What emerges, according to Abrahamian, is a militant, sometimes contradictory, political ideology that focuses not on issues of scripture and theology but on the immediate political, social, and economic grievances of workers and the middle class.

These essays reveal how the Islamic Republic has systematically manipulated history through televised "recantations," newspapers, school textbooks, and even postage stamps. All are designed to bolster the clergy's reputation as champions of the downtrodden and as defenders against foreign powers. In this collection of essays, Abrahamian ( The Iranian Mojahedin , LJ 5/1/89) challenges the Western perception of Khomeini as a fundamentalist. He argues instead that Khomeini was a populist and that the current Iranian Islamic Republic has largely abandoned terrorism for pragmatism. Khomeini is presented as a radical cleric who broke with traditional Iranian Shi'ism to pursue social and economic reforms--an interpretation that ignores Shi'ism's revolutionary origins as a reaction of the have-nots to the Sunni Umayyad Caliphate. Abrahamian instead sees Khomeini as a champion of Iran's petite bourgeoisie and a defender of individual property rights, in this regard likening Khomeini's efforts to what he calls Latin American Populism. Khomein's Populist, religious and cultural authenticity

Abrahamian's essays from 1993 argue that Khomeini was an astute religious Populist who did not micro manage the revolution but helped motivate, encourage, and lead a revolt that was against irreligious Royalty, foreign interests, cultural debasement of Islamic Iran and provided authenticity for Iranians.

The "Paranoid Style" in Iranian politics played a significant role in the revolution and also in the difficulty of interpretation since. Another chapter traces May Day celebrations (and what reminds one of "socialistic realist" art posters and stamps) to show evolution from elements of a worker's revolution to a nationalist bourgeois realism. The evolving perceptions of property and state (another essay) puts perspective on rhetoric of people's rights that never threatened private property but came to more strongly support a national economy so long as Iranian culture and religion were secure and foreign interests well controlled - pragmatism did not replace principle.

The most important essay argues convincingly that the "Fundamentalist" label explains little about the character or the success of the revolution. (This should be a strong reminder to the labelers of our own time who feel they explain and understand by name calling.)

Essays, perhaps necessarily, sometimes overlap and are uneven. At times they could have been briefer and tighter. A reader would do well to have some basic picture of Iranian history at least back into the 19th century. Yet the book has considerable value and the first and last essays on the "Populism" of the revolution and the "Paranoid Style" of Iranian politics are of special value.

Like most students of Iran, Abrahamian brings the academic's bias against religion having much importance. He prefers to see Khomeini's ideas "as a flexible political movement." But discount this bias and you'll find Abrahamian makes a strong and original case that "the behavior of Khomeini and the Islamic Republic has been determined less by scriptural principles than by immediate political, social, and economic needs." He makes this case the old-fashioned way, through a close reading of texts and study of events. Abrahamian's intimate knowledge of Iran imbues his short study with the sort of insight all too rare in the study of Iran; and it's certainly one of the most important books on Iran to appear in English in some years. The author catalogues the profound changes in Khomeini's thinking that took place in the era 1965-70, when he replaced many of his traditional Shi'ite beliefs with the trendy notions of European Marxism (as mediated by Leftist Iranian intellectuals). Abrahamian demonstrates the evolution of the mullahs' relations with the Left through a close analysis of May Day celebrations. Over and over again, he shows how Khomeini changed his views to fit current needs, contradicting not only himself but some of Islam's most basic tenets (such as the priority of Sacred Law over raison d'état). Indeed, the sainted ayatollah apparently stuck with just one tenet through his entire career: the inviolability of private property.

One of the best books about Iran's Revolution

I wish everyone who talks about iran would first read this book. it is very balanaced, and thoughtful. It has original ideas formulated by Abrahamian. these ideas came from reading khomieni in farsi. not from prejudice, or from heresay. the author did his research, and presented the revolution and the transformation of khomeini's ideas pre and post revolution the best way i have yet to read.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in gaining insight into iran from someone who actually has spent much of his life objectively and with wisdom studing it, and did research by reading the most important sources in farsi!

sarmiento was the best politician

There are no words to convey the enormity of this man's contribution to the progress of his country. Several numbered highlights and anecdotes:

1) He founded the military Academy (like West Point), remarking the "I do not want ignorant sable rattlers in my military"
2) He also founded the Naval Academy, with the same remarks. He did not create an Air Force Academy since there was no flight in his time.
3) He wrote several books on politics and social mores. I think they add up to twenty Volumes.
4) He founded the current best Newspaper in Chile while exiled in the 1830's
5) While president he encouraged the railroads by the British, that covered the most important areas of the country.
6) He visited the US twice, once before the civil war and one immediately after. He befriended Thomas Mann, the foremost educator of the US at the time. While here, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor's degree by the University of Michigan
7) He was so admired by Missis Mann that she wrote a translation into English of his most important book "Civilacion y Barbarie"
about life in the times of the dictator Juan Manuel the Rosas.
One could go on and on but the book being reviewed has lots of information.

Some anecdotes.

While here, he watching a debate in Congress about the issue of federal aid to education. It was being opposed by a certain member of Congress so he dropped from the gallery and said something to the effect " Sir,I come from a banana republic, but we would not dare to oppose anything that resulted in reducing the funds available to public education. We are of the opinion the since the public is the sovereign in a democracy, we need to "educate the sovereign"

He presided over the inauguration of the first swimming pool in Buenos Aires with the remark "Women should use this facility because in this country there are only two kinds of women: Those are fat and those that are going to be!".

How timely a remark for this country and this age!

While commissioner of Education he was told by a delegation from the first soccer club in Buenos Aires called "Alumni". " I received a complaint that you kick around a ball resulted in braking glass windows, Is that true? However, do you also educate children? If yes, you have my permission to brake as many windows as you want!

One last remark: It you have a chance, get a copy of a book translated into English called "A Visit to the Ranquel Indians".
It is a wonderful adventure story written by an officer of the Argentine Army that, when Sarmiento was president, had the gall of disobeying his higher ups and went to visit a tribe of Indians in the interior of the country. There, he explained to the chiefs of the tribes that a peace treaty had just been signed by Sarmiento, and that he was there to explain it.

What is remarkable is the vast knowledge of French literature that this officer had. The translator from Spanish was Eva Gillies a retired lecturer of the University of London. How much knowledge can a simple colonel of the Army have? This is a tribute to Sarmiento's Army academy that had been recently founded!

Gat this book edited by the University of Nebraska Press. It is enjoyable reading

Drawing analogies from the 19th-century discovery of the laws of thermodynamics, European social scientists envisioned the toiling worker's body as a "human motor," a living machine; maximizing work-force efficiency and eradicating the "disease" of fatigue seemed within reach. Psychologists and physiologists subjected the body's rhythms and movements to laboratory study. The psychiatric complaint of neurasthenia, or nervous exhaustion, was epidemic, and German scientists in the early 1900s sought a vaccine to cure fatigue. In a dense, rewarding study, Rabinbach ( The Crisis of Austrian Socialism ) shows how the "science of work," spreading beyond such areas as industrial management, physical education and accident prevention, pervaded the language of technocrats, Marxists and fascists who viewed the worker as a machine. He pinpoints a source of modern spiritual malaise: the transformation from a strictly work-centered society to one in which work has been abandoned as a source of self-fulfillment.

Terrific Analysis of Labor and Fatigue

Provides a detailed historical perspective with documentation, of western Europe's fixation with the study of fatigue, productivity. For work physiologists, this is a must read as it provides the foundational basis for present day laboratory procedures and research directions.

Good amount of historical human thermodynamic trivia.

The book is similar in theme and content to Mirowski's 1989 More Heat than Light (albeit less technically rigorous), containing interesting trivia tidbits, e.g. that German mathematician Carl Neumann, the first to introduce the d-hat derivative symbol for inexact differentials (1875), had views on how economic life related to energetic components of energy exchanges between people. Here's a short bio on Rabinbach:

twisted metaphysics

This is one of those books which contains a good deal of interesting information and reviews of earlier discussions; for instance, McLuhan and Mumford and even a dash of Heidegger's anti-technological views. But the basic premise of the book rests on spurrious grounds. Man is said to be techological in his essence. Language and clothes are all extensions of our human 'nature' and thus by definition, tools or technology. Thus, all forms of technology which extend man's own capabilities are also seen to be a continuation of that same 'platonic project' - wrong! This even fits neatly into that scenario of man as machine, and downloading ourselves into computers at some future date. The self is humbled and made irrelevant. And it seems that Rothenberg has a teleological viewpoint; and this is all inevitable; as he says, we're just getting closer to nature all the time.

