A deep and comprehensive scholarly treatment of the Mahavidyas.

This is probably the most comprehensive scholarly book on the Mahavidyas easily accessible within the English reading community. The Author explores one of the most fascinating themes in Hinduism, namely the
Ten Goddesses supposed to grant supreme Knowledge, unveil the mystery
of existence, drive humans towards liberation.
Prof. Kinsley follows an approach which is predominantly scriptural,
but also considering iconography, and anthropological aspects.
He develops most of his arguments from Sanskrit sources, with
extensive citations from the prominent Tantric and Puranic literature,
but he also adds some information obtained on the field,
through interview and direct experience. The result is an extremely
pleasant read which may satisfy scholars of Hinduism and practitioners alike. I read this book seven years ago for the first time,
and I keep finding new information in it.

The books starts investigating the Mahavidyas as a collective
entity, and five mythological and philosophical versions of the
origin of this collective entity are presented.
The idea that the Mahavidyas may be conceived as aspects of
a Great Cosmic Goddess, MahaDevi, be She represented as Sati,
Parvati, Kali, Durga or Satakshi, is introduced.
Then chapters on the individual Mahavidyas provide a rich
repository of primary sources, iconographical representations,
and liturgical details.
The concluding reflections explore the possible impact of this
kind of worship from philosophical, psychological and
sociological perspectives.

The book, as good scholarly texts should be, is somewhat detached and dispassionate, presenting evidence in an un-opinionated and rational manner.
However, the Author is able, through a careful choice of quotations from Tantras, to insert at least one very profound concept which may be useful also to practitioners. This is focused on what is perhaps one of
Hinduism's crucial points, namely the relationship between the One
and the Many.
Strictly speaking, Hinduism has a very complex approach on the issue
of One versus Many Gods. I am convinced that to characterize Hinduism
as simply polytheistic or monotheistic is partial and superficial.
Various Hindu traditions point at a substantial One-ness existing
beyond Time and Space, but simultaneously portray a multiplicity of Spiritual Entities, layered through a stratified cosmos in which the
Many dominate.
The essence of Shaktism, (and of other Hindu traditions as well) is
to realize the Oneness through Multiplicity. Unlike other Faiths which proclaim One Transcendent God, separated from, and not immerse and immanent in Nature, the Godhead of these Hindu traditions is -both- Transcendent and Immanent. It is Transcendent `before' Creation and `after' Dissolution, self-embraced in its timeless Unity. But it is immanent when conceived through the manifestation of Time and Space,
Name and Form, and Multiplicity.

The Ten Mahavidyas offer a wonderful symbolic depiction of this complex
and sophisticated system. Each Mahavidya appears as an emanation of a Transcendent principle, a supreme Feminine concept existing on a remote plane beyond existence, space, and time.
So each Mahavidya is a subset of the Supreme Godhead. Yet, each Mahavidya
is a full universe on Her own, and the practitioner who tries to approach Her through Sadhana could experience, starting from the Multiplicity in which the sensible world is immersed, the Oneness with the Supreme Godhead.
The Mahavidyas appear from the point of view of the One as a fraction
of It. Yet, from the point of view of the human, they are complete, self-sufficient, without a second.
Somewhat as a fractal geometry, in which the exact same structure can be recognized while zooming into a detail, so the intricate cosmic perception of esoteric Hinduism should allow humans to recognize the entire Universe into one of its fragments.

By carefully selecting and referring to the appropriate sources, Prof. Kinsley is able to subtly hint at this very profound and complex concept of Hindu philosophy. This is per se a remarkable achievement for a book conceived within the academic framework, supposed to document a tradition
and not necessarily to provide spiritual teachings.

The reason why I give only four stars instead of five just reflects my
own personal bias. I do consider the most wonderful book on the Mahavidyas the work by Shankaranarayanan (Ten Cosmic Powers) which is completely centered on Sadhana. Since I am no scholar of Hinduism, I gained the most from that work.

But if one has to evaluate Professor Kinsley's excellent work from a strictly academic and scholarly perspective, I am convinced that it deserves the maximum rating: a truly excellent work from a truly
excellent scholar.

david kinsley is one of our heroes. he started to write very special and beautiful books about hinduism (especially about godesses/kali) in the late sixties - and continued his interesting and fruitful journey through the fields of barely known aspects of hinduism until today. his work on the ten mahavidyas is a crowning achievement. there are virtually no books about this theme field on the market - and there are no good books about the mahavidyas at all. kinsley fills the gap (once more)... and how! bravo!! kinsleys writing style is clear as a mountain spring, he really has a capacity for explaining complex hindu ideas with the utmost clarity. a must-read.

