. Brownlow made two mistakes on page 463. The right to keep and bear arms is part of English Common Law and not a "tragedy". Big Bill Haywood was not convicted of the murder of Governor Steunenberg.

Another must-have book from Kevin Brownlow!
By A Customer
This is a fabulous book, covering some of the more risque elements of the silent film era, as well as covering political issues. Loved Mr. Brownlow's coverage of HYPOCRITES (1915), a Lois Weber film which exists but is unfortunately as yet inaccessible on video. Can't wait for his Mary Pickford coffee table book to come out, hopefully in the next few months!

Los Angeles A to Z: An Encyclopedia of the City and County, by Leonard Pitt, Dale Pitt

Few cities captivate the imagination as does Los Angeles. It is the locus of spectaculars: movies, earthquakes, freeways, riots, sunsets. In this fascinating desk reference, Leonard and Dale Pitt have gathered a sweeping array of information on the City of Angels. Bolstering their historical and humanistic approach with scientific and technical information, the Pitts include alphabetically arranged entries on history, geography, automobile culture, sports, movies, current events, architecture, flora, fauna, scandals, biography, the arts, politics, neighborhoods, and ethnic, racial, and religious groups. Quotations throughout provide provocative and amusing tidbits about the city that has been called "the fulfillment of the American Dream." Copiously illustrated and wonderfully anecdotal, this is a book for anyone with a question, large or small, about Los Angeles.

"It's a great place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there."—Mark Twain

"At heart, Los Angeles is a vast cross-section of the Corn Belt set down incongruously in a Maxfield Parrish setting."—Irwin S. Cobb

"Hollywood is wonderful. Anyone who doesn't like it is either crazy or sober."—Raymond Chandler

"Great weather and automobiles."—Jamal Wilkes

Amazon.com Review
People complain that Los Angeles is chaos, a massive tangle of freeways and boulevards, gangs, and movie stars. Leonard and Dale Pitt bring organization to the confusion with an encyclopedia that runs from Abdul-Jabbar, Kareem to Zuma County Beach, covering the people, places, events, and icons that make up the city and county of Los Angeles. The famous neighborhoods of Hollywood and Watts are there, as are the lesser-known Winnetka and El Sereno. There are entries on when and where the smog began, how the movie industry was established, which trees are native, and just who the Black Dahlia was. With appendices covering chronology, the 1990 census, and government organizations, Los Angeles A to Z is an exceptionally well-done resource, and a welcome addition to the shelves of any Los Angelaphile, scholar, or visitor who seeks a self-guided tour.

From Library Journal
One of the major cities of the world finally gets a one-volume encyclopedia. As slippery as Los Angeles is to define?some call it 100 suburbs in search of a city?Leonard Pitt (emeritus, history, California State Univ., Northridge) and brother Dale, a freelance writer and indexer, have managed to get a competent grip on the history and lifestyle of the oft-ridiculed, always-envied city. Scholars will have to search long and hard to find anything worthwhile missing from this compendium. The entries range from a few paragraphs (Engine House #18, O.J. Simpson) to in-depth articles filled with valuable statistics and general information. The text is liberally sprinkled with illustrations and humorous quotes about the city, and the entire work is like a leisurely stroll through the life and times of this fascinating place. Even if your library isn't located anywhere near LaLa Land, seriously consider purchasing this compelling reference work for all of your patrons who will eventually end up visiting or even relocating there.?Joseph L. Carlson, Vandenberg Air Force Base Lib., Cal.

"[This] encyclopedia reflects the multiethnic population that has always constituted Los Angeles and provides current interpretations of each subject. Entries include short histories of ethnic communities and astute accounts of significant streets, neighborhoods, and adjoining cities."--"The Journal of American History

If you can think of anything you'd ever want to know about Los Angeles, chances are you will find it in this book, and in DETAIL. I was hard-pressed to find anything missing that I knew about as an Angeleno. Historical entries include L.A. water czar William Mulholland, the Chandler families, the histories of movie theaters and many, many more pieces of information. A great book for those fascinated with L.A. history.

a much needed reference
By A Customer
This book fills a void in the available descriptions of Los Angeles. It attempts to winnow out those features in its present and in its history which make it uniquely LA. It does not merely hit the high points of the rich and famous and powerful but includes much of the sweep and power of the great mass of the population which has contributed so profoundly to the evolution of LA to its present state

Elephant Seals: Population Ecology, Behavior, and PhysiologyFrom University of California Press

The largest of all seals, elephant seals rank among the most impressive of marine mammals. They are renowned for their spectacular recovery from near-extinction at the end of the nineteenth century when seal hunters nearly eliminated the entire northern species. No other vertebrate has come so close to extinction and made such a complete recovery. The physiological extremes that elephant seals can tolerate are also remarkable: females fast for a month while lactating, and the largest breeding males fast for over one hundred days during the breeding seasons, at which times both sexes lose forty percent of their body weight. Elephant seals dive constantly during their long foraging migrations, spending more time under water than most whales and diving deeper and longer than any other marine mammal.

