The Second Gold Rush: Oakland and the East Bay in World War II, by Marilynn S. Johnson

More than any event in the twentieth century, World War II marked the coming of age of America's West Coast cities. Almost overnight, new war industries prompted the mass urban migration and development that would trigger lasting social, cultural, and political changes. For the San Francisco Bay Area, argues Marilynn Johnson, the changes brought by World War II were as dramatic as those brought by the gold rush a century earlier.

Focusing on Oakland, Richmond, and other East Bay shipyard boomtowns, Johnson chronicles the defense buildup, labor migration from the South and Midwest, housing issues, and social and racial conflicts that pitted newcomers against longtime Bay Area residents. She follows this story into the postwar era, when struggles over employment, housing, and civil rights shaped the urban political landscape for the 1950s and beyond. She also traces the cultural legacy of war migration and shows how Southern religion and music became an integral part of Bay Area culture.

Johnson's sources are wide-ranging and include shipyard records, labor histories, police reports, and interviews. Her findings place the war's human drama at center stage and effectively recreate the texture of daily life in workplace, home, and community. Enriched by the photographs of Dorothea Lange and others, The Second Gold Rush makes an important contribution to twentieth-century urban studies as well as to California history.

WWII Formed the White Black Divide for the East Bay
By Randall L. Wilson
Marilynn Johnson does an excellent job demonstrating how the East Bay's rapid expansion during WW2 established the urban racial divide that is still with us today. First it did this by bringing into the East Bay a large influx of African Americans escaping the Jim Crow realities of the American South. California and the East Bay didn't have Jim Crow mostly because there weren't enough African Americans to warrant it. Also, those that were established in the area knew the unwritten rules of race relations; where they could go and how they had to behave.

Not all the immigrants who came to the East Bay during the war years to build ships were African American. There were also a large contingent of whites from Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas as well as elsewhere. While the East Bay had plenty of jobs, they didn't have enough housing and culturally the East Bay wasn't terribly welcoming to the new workers. The media propagated a phony crime scare and the police cracked down with raids and curfews aimed at keeping the new arrivals in line.

But the real crime was after the war when African American migrant were stuck in temporary wartime housing and provided no public alternatives and were then forced into slums. The suburbs were off limits as is suggested by the story of the Garys, an African American family that bought a house in a white section of San Pablo. On moving day in 1952 they were greeted by 150 of their white neighbors jeering, calling them names, burning a cross on the lawn and throwing a brick through their window. While the Gary's courageously remained in their home, few African Americans followed their lead and who can blame them.

This is an academic treatise and yet it is readable. Ms. Johnson sticks closely to the facts which makes her book highly credible but she doesn't use her research for deep insight or to take a risk on a theory or observation. Robert Self's history of Postwar Oakland covers similar ground and is much more insightful.

Informative chronicle of East Bay life during WWII
By A Customer
Anyone interested in the history of the east side of the San Francisco Bay during the 20th century will enjoy this book. Johnson employs a social historian's approach to explain what happened to the Richmond and Oakland from 1941 to 1945 and how the war years affected the Midwesterners and Southerners (and others) that came to the Bay Area and the natives that they encountered. The book successfully portrays aspects of Bay Area history such as huge shipyards, temporary war housing and rowdy downtown night-life that, for the most part, are no longer visible. Johnson also outlines some of the political movements that developed during the WWII years and how they affected post-war Oakland and Richmond. Johnson's discussion of the politics of the late `40s and early `50s is informative and interesting but also brief; this may somewhat frustrate anyone interested in the political history of the region. Overall, this is an informative, well-written book.

The formation of the East Bay societies
By E. Clarke
I did a very quick read of this book but still found it to be quite informative. It provided a good base of knowledge of how the migration of people from around the US integrated into the East Bay region. Being a Bay Area resident I found that many of the socio-economic issues that are being dealt with today were created in part as a result of government housing policies and the rapid development of industrial areas without consideration of long term problems. There are more than enough statistics to make your head spin and a few sections that get a bit bland, but overall an enjoyable read on that period of history.

The Reign of the Phallus: Sexual Politics in Ancient Athens, by Eva C. Keuls

At once daring and authoritative, this book offers a profusely illustrated history of sexual politics in ancient Athens.