This is excellent. Fogelson comprehensively describes the process by which LA attained its unique character as a city and how the region that surrounds it was affected by its remarkable growth up until 1930, then read this. Some of the sections on bonds and financing are a bit of a slog if you don't have much background in those subjects (I don't). But if you want to get a more nuanced account of why LA abandoned mass rail transit when most other cities embraced it and why so much of the cityscape lacks grace or forethought in layout and design, then I recommend this book. BTW I live here and like the city and find the place endlessly fascinating.

Hey! It's a Classic in Urban History!

Yes, this certainly is a classic in urban history. Fogelson succicently tells the story of Los Angeles, from it's beginnings as a Mexican backwater berg to the enormous Metropolis it became. Fogelson includes chapters on all of the important subjects: L.A. and its Mexican roots, the quest for water, the signifigance of new modes of transportation, the failure of the light water system, the development of the board, the conflict with San Diego, the public utility movement and, of course, the progressive movement.
Fogelson's history is academic in tone, but it's just such concise and well documented writing that you have to love it. A must for readers of Southern California history. I might add that although this was a book about L.A., the chapter on the L.A./SD conflict for Southern California supremacy was actually the best thing I've been able to dig up thus far on San Diego history! How about that, huh?
I might also add that you might want to track down a first edition hardback of this book, rather then paying for this overpriced reprint. The original hardback is handsomely designed and makes a fine edition to your book shelve.

Not for first-time readers of L.A. history

This book is really quite dull and outdated. It's a must-read only for die-hard enthusiasts of L.A. history who want to pick up a few more tidbits. For those with a budding interest, I recommend Blake Gumprect's highly readible and fascinating "The Los Angeles River" or Carey McWilliams' enjoyable "Southern California." If you add William McCawley's "The First Angelinos," Horace Bell's "Reminiscences of a Ranger," and John and LaRee Caughey's "Los Angeles: Biography of a City," you will have a much more well-rounded perspective on L.A. than you will get from Fogelson's book alone. Fogelson's book reads like a cross between popular history and a city planning textbook, yet with none of the interesting aspects of either style.

This latest work from an author known for her contributions to the new cultural history is a daring multidisciplinary investigation of the imaginative foundations of modern politics. "Family romance" was coined by Freud to describe the fantasy of being freed from one's family and belonging to one of higher social standing. In Freud's view, the family romance was a way for individuals to fantasize about their place in the social order. Hunt uses the term more broadly, to describe the images of the familial order underlying revolutionary politics. She investigates the narratives of family relations that structured the collective political unconscious. Most Europeans in the eighteenth century thought of their rulers as fathers and of their nations as families writ large. The French Revolution violently disrupted that patriarchal model of authority and raised troubling questions about what was to replace it. The king and queen were executed after dramatic separate trials. Prosecutors in the trial of the queen accused her of exerting undue influence on the king and his ministers, engaging in sexual debauchery, and even committing incest with her eight-year-old son. Hunt focuses on the meaning of killing the king-father and the queen-mother and what these ritual sacrifices meant to the establishment of a new model of politics. In a wide-ranging account that uses novels, engravings, paintings, speeches, newspaper editorials, pornographic writing, and revolutionary legislation about the family, Hunt shows that politics were experienced through the grid of the family romance.

Good textbook to hold onto

This is one of those books that leads you to purchase many other books, whether or not you can afford them. "Family Romance" was assigned for one of my college classes and I have picked it up several times since, both as a reference for other research and just to read through. The writing is excellent and the points well-supported. It is only an occasional conclusion that reaches beyond the immediate evidence, and these few are bolstered elsewhere in the work. The only thing that might be lacking is further illustration of cited artwork, the majority of which is far from pornographic (with the exception of the chapter on Sade). I would have liked her to expand more on the role of religion in the family model as well, especially in relation to those who saw themselves as martyrs to the revolution. In the former case, though, most of the works can be found in a general survey of Art History, and the summary of the latter points does not detract from the strength of her main argument. She describes her theory of an unconscious, "collective imagination" thoroughly, and connects it to important figures and events, giving it a chronological shape that makes it both easy to follow and convincing. Just don't follow the footnotes until you have a good savings account built up:)