This first book-length discussion of elephant seals brings together worldwide expertise from scientists who describe and debate recent research, including the history and status of various populations, their life-history tactics, and other findings obtained with the help of modern microcomputer diving instruments attached to free-ranging seals. Essential for all marine mammalogists for its information and its methodological innovations, Elephant Seals will also illuminate current debates about species extinctions and possible means of preventing them.

Review
"Extremely enjoyable and informative. . . . A valuable contribution to the literature regarding the ecology, physiology, and behavior of two closely related species of vertebrates. The editors and authors have made a serious (and successful) effort to contrast the results of research on elephant seals with causative factors for the observed population dynamics beyond the narrow confines of single-species models by incorporating hypotheses related to competition and large-scale changes in the physical and biological environment."--"Ecology

The Middling Sort: Commerce, Gender, and the Family in England, 1680-1780, by Margaret R. Hunt

To be one of "the middling sort" in urban England in the late seventeenth or eighteenth century was to live a life tied, one way or another, to the world of commerce. In a lively study that combines narrative and alternately poignant and hilarious anecdotes with convincing analysis, Margaret R. Hunt offers a view of middling society during the hundred years that separated the Glorious Revolution from the factory age. Thanks to her exploration of many family papers and court records, Hunt is able to examine what people thought, felt, and valued. She finds that early capitalism and early modern family life were far more insecure than their "classical" models supposed.

Commercial needs and social needs coincided to a large extent. The family is central to Hunt's story, and she shows how financial struggles brought conflict, ambiguity, and tension to the home. She investigates the way gender intertwined with class and family hierarchy and the way many businesses survived as precarious successes, secured through the sacrifices made by female as well as male family members.

The Middling Sort offers a dynamic portrait of a society struggling to minimize the considerable social and psychic dislocation that accompanied England's launch of a full-scale market economy.

Strikingly well-written
By Coleman
Hunt is one of those writers who is dangerous to lay readers because she writes so much better than her fellow-scholars that one reads only her. No doubt there are historians who differ with her, but I am unlikely ever to read them because they are dry and dusty, and she enthralls.

It is a mystery to me how she does it. Her source materials are account books, insurance company files, and trade association directories. Somehow, out of these she conjures spirits of dead shopkeepers, and you see their fear of ruin and disgrace and their desire that their children be educated differently from the gentry who couldn't keep track of their money and who wouldn't pay their bills on time. These are the people that Becky Sharp and Rawdon Crawley ruin in Vanity Fair, the anonymous, invisible creditors in dozens of English novels about gentry running up debts with tradesmen.

It has been a couple of years since I last re-read this, so this summary is only what has stuck with me:

They were among the first masterless men. There was a currency shortage, so they had to take out loans, buy on credit, and give credit. There were no bankruptcy laws, so if they couldn't pay what they owed, they were stripped bare, and family members who cosigned on loans were stripped bare as well. They lived in continual fear of ruin. Hunt could reconstruct their lives from account books because they used accounting as a system of self-mastery, a way of holding themselves together without having someone in a big house on a hill tell them what to do. Their harsh, rigid Puritanism was another form of self-mastery, of holding themselves to account.

If you were raised to think that the middle classes, the bourgeoisie, are people of no interest, read this book. These people were extraordinary. If you are descended from them, you have much of which to be proud.

Illuminating history of the proto-middle class
By hmf22
This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the social history of 17c-18c Britain. Hunt examines both men and women of the "middling sort"-- the middle ranks of society-- from several angles. Her treatment of the advice literature is particularly intriguing, as is her treatment of adolescence and youth. Scholarly, yet eminently readable.

Better than middling!!
By Hazel'sGrandaughter
This is an indispensible book for anybody working on eighteenth-century social, gender, or women's history in Britain or North America. Beautifully written--impeccably researched--and if you like the history of husbands, wives, daughters and sons in the family, it's a treat to read. Why isn't it out in paperback?

Policing Shanghai, 1927-1937 (Philip E.Lilienthal Books), by Frederic Wakeman

Prewar Shanghai: casinos, brothels, Green Gang racketeers, narcotics syndicates, gun-runners, underground Communist assassins, Comitern secret agents. Frederic Wakeman's masterful study of the most colorful and corrupt city in the world at the time provides a panoramic view of the confrontation and collaboration between the Nationalist secret police and the Shanghai underworld.

In detailing the life and politics of China's largest urban center during the Guomindang era, Wakeman covers an array of topics: the puritanical social controls implemented by the police; the regional differences that surfaced among Shanghai's Chinese, the influence of imperialism and Western-trained officials. Parts of this book read like a spy novel, with secret police, torture, assassination; and power struggles among the French, International Settlement, and Japanese consular police within Shanghai.