In trying to understand the Mahavidyas and failing to bring in their connection to the planets of Jyotisha I wonder what this author was doing in India or who his sources were in his studies. This book isn't bad but is a hode podge of stories and scholarly work that make very little connections of the deeper meaning of the mahavidyas in any integrated fashion.

Almaguer shows how the confrontation between white immigrants and the Mexican ranchero and working class populations was also a contestation over racial status in which racialization influenced and was in turn influenced by class position in the changing economic order. Partly because of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which granted U.S. citizenship and other rights, parts of the Mexican population were integrated into the emerging Anglo society more easily than other racialized groups. A case study of Ventura County highlights declining political and economic fortunes of the Mexican elite while showing how Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, and Indian populations were permanently relegated to the bottom of the class structure as unskilled manual workers.

The fate of the Native American population provides perhaps the most extreme example of white supremacy during the period. Popular conceptions of Native Americans as "uncivilized and "heathen," justified the killing of more than 8,000 men, women, and children between 1848 and 1870. Many survivors were incorporated at the periphery of Anglo society, often as indentured laborers and virtual slaves.

Underpinning the institutional structuring of white supremacy were notions such as "manifest destiny," the inherent good of the capitalist wage-system, and the superiority of Christianity and Euro-American culture, all of which helped to marginalize non white groups in California and justify Anglo-American class dominance. As other racialized groups assumed new roles, Almaguer assesses the complex interplay between economic forces and racial attitudes that simultaneously structured and allocated "group position" in the new social hierarchy.

California remains a contested racial frontier, as political struggles over the rights and opportunities of different groups continue to reverberate along racial lines. Racial Fault Lines is an invaluable contribution to our understanding of ethnicity and class in America, and the social construction of "race" in the Far West.

Important work in California history.

I realized that racism influenced the history of our state, but Almaguer does a brilliant job at revealing the degree to which this sad statement is true. This is an importnat book for anyone who lives in California, especially for those involved in governemnt, business, or public education. Racism has had a real effect on our state and people of color, and it contineus to today. The knowledge contained in this book can help us move away from our mistakes and better understand how public action and government policies can change things, for better or worse.

Almaguer has given us a useful history of racial attitudes and white supremacy in nineteenth century Cali. Avoiding a "binary"-- or black/white-- understanding of racial relations, Racial Fault Lines traces the unique racial sagas of Mexicans, Chinese, and Indian peoples in their encounters with "white" Californians. Almaguer could do more to investigate interactions among such groups ACROSS the categories of "racial otherness": Mexican, Chinese, and Indian. SOme readers will also question his chronology and wonder to what extent the 'origins of white supremacy' in California might have begun much earlier than the mid-nineteenth century, where his book focuses.

Can international organizations be improved by a deliberate institutional design that reflects lessons learned in peacekeeping, the protection of human rights, and environmentally sound economic development? In this incisive work, Ernst Haas examines these and other issues to delineate the conditions under which organizations change their methods for defining problems.

Haas contends that international organizations change most effectively when they are able to redefine the causes underlying the problems to be addressed. He shows that such self-reflection is possible when the expert-generated knowledge about the problems can be made to mesh with the interests of hegemonic coalitions of member governments. But usually efforts to change organizations begin as adaptive practices that owe little to a systematic questioning of past behavior. Often organizations adapt and survive without fully satisfying most of their members, as has been the case with the United Nations since 1970.