Good cultural study of how the Revolution affected women

Please disregard the negative review. Hunt's text is fairly accessible. She describes how the great republican and liberal revolutionaries depoliticized women by emphasizing domesticity. Simply: women could not have political rights or privileges because their biology and psychology directed them toward the home and childrearing. Hunt argues from cultural products: plays, festival, and symbols that the revolutionaries invented to legitimize their ideas (lots of quaint images of home life.) She fails at many points to explain the impact of these images and how widely people could have been affected by them. Many of these products will be unfamiliar to many readers, especially those without knowledge of the literature of the period. Furthermore, I would not recommend the books as a general history of the French Revolution. Even Hunt assumes that you know about the "great story." It is a much better book after you have read several political and at least a few social histories of the revolution. Thereafter, Hunt's books is an excellent counterpoint to the notion that the revolution was liberating--it wasn't!

I am one of those who DOES use this for class

Lynn Hunt is one of the most recognized authorities on this era, she was president of the American Historical Association and she writes pretty well also. So I agree with the other reviewer and have used this book for classes and have not hesitated to adopt it. A community college student majoring in psychology found it very informative, and in that setting as well as at a four-year university I have found the book is highly useful as a course text. The illustrations (woodcut porn, really) provide an instant lesson: the king can and was degraded as a political figure via sexual imagery. In other words, pornography can be political (Larry Flynt isn't a trailblazer, after all). This book will not help someone looking to understand the basics of what happened between 1789-94 but if you have a grasp of that and want to understand more about creating a nation of men as "equals" or "brothers" (no women need apply), then read this book. You might find yourself thinking about it long after reading it (which is when you might really find yourself appreciating it).

Tracing the story of the Southern Pacific from the founding of its earliest predecessor roads in Texas and California to the Southern's final amalgamation in the 1920s, Orsi artfully weaves corporate history with social history to show the impact of the steel horse on frontier settlement, the development of cities and the environment. All Hail the S & P!

This actually could have been a three star review, but I have to give credit to the thuroughness of the scholarship, the excellent photographs and the superb 200+ end notes, which are a mini-book in themselves.

Orsi's book is "revisionist" if it is proper to call a thesis that glorifies a massive American corporation "revisionist". I suppose that it qualifies if one is taking the scholarship of major American and French universities from the sixties onward as the standard.

Simply put, Orsi's goal is to set the record straight about the Southern Pacific. No "Octopus" in his eyes, the Southern Pacific was an important innovator in the area of agriculture, conservation and scientific forestry. Indeed, without the Southern Pacific, California and the west as we know it would not have been possible.

Aside from rewriting bits of history from the railroad's perspective, Orsi's main scholarly contribution is his access to the Southern Pacific's own corporate records. Certainly this is an approach that gives a more complicated picture of the corporations motives and morals then the simplistic "Octopus" portrait of Frank Norris.

Orsi also has access to better statistics then scholars operating in the past had (i.e. the railroad's internal statistics), so that allows him to fairly castigate those who have painted an unrealistic portrait of, say, the size of the Southern Pacific's land grants.

Although I am sympathetic to his attempt to rehabilitate the image of the Southern Pacific, I found some of the assertions regarding the tremendous difficulties the S & P had in carrying out its good intentions hard to take. If one was to rely on Orsi's book as one's only source, you might believe that the Southern Pacific was a money losing venture, operated out of sheer philanthropy of the "Big Four".

I'm serious about that comment: There is no mention about the tremendous personal fortunes of Stanford, Huntington and Co., let alone any discussion of the profit of the railroad as a whole. On the other hand, Orsi goes out of his way to demonstrate expenditures the railroad made in support of the common good.

Of course, I can hear the authorial response: Everyone already knows about the money that was made, I'm trying to fill in the stuff that everyone doesn't know.

Still, one example: The S & P operated the Pacific Land Company, which operated at the behest of the Big Four by subdividing land for sale. Orsi says that there wasn't any record of how much money that Land Company made and says it's impossible to even determine how the land and profit was accounted for within the S & P. Is that so? I find it curious, as I found the curious the almost complete lack of (positive) financial data.

On the whole, I thought Orsi does a great job. However, I would have liked more balance, even if he is writing this book to even the score.

Orsi Gets it Right

As an historian said about this book; "It should be required reading for those interested in the West, the environment and business". Indeed it should. Because more than just blowing away all the dis-information that the Southern Pacific suffered from for decades (and contributed to its collapse), this book provides excellent case studies of how industry, government, NGO's, and the Press cooperated on solving complex and politically charged problems. In fact it was amazing to me to see how well and patiently these disparate groups worked with each other. Much more so than today. There is a lesson here.