Chiang Kai-shek wanted to prove that the Chinese could rule Shanghai and the country by themselves, rather than be exploited and dominated by foreign powers. His efforts to reclaim the crime-ridden city failed, partly because of the outbreak of war with Japan in 1937, but also because the Nationalist police force was itself corrupted by the city.

Wakeman's exhaustively researched study is a major contribution to the study of the Nationalist regime and to modern Chinese urban history. It also shows that twentieth-century China has not been characterized by discontinuity, because autocratic government—whether Nationalist or Communist—has prevailed.

A Golden Age of Crime
By Marco Antonio Abarca
Shanghai in the 1920's and 30's must have been the single most difficult city in the world to govern. Shanghai's reputation as a center of vice and corruption was legendary in its own day. At the beginning of the Twenty First Century, the Shangai of this period still holds its own romantic appeal.
Frederic Wakeman's book is a study of the Nationalist Government's attempt to bring order and discipline to a city through a program of national renewal. Their goal was to one day recapture the city's full sovereignty by showing the West that the Government could effectively govern Shanghai. This book is the story of how this worthy goal was subverted to the political and monetary needs of the Nationalist Government.
Although written for an academic audience, Wakeman's story of the Green Gang, secret Comminturn Agents, turncoat Communist Assasins and corrupt police officials has an appeal that goes far beyond the merely academic. I loved this book because I enjoyed reading about the intricate details of some of the greatest crimes and criminals of this truly golden age of crime.

Excellent research work by a top-class American Scholar
By Tony
Unlike many other books bearing similar titles, this book certainly offers you deep insights about policing in Shanghai in the 1930s. The Author has done extensive and most importantly, accurate research in those era. For those unfamiliar with China before Communism, it offers a taste of the value in Chinese Society, which unfortunately, was fundamentally changed since the introduction of communism in the 1940s. A great book to read, and to be treated seriously.

From Library Journal
For the average individual trying to manage in a polluted world, this is an eminently readable guide to the toxins we live with. The first part of the book includes an overview of toxic issues, discusses the major sources of toxic exposure (air, water, food, and consumer products), and deals with special groups of toxics like petrochemicals and radiation. Part 2 is an alphabetical listing of over 100 commonly occurring toxic substances. Each entry addresses properties, health effects, and protection and prevention methods, and provides suggestions for further reading. A cross reference to entries by exposure ("household activities," "workplace contaminants") is a useful aid. A much-needed, comprehensive reference for the lay reader, this book should be in all public libraries.

Review
"The best book of its kind for the layman. The general chapters are a good overview of a wide-ranging subject but put environmental toxins into their proper perspective. The individual entries are supported by an excellent glossary and full index."--"Times Higher Education Supplement

From the Inside Flap
"Toxics A to Z is comprehensive, readable, usable, and--given the authors' sound, practical advice--quite doable. This well-organized book informs in clear contexts what we as consumers and we as citizens can do for a healthful environment."--Ralph Nader, Founder, Center for the Study of Responsive Law
"Judicious, clear, and more authoritative than any other single book in print, Toxics A to Z is a realistic appraisal of the impact that everyday hazards have on our health. Few people reporting on pollution hazards are of John Harte's scientific stature. Still fewer have surveyed and summarized virtually all the published research on the nature of impact of toxic substances in the environment as Harte and his colleagues have done. And no scientific research article is as easy to read or as comprehensive as this book."--Paul Ehrlich, Director, Center for Conservation Biology, Stanford University "Toxics A to Z will undoubtedly become the standard textual guide to toxic substances for environmentalists, biologists, chemists, and others interested in environmental issues, well into the next decade. The authors have provided an outstanding review of the sources, types, environmental and health effects, and management of toxins in our modern industrial society."--Peter H. Raven, Director, Missouri Botanical Garden

"Toxics A to Z" should be required reading!
By Keith Ball
"Toxics A to Z" gives a complete, and thoroughly readable introduction to all of the various potential environmental hazards we face today. Although scientifically based, it gives a very good layman's explanation of the kinds of hazards to watch out for, and what we can do to avoid or reduce our exposure. Without being alarmist, it points out not just what we should be worried about, but the actions we can take to aviod these hazards and to help eliminate them from our environment. The book also gives a literally "A to Z" coverage of many of the everyday toxics we might be exposed to, either at home or at the workplace, without ever realizing it. An extremely informative and empowering book!

If you are concerned about the fumes you breathe at the gas pump, the No Pest Strip at home, or the pesticides on your fruit, then this is the book for you. Thousand of chemicals are listed and the level of toxicity is given. These are chemicals you encounter everyday.