The phallus was pictured everywhere in ancient Athens: painted on vases, sculpted in marble, held aloft in gigantic form in public processions, and shown in stage comedies. This obsession with the phallus dominated almost every aspect of public life, influencing law, myth, and customs, affecting family life, the status of women, even foreign policy.

This is the first book to draw together all the elements that made up the "reign of the phallus"—men's blatant claim to general dominance, the myths of rape and conquest of women, and the reduction of sex to a game of dominance and submission, both of women by men and of men by men.

In her elegant and lucid text Eva Keuls not only examines the ideology and practices that underlay the reign of the phallus, but also uncovers an intense counter-movement—the earliest expressions of feminism and antimilitarism.

Complementing the text are 345 reproductions of Athenian vase paintings. Some have been reproduced in a larger format and gathered in an appendix for easy reference and closer study. These revealing illustrations are a vivid demonstration that classical Athens was more sexually polarized and repressive of women than any other culture in Western history.

Subjective "feminism"..?
By AMX
I found this book quite interesting, not only because of it's informative content but also because of it's 20th/21st century "feminist" undertones and subjective interpretations. Words such as "denigrate", "sequester", "gynophobia", etc. could only be the unfair outcome of applying paradigms from our modern social times in the West to a Great civilisation of thousands of years ago. Here are some brief thoughts and considerations. How long has it taken the Christian church to accept women as priests? A subject which continues to be controversial to this day. In ancient Greece it was women "Priestesses", that had the ultimate authority or power to administer religious rites. Deities were devided in female and male gods and goddesses. Economy is derived from the Greek word "oikonomia" from "oikonomos" meaning "Manager of a Household". In ancient Greece, women although removed from political affairs and responsibilities, they had great responsibility in running and managing all of their household affairs. In theatrical plays, both comedies and tradegies, women characters were given extremely powerful and poignant roles, (Medea, Lysistrata, Electra, etc.). They weren't allowed to perform on stage, but they weren't in Shakespeare's time either. And finally how long has it taken for the electoral system to allow voting by women in the West (Ref: Suffrage movements in 19th/20th centuries where women frustrated by their social and economic situation...!)? How could someone, make these rather sweeping interpretations and draw hyperbolic conclusions from the study of a set of artistic "erotica" vase paintings and of comedy and tragedy plays, defeats comprehension. I wonder what interpretation would be given to the so called "erotica" photo-pornographic filth and obscene material available in abundance today! However, whatever the case and view one wishes to maintain or adopt, it is clear that the subject of ancient Greece continues to evoke an immense interest and fascination...

Illuminating, occasionally over-reaching
By Kinnison
Scholars of the social and private life of antiquity face the difficult task of constructing a coherent narrative out of bits and pieces of information widely scattered through classical art, litterature, and archeaology, and Keuls does an excellent job of this. Her analysis of pictorial art and its various representations of men, women, boys, prostitutes, and sex acts is particularly illuminating. On the down side the book is not always very well organized, and the discussions of group ritual, including tragedy, as an examination of and cathartic release from the pressures of sexual antagonism offer some very interesting insights but could have been better developed.
My biggest problem is with the book's tendency, already noted by some reviewers, to overreach, to read certain historical and mythological complexities purely according to its own thesis. Thus, Keuls takes the prevalence of the Amazonomachia, the story of an Amazon assault on prehistoric Athens, as a sign of Athenian preoccupation with aggressive women and the battle of the sexes. But the Greeks are of course known for their artistic tendency to approach history through myth, and the myth of the oriental Amazons' assault on Athens almost perfectly mirrors the assault of the Persians in 490 and 480. These struggles were central not only to Athenian pride but also to their moral justification for empire, and it would surprising if Athenians _didn't_ reproduce them as often as possible, sexual politics aside.
I also don't think much of the book's biggest claim, that the women of Athens were responsible for the mutilation of the Herms in 415. Keuls acknowledges that, if she's correct, the women's responsibility could not be kept for long, but vaguely explains this away by saying the truth was "too shocking to acknowledge." This does not really address the obvious problems of attributing responsibility for one of the greatest mysteries of Antiquity to a group that couldn't keep it a secret. More simply, while Keuls represents the mutilation as a protest, it was to the Athenians an act of sabotage, exposing the expedition and the city to the deadly wrath of the gods. Protest is one thing; sabotage, deliberately endangering their men, their city, and themselves is something else altogether. The simple fact is that only a really well disciplined, organized, and ruthless conspiracy (my money's on oligarchic revolutionaries) could have carried the mutilations out and gotten away with it.
But don't get the wrong idea. This is a good book on the fascinating subject of ancient social and sexual mores, though readers would do better to start with Dover's classic "Greek Homosexuality."