Sorting It All Out

HABITS OF THE HEART is a tour de force whose insights into America are as relevant today as they were nearly twenty years ago when the book was published. It was hailed at that time as an instant classic of sociology, and compared to such influential works as MIDDLETOWN and THE LONELY CROWD. If anything, its insights are even more pertinent now.
The subtitle "Individualism and Commitment in American Life" is the main trope guiding the book, a bipolar perspective that neatly describes the American inability to reconcile the "utilitarian individualism" of Hobbes' "war of all against all" as exemplified in the liberal economic philosophy that grew up with America, with the "expressive individualism" of Whitman and Emerson which developed as a reaction to (in Henry James'' words), the "grope of wealth." The final chapter which elucidates "Six American Visions of the Public Good" describing them as three pairs of conflicting visions: "The Establishment versus Populism," "Neocapitalism versus Welfare Liberalism" and "The Administered Society versus Economic Democracy" is the best example of this dualist view of America, but as Bellah and his fellow authors describe it, these competing visions often hold as many similarities as differences.
Specifically, from the latter 19th century until the depression both The Establishment and Populists recognized there was and needed to be a moral component in American public life. The Establishment side was represented Andrew Carnegie's "Gospel of Wealth," while on the Populist side were economic socialists such as Eugene Debs. The mores of the that time, de Toqueville's "habits of the heart," were still moralistic, still partaking of the ideal of the legacy of Jefferson's freeholding citizen even capitalism shook America off its foundations.
Of the next pair, Neocapitalism (which rose to its greatest heights in the form of Ronald Reagan) and Welfare Liberalism (exemplified by FDR), while they have different means look to the same ends according the authors. The first seeks to empower citizens through the "war of all against all" and keep the country competitive by unraveling the safety net. Slackers and failures must not be encouraged to take advantage of the winners because it is morally debilitating for society as a whole. Welfare Liberalism on the other hand believes that the net should be stronger because it has less confidence in the Market God believes in better chances and social justice, but still views Americans as individuals who must be encouraged in the Hobbesian war.
Of the last two visions, Felix Rohatyn, is the poster boy for the Administered Society -- a continuation of the Progressive ideal of scientific "mastery" a la Lippman, while Michael Harrington represents Economic Democracy. As compared to Rohaytn, who endorses a "partnership" of elites who work to adjust and balance the multiplicitous machine of political, economic and social interests, Harrington would spread out the decision making to at least nominally include the people. Harrington admits this would require a massive reorientation of consciousness -- an unlikely event in the view of the authors. But ultimately the authors say both sides endorse a similar kind of governance by expert, without moral content. The authors saw this last pair dimly stirring when they wrote this book in the mid-80s. Their prediction is perhaps half true as we have also witnessed the covert reassertion of NeoCapitalism in the last three administrations, if especially the current administration.
This dualistic strategy is supplemented by the touchstone use of Alexis de Toqueville's political and sociological insights to show how the seeds of much of American life today were sown early on. A fairly effective narrative trope, it serves their often stated goal of showing that it is through our shared history, our communities of memory, that we may see how others confronted the shifting landscapes of political economy, that we may today find a way to stop or at least hold at bay, in the words of Habermas, the "invasion of the lifeworld by systems logic." They maintain that such a course cannot be found through nostalgia for older institutions that once stood athwart the Mega-State. Many of those institutions, such as traditional churches, were paternalistic and discriminatory. Still social movements such as abolitionism grew out of them and were sustained by them. To recognize how the message of freedom forged by the founding generation has been reforged into a double-edged sword to enforce radical individualism, and destroy religious and republican morality and virtue. Government by a managerial elite, a kind of "democratic despotism" which de Toqueville saw as a potential of individualistic American mores has arrived.
As an example of the earlier language of America, they cite as an example Martin Luther King deployment of the language of the Bible and republican virtue in his "I Have A Dream" speech. His ringing biblical cadences, his use of "My Country 'Tis of Thee," and the words of the old Negro spiritual: "free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty I'm free at last," evoked our foundational civic and religious language. Bellah, like King, helps us remember and recapture the earlier language of America.
Along the way they also trace the politically neutralizing penetration of the individualistic "therapeutic mode" into religious life, the loss of "communities of memory" based on shared values, along with the "second language" of religious and republican virtue. All have which have acted to depoliticize American culture. Where once there was a language of sin and redemption, there is now only the therapeutic language of the self, a radical self which is encouraged by the therapeutic mode to consider one's self and one's happiness as paramount and thus mirrors and supports the ideology of the free market. We richly deserve the oxymoronic label of "private citizen."

Interviews with Americans tell the truth about Individualism

This book is about the inevitable conflict between American Individualism and the fact that humans are by nature social. We hunger for relationship yet we want it only on our terms. Bellah and his team of reseachers take on the enormous task of interviewing people from all over the country and the results of these interviews are presented factually and then analyzed. Whether one agrees with the book's conclusions or not, the interviewees speak for themselves, and they speak for a majority of Americans today who are often torn by conflicting authoritative messages and motives from without and within. This book is a marvelous and sometimes unsettling mirror into contemporary American society.

Current American Character - Individualism

Habits of the Heart describes and analyzes the current American Character both in great breadth and with great depth. It gave me a lot to think about. And it gave me a framework to use for my thinking. Bits and pieces of information, some of which I'd noticed before but discounted, are fit into both a historical and a current context.
The book is not a call to arms, nor does it present a list of suggestions for how to behave. The authors' direct opinions are circumscribed to the few pages of the Conclusion and the Appendix. And many of those comments have to do with either how academic sociology should do research or how the book was written. How five authors jointly wrote a single book sounds like an interesting story, but isn't commented on any further than to say it happened and it was a good thing.
As analysis it really does rank right up there with Alexis de Toqueville's Democracy in America and David Riesman's The Lonely Crowd. As political tract it isn't in the race.