Fascinating look at the Southern Pacific's non-railroad activities

This is a wonderful railroad history, that actually has little to do with the railroad. As (eventually) a large landowner from land grants, and greatly dependent on the success of its farmer customers, the railroad was forced to take an active interest in the stewardship of the West's resources, at a time when government was either unwilling or unable to do much. Massively researched, evidently over a long period of years (there are 177 pages of notes), Orsi shows how the railroad did a lot to develop the West without destroying its resources. Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks, and Lake Tahoe, owe much of their current beauty and protected status to the efforts of the railroad and its managers. A lawsuit pushed by the SP ended hydraulic mining (which was burying farmland below under barren gravel). It sold its land to farmers on very easy terms (better than the government's terms), with the its land divided up to form viable farms. The railroad did much to establish and organize water supplies in its (mostly) arid territory, it organized stock trails so stockmen could get their herds to market, and it helped establish the first forest fire fighting services. Orsi also takes a long look at the Mussel Slough Affair, showing that it was an organized attempt by squatters to steal land. The judge who ordered the evictions of these thieves was incidentally the same one who ended hydraulic mining in California, and the SP's local land agent later lobbied in Washington to get the first Yosemite and Seqouia Parks bill passed. So many charter members of John Muir's Sierra Club were railroad officials that some feared the organization was contaminated.
Well written, the book is a tremendously interesting look at how the railroad established the West, for its own benefit of course but also in awareness of the responsibility to maintain the West's resources. Highly recommended.

The theatre, life and writings of a brilliant lunatic

This isn't a book that you read from cover to cover. Find a subject that interests you. Then another. And then another. Soon you'll find yourself caught in his web of genius. His madness came from his endless spring of sanity that could no longer hold up under the insanity of the world he lived in. Genius suffers. He suffered too much. Years ago I saw a one man play "Artaud's Project" in Chicago. Best piece of theatre I've ever seen. This was my introduction to Artaud. This book captures this brilliant lunatic's crystal clear vision and pain. His letters are prehaps the highlight of this collection. This book is not for the masses, though, I wish it were. So much insanity and ignorance could be wiped out in a single stroke if people understood this man. Of course the sane appear to be insane in an insane world. If any of what I've said makes the least bit of sense to you this book is for you!

Tome essential to all theatre artists

Studying Artaud is one way of taking a deep dive off into the realm of the unknown. His struggle to fully comprehend and describe lucidly his thought process and the clockwork of his soul; his obsessive desire and drive to break beyond the mundane level of median psycological theatre to rediscover the fiery roots and potent magic of the theatre event; and his visionary words---all of these combine to give us a man who was deep, profound and troubled---hence, utterly human, and truly inspirational to any theatre artist or artist in general. This translation of some of his most essential writings is essential to anyone who wishes to study the avant garde theatre. His influence is at times lucid and clearly defined; at other times, one sees that the myth of Artaud has distorted what the actual man wanted and worked for. In dealing with any artist who has created such a controversy (in his own time as well as in our time), one has to approach his work with the discipline of a tightrope walker. And Sontag's work provides the researcher with a straight, keen and powerful translation. Among the other translations of Artaud, this one is the best anthology available for the experienced researcher and the burning initiate. Read it as an athlete of the heart.

Artaud: what and where and how were you thinking?

Selected Writings isn't an easy read. I jumped around a lot. This stuff is the most intense stuff I've ever come across. Artaud is one of the most important writers to rationalise beyond logic. His ideas on Van Gogh prove, beyond doubt, that his sense of aesthetics was far more acute than his contemporaries. They always said weird stuff about Neitszche, how he was more 'in touch with himself' than other writers or, indeed, society at large. But Artaud explodes that idea, since he continually toys with his own sense of himself to the extreme. Reading Artaud for prolonged periods is like going beyond this (his) sense of self to another place, something completely new and agonizing. His ideas abouty the theatre are quite well established but there is other stuff here. The poems, monologues and just the sheer variety of 'inner scenarios' at play here really astounds you. 'To have done with the judgement of God' must be the most extreme form of self expressed mental torture around! (incidentally, am I correct in thinking there is a recording of this piece knockin' around?) Anyways, please take a slice of the insanity, you never know where it will lead you...