Women in the Metropolis: Gender and Modernity in Weimar Culture (Weimar and Now: German Cultural Criticism), by Katharina von Ankum

Bringing together the work of scholars in many disciplines, Women in the Metropolis provides a comprehensive introduction to women's experience of modernism and urbanization in Weimar Germany. It shows women as active participants in artistic, social, and political movements and documents the wide range of their responses to the multifaceted urban culture of Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s.

Examining a variety of media ranging from scientific writings to literature and the visual arts, the authors trace gendered discourses as they developed to make sense of and regulate emerging new images of femininity. Besides treating classic films such as Metropolis and Berlin: Symphony of a Great City, the articles discuss other forms of mass culture, including the fashion industry and the revue performances of Josephine Baker. Their emphasis on women's critical involvement in the construction of their own modernity illustrates the significance of the Weimar cultural experience and its relevance to contemporary gender, German, film, and cultural studies.

Christianity and the Rhetoric of Empire: The Development of Christian Discourse (Sather Classical Lectures), by Averil Cameron

Many reasons can be given for the rise of Christianity in late antiquity and its flourishing in the medieval world. In asking how Christianity succeeded in becoming the dominant ideology in the unpromising circumstances of the Roman Empire, Averil Cameron turns to the development of Christian discourse over the first to sixth centuries A.D., investigating the discourse's essential characteristics, its effects on existing forms of communication, and its eventual preeminence. Scholars of late antiquity and general readers interested in this crucial historical period will be intrigued by her exploration of these influential changes in modes of communication.

The emphasis that Christians placed on language—writing, talking, and preaching—made possible the formation of a powerful and indeed a totalizing discourse, argues the author. Christian discourse was sufficiently flexible to be used as a public and political instrument, yet at the same time to be used to express private feelings and emotion. Embracing the two opposing poles of logic and mystery, it contributed powerfully to the gradual acceptance of Christianity and the faith's transformation from the enthusiasm of a small sect to an institutionalized world religion.

Review
"Cameron's lectures. . . are the work of a master hand, and deal with a question to which an apparently increasing number of ancient historians wish to turn, namely the mysterious problem of the spread of Christianity in a society that showed little sign of being sympathetic."--Henry Chadwick, "Times Literary Supplement

About the Author

A thought-provoking masterpiece...
By Guillermo
At the time Averil Cameron's "Christianity and the Rhetoric of Empire" came into the academic world the study of rhetoric as a historical method was still in its infancy. Much of the type of work done in ancient history ever since has changed in part due to the power of the ideas found in Cameron's insightful lectures.

Any student of classical history and Christianity has to face, sooner or later, one of the greatest riddles of all history: how did an eastern, small, and by all accounts marginal religion was capable not only of surviving, but ultimately of succeeding were other alternatives (and there were many) inexorably failed?

Ancient Christian historians such as Eusebius had no problem to attribute the victory to God, leaving little doubt that every event was carefully coordinated and supervised by the Divine being. But what Eusebius et al did not considered, or rather were unmoved to consider, was how much of the triumph of Christianity had to do with the way it created its own language, or, to borrow from Cameron's terminology, its own "discourse." Christianity is a faith with a message, and, if there is one thing that Christians are suposse to do well, that would be to express that message in a way that would be intelligible to all.