Though Cendrars (1887-1961) is best known as a modernist French poet and novelist, he was also a journalist who chronicled for Paris-Soir a two-week visit to Hollywood in 1936. The pieces, later published as a book in several languages, are only now translated into English; and White, a freelance film journalist, provides an extensive, thoughtful introduction to this only fitfully interesting book. The familiar paradoxes that animate the text?Hollywood is an "illusion factory" where commerce reigns, a "New Byzantium" that is a quintessentially American mix of cynicism and joy, vulgarity and beauty?are largely bereft of the details or wit that would make them fresh. In the spring of 1942, under the guise of "military necessity," the U.S. government evacuated 110,000 Japanese Americans from their homes on the West Coast. About 7,000 people from the San Francisco Bay Area—the vast majority of whom were American citizens—were moved to an assembly center at Tanforan Racetrack and then to a concentration camp in Topaz, Utah. Dubbed the "jewel of the desert," the camp remained in operation until October 1945. This compelling book tells the history of Japanese Americans of San Francisco and the Bay Area, and of their experiences of relocation and internment.

Sandra C. Taylor first examines the lives of the Japanese Americans who settled in and around San Francisco near the end of the nineteenth century. As their numbers grew, so, too, did their sense of community. They were a people bound together not only by common values, history, and institutions, but also by their shared status as outsiders. Taylor looks particularly at how Japanese Americans kept their sense of community and self-worth alive in spite of the upheavals of internment.

The author draws on interviews with fifty former Topaz residents, and on the archives of the War Relocation Authority and newspaper reports, to show how relocation and its aftermath shaped the lives of these Japanese Americans. Written at a time when the United States once again regards Japan as a threat, Taylor's study testifies to the ongoing effects of prejudice toward Americans whose face is also the face of "the enemy."

Utah history professor Taylor explores the impact on the issei and nissei of the San Francisco Bay area of their World War II journey from their homes to their assembly at Tanforan Racetrack and then their internment at the Topaz, Utah, camp. Taylor finds "community" to be a vital concept in her analysis of the "network of associations and institutions that held together a group of people who were set apart from the majority by their ethnicity" before the war and of the effects of internment on that network and on the people who had been part of it. Drawing on the records of the War Relocation Authority, the contemporary press, other studies of those American concentration camps, and nearly 50 oral histories of area Japanese Americans who were interned at Topaz, Jewel of the Desert is a thoughtful, nuanced narrative of the Utah internment. Informative, but not very balanced

Having grown up with friends who were the children or grandchildren of internees at Topaz, and neighbors who may have been there as well, I've wanted to read this book for quite a while. Ms. Taylor has managed to pull together a lot of information from sources that are becoming fewer and fewer, and presents a good history of the struggles and hardships Japanese-Americans (especially those from the San Francisco Bay area) faced during WWII. Some interesting pictures are included, but only a few of them were actually taken at Topaz.

While I appreciated the perspective gained from this book, it felt like it was too long and that some of the information was repeated several times. Also, while it does offer bits and pieces of the experience of internees, it offers little by way of more substantial stories of the individuals, failing to really put a face on the people. The last two chapters give summary information on the post-Topaz lives of several dozen internees, but I wish it had been written into the rest of the book, which could have made it more readable and would have eliminated much of the repetition. I also felt that it failed to adequately comment on the perspective and feelings of the Japanese-Americans (other than vague generalities) regarding certain events of the war, such as the bombing of Pearl Harbor and dropping the Atomic bombs on Japan. In that way it comes across as feeling very academic as opposed to personal. My biggest complaint, however, was with the regular and heavy emphasis (particularly in the beginning) on "caucasion racism," as if no other race was capable or guilty of discriminating another. As such it's a rather myopic view of history, but it's still valuable and interesting when taken with the whole, especially in light of current events and the reactions toward Arab-Americans following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Saadawi (b. 1931) is an Egyptian woman, a medical doctor, a prolific writer, and the Arabic-speaking worlds most outspoken and radical feminist. Without exaggerating, Malti-Douglas writes that No Arab woman inspires as much emotion as Nawal El Saadawi. No woman in the Middle East has been the subject of more polemic. Certainly, no Arab womans pen has violated as many sacred enclosures. Malti-Douglas then devotes over two hundred pages to analyzing Saadawis overheated rhetoric and bad novels, calling on all the usual feminist tropes (title and subtitle give their flavor, as do such chapter headings as Paradigms of Violation and Rewriting Patriarchy).
This predictable feminist lionizing of one of its own holds little interest to the general reader, but Malti-Douglas does raise an intriguing issue when she reports on the clash between Saadawi and her equally leftist intellectual (male) opponents in the Middle East. They would have her stay quiet about the appalling female condition in their countries and try to delegitimize her writings as Orientalist feminism. To which Malti-Douglas replies that Anti-imperialism can easily become a trap through which nationalism, while seeking to defend the native against the outsider, really defends those in power in the native society. Saadawis feminism, in other words, proves a source of unusual sympathy for the West. The importance of these epithets? Another sign of the intellectual lefts weakness: caught up in a web of its own inconsistencies, it (unlike the fundamentalist right) cannot even figure out its outlook on the West.