The paradox, which Cameron continously mentions, resides in that, for all its universalist and inclusivist features, Christianity could not coexist without critiquing, and ultimately defeating, other types of discourses. The God of the Christians is not one god, nor even the first god, among many; He is the only God or he is no god at all. How can a religion that has such a exclusivist belief at its heart was able to "conquer" such a pluralistic culture as the Roman Empire remains one of the most fascinating topics any historian could possible choose to study; and among those who do, Cameron's work remains a must read.

Christian rhetoric as a tool of fashioning catholic empire
By George A Sherman
This is literally a seminal book. For me Cameron provides a meditation on questions and issues that have been haunting me for years regarding the use of language (written and visual) in the formation of a religion that began as small dissident sects and, over the course of three to four centuries achieved imperial recognition and status. This is not a book for tyros, but is most profitably read by students familiar with the sources and the sitz im leben. The speed reader will miss the challenge of confronting his or her own questions with the evidence presented. For example, the author devotes considerable space to the rhetoric of virginity and asceticism. This stimulated me to ask, "Is this language of purity an indictment of a church has been compromised by Roman imperial culture and ethics? Is this insistence on purity an admission of the church's sin of rejecting the meek Jesus of the past in favor of the powerful Kurios of the present? This rejection formally took place when Nicaea declared Christ to be god, a god incarnated in imperial imagery. Cameron indicates that a theological paradigmatic shift took place in the fourth through the fifth centuries. There is a tremendous difference between the tentative use of christian symbols by Ignatius of Antioch and the self assured proclamations of Gregory of Nyssa. The roots of modern christian theology are planted in the fourth through the fifth centuries. Cameron demonstrates that the christian rhetoric of that period provided the familiar themes of Greco Roman culture, but transfused with christian themes. This hybrid not only appealed to all social classes, unlike classical rhetoric, but carried within it the tensions that surfaced during the Iconoclast debate, the debate which resulted in the victory of the masses over the elite. Cameron's style of writing is to present complicated thoughts in lengthy sentences. However, if one hangs in, accepts the evidence presented, and applies it to his own analysis, she will be appreciated as taking the critique of classical rhetoric beyond mere stylistic criticism to its function in the creation of history.

Judgment in Jerusalem: Chief Justice Simon Agranat and the Zionist Century, by Pnina Lahav

Simon Agranat (1906-1992) was the third chief justice of the Israeli Supreme Court and a founding father of Israeli law. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, and educated at the University of Chicago, Agranat brought U.S. progressivism and constitutionalism to Israeli legal soil. Agranat laid the foundation for Israel's bill of rights and took part in nearly every important Israeli legal and political issue of this century. Pnina Lahav's rewarding study of Simon Agranat portrays Israeli history through the lens of judicial opinions. It is based on her extensive interviews with the justice before his death and a close examination of his papers. A major theme in her book is the relationship between Agranat's world view and landmark Israeli Supreme Court opinions, and she tells the compelling story of a visionary jurist and an American pursuing his Zionist dream in Palestine. Here, too, is an illuminating view of Israeli history and legal culture that includes the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Holocaust, the symbiosis between religion and the Jewish state, and the tensions within Zionism itself. Lahav also details the thinking behind Agranat's 1962 decision to convict Adolph Eichmann and the justice's dissent in the "Who Is a Jew?" case in 1970.

This is the first biography of the man who made both a geographical and a psychological journey from the United States to Jerusalem. In demonstrating the influences of one culture on another, Judgment in Jerusalem provides important insights into Israeli law and politics and into the complex processes that form a national identity.

From Kirkus Reviews
Lahav, a Boston University law professor raised in Israel, provides a textured portrait of the life, times, and legal decisions of American-raised Simon Agranat, former chief justice of Israel's Supreme Court. Lahav's Israeli-American perspective helps her analyze the profound influence of progressive American ideology and legal writing on Israel's most prolific jurist. During Agranat's tumultuous years on Israel's Supreme Court (194876), he even cited Abraham Lincoln while shaping Israel's judicial history. Agranat is seen as the pivotal force who ``steered the Israeli judiciary away from legal formalities and toward a more substantive understanding of the meaning of law.'' Occasionally, Agranat disappoints Lahav's own, more liberal stances on separation of church and state and the rights of Israeli Arabs to mount political challenges to the Jewish state. For all its reforms, the Agranat Court could not tolerate Palestinian nationalism. Lahav sets Agranat's most public episode, the Eichmann trial of 1960, within the ideological context of universal ``Utopian'' Zionism's struggle with the insular ``Catastrophic'' Zionism; the latter wins out as Agranat betrays his former opposition to the death penalty as a lesson to the world. Lahav sees the Agranat Commission in the wake of the Yom Kippur War as the justice's greatest challenge and legacy. In examining the reasons for national unreadiness in this disastrous surprise attack, Agranat secured both his integrity and his unpopularity. Most Israelis identified with the army (which the commission pilloried) and resented Golda Meir and Moshe Dayan (who were vindicated). The book offers a unique view of Israeli legal history and is far too readable (and relevant) to be dismissed as simply a judicial biography. From the Inside Flap
"Pnina Lahav's evocative and masterfully written biography of one of Israel's greatest justices is a penetrating study of a country, a nation, a legal system combining ancient laws with modern concepts, and a dream turned into destiny."—Elie Wiesel

"[This] is one of the best judicial biographies ever. It is also one of the most acute and riveting depictions of the birth and development of Israel itself. Agranat, as Lahav writes, was to Israeli law what David Ben Gurion was to its politics. This book is worthy of him."—Floyd Abrams

"This is the best biographyI have ever read. Pnina Lahav brilliantly uses the life of Simon Agranat to illuminate the history of Zionism, the history of Israel, the history of law in Israel, and the history of justice. The result is riveting."—Laura Kalman, author of The Strange Career of Legal Liberalism and Abe Fortas

"A wonderful book that is not only a biography of one of Israel's most important Chief Justices, but a history of the development of Israel's Supreme Court and of Israeli public law. It includes a fascinating account of the trials arising out of the Holocaust. This is the first biography in English of a man who made the geographical as well as the psychological journey from Chicago to Jerusalem, and it is in part the story of the way one culture can be carried to another by a human being who ultimately is affected by both. It is well worth the attention of anyone interested in Israel, the development of law, the phenomenon of law developed in the absence of a written constitution, and the culture of human rights."—Philippa Strum, author of The Supreme Court and Political Questions

"This is a judicial biography in the grand style, one which looks not only at the central actor, but at the law he influenced as well as the times in which he lived. We learn not only about Agranat, but about Israel, and about an area on which relatively little has been written in English, the development of Israeli constitutional law and the impact of American legal traditions on that development." Judging Judgment in Jerusalem
By Itzchak E. Kornfeld
Pnina Lahav's book Judgment in Jerusalem: Chief Justice Simon Agranat and the Zionists Century is both exceptionally well written and eminently readable. The book is a biography of a deceased and former President Judge of the Israel Supreme Court. Justice Shimon Agranat's life spanned 86 years, from 1906 to 1992.

The book traces the life of Simon's( Shimon in Hebrew) father Aaron, who grew up in Russia, as an ardent Zionist, and how father influenced son. We meet Aaron, a secular - though imbued with Jewish tradition - who was uneducated but extremely ambitious, and learn abut the man as he arrives in Louisville, KY, works as a teacher at a Synogogue and then is either fired or quits and moves his wife and two sons to Chicago. The windy city is the place where Aaron grows and Simon grows up. Aaron while working days, attends dental school and prospers as a dentist.

Aaron becomes influential in Chicago's Jewish Community but especially in Zionist causes. Simon, who worships his father also becomes an ardent Zionist, and begins to write and edit a newspaper that addresses Zionist issues, especially when a conflict in the early 1920s brews between U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brandies and Chaim Weizmann, the President of the World Zionist Organization (and the first President of Israel, from February 17, 1949 - November 9, 1952, when he died. Brandies loses to Weizmann and Simon becomes bitter and despondent. The incident follows Agranat for a good part of his life.
When Simon was 16 years old his father decides that the family must accomplish its dram and they move to Palestine.

The family takes up residence in Tel Aviv and Simon attends the Gimnasium Herzelya, Israel's best and most progressive high school. Aaron is unable to earn a living in Tel Aviv and the family lives in pretty squalid conditions. They move back to Chicago where Simon attends the University of Chicago, and once he graduates attends the University of Chicago Law School. He is influenced by a number of the professors while in law school.

In 1930 the family moves back to Israel. This time, they settle in Haifa, where Aaron's dental practice blossoms. Simon, who was studying for the Bar Exam. Once he passed the Illinois Bar Exam and was sworn in as a member of the Illinois Bar, Simon joins his family in Haifa. Following the required internship or 'stage' in Jerusalem, he joins a friend in practice. Simon is not a good businessman, although he proves himself to be an excellent researcher. He becomes a judge, which suits his personality, and then rises to Supreme Court Justice. He always worked long and hard.

Agranat faces numerous hurdles during his judicial era, including what was probably a nervous breakdown in the early 1960s. His Supreme Court career extended from 1950-76, including, Deputy President 1961-66 and President 1966-76. A good deal of Lahav's book analyzes Agranat's tenure and the handling of the legal issues in three principal cases. The first, a 1953 Supreme Court judgment involving the Communist newspaper Kol Ha'am (trans. 'Voice of the Nation') and its right to criticize the Ben-Gurion led MAPAI government, Agranat pointed out that Israel's Declaration of Independence was based on the foundation of freedom and freedom of conscience: Israel was a 'freedom-loving state', he held. The Kol Ha'am judgment paved the way for the Supreme Court sitting as a High Court of Justice for reviewing a host of administrative actions by the Israeli Government, including the planned deportations of Arabs accused of terrorism.

The second, the Kasztner Trial, was a defamation case involving accusations that Kasztner, who bargained with Adolf Eichmann to save Hungarian Jewery, from the gas chambers, in fact sold out Hungary's Jews. The Minister of Justice brought the case on behalf of Kasztner, who committed suicide, do to the stress of the accusations. Agranat, who wrote the opinion for the Court, found for the government - that Kasztner was defamed - overruling the district or trial trial court, who's judge was bamboozled by the a flamboyant defense attorney. Lahav, correctly frames the case as an attack on the Ben-Gurion government.

The third important case in which Agranat leads the Supreme Court is the appeal by Adolf Eichmann. Although vehemently against the death penalty, Agranat agrees with his colleagues that Eichmannn's punishment declared by the district court, that is, the ultimate penalty for his role in the slaughter of millions of Jews during the Holocaust, must be upheld. Agranat also took on the task of finding and explaining that Israel did have jurisdiction over Eichmann, even though he was kidnapped by the Mossad from Argentina.

Lahav also follows Agranat as he became involved in 1961 the Lavon Affair - a scandal over a failed Israeli covert operation in Egypt known as Operation Susannah, in which Israeli military intelligence planted bombs in Egyptian, American and British-owned targets in Egypt in the summer of 1954 in the hopes that "the Muslim Brotherhood, the Communists, 'unspecified malcontents' or 'local nationalists'" would be blamed - which brought the MAPAI and Ben Gurion government down with a loud thud.

Lahav does an excellent job of showing how Agranat's American training allowed him to find remedy's that were either non-existent or undeveloped in Israeli law. She also demonstrates that Agranat was also a part of a movement of non-common law Russian or German born judges, who sought to graft common law principles into Israel's Ottoman/Turkish, Jewish and Colonial English jurisprudence. Indeed, Shimon Agranat was a singular figure who was a part of a small group of Western-trained lawyers - including former President Chaim Herzog, Justice Itzhak Shiloh as well as the late Judge Helmut Lowenberg - who gave the Israeli legal system an imprint of American and British law.

Essential Reading for Understanding Israel's Current Conflic
By book maven
Fascinating book tracing the ideological and judicial development of Simon Agranat. Agranat's changes over time mirrored Israel's and reflected the tensions within the developing state of Israel-- democracy and pluralism versus unity and nation-building, progressivism and universality versus particularism, human rights versus "security," etc. The sections on the Eichmann trial and the ongoing "Who is a Jew" controversy are the most powerful sections, while other sections, such as that on the powers of the Attorney General, are a bit dense. Since Israel is still confronting virtually all of the issues and conflicts which Agranat faced as a judge over many decades, this book provides essential historical background and context.
