The Shanghai Green Gang: Politics and Organized Crime, 1919-1937, by Brian G. Martin

In a remarkable example of history as detective work, Brian Martin pieces together the fascinating and complex story of the Shanghai Green Gang and its charismatic leader, Du Yuesheng. Martin sifts through a variety of fragmentary and at times contradictory evidence—from diplomatic dispatches to memoirs to police reports—to produce the most comprehensive account of this chaotic period of Chinese history. In analyzing the Green Gang's system of organized crime in Shanghai, the author broadens our understanding of a critical aspect of Chinese urban history and sheds light on the history of drug trafficking and organized crime worldwide.

Martin argues that the Green Gang, the most powerful secret society in China during the first half of the twentieth century, was a resilient social organization that adapted successfully to the complex environment of a modernizing urban society. Illustrating its multilayered and complex relations with the bourgeoisie, the industrial proletariat, and the foreign and domestic political authorities, Martin demonstrates how these factors led to the Green Gang's absorption into the corporate state system after 1932.

Very detailed and interesting
By Saldinger
« The Shanghai Green Gang » is probably the best book in English available on the subject at the moment. It traces the origins of the Gang back to the Chinese professional trade federations and secret societies of old China and presents in detail its rise and criminal activities at its peak period, between the enforcement of the opium ban in 1919, until the Japanese invasion in 1937. Brian Martin, presented as a « Senior China Analyst for the Australian Government » argues successfully that the Green Gang , far form being a leftover from medieval China, as secret societies often tend to be seen, was a symptom of China's modernization, spawned by Shanghai's unique colonial status, booming economy, decaying administration and revolutionary undercurrents. Unsurprisingly, the story revolves around opium lord Du Yuesheng but this book still gives a comprehensive picture of the whole gallery of green gang bosses. The relationship between the gang and French authorities in Shanghai is well-documented, as well as the shift of the gang's activities from the French concession to the kuomintang spheres in the early thirties. A must-have for any old Shanghai book collector.

As many academic works-turned-books, this expensive piece of reading does, however, present a few downsides : it sometimes lays too much stress on secondary characters, with lengthy enumerations of Chinese names, which interrupt the demonstration and sometimes take the steam off the presentation. A very descriptive and analytical book, it also pays a lot of attention to the administrative, political or corporate structures set up by the gangsters to conduct their various trades, the detail of which will only interest history scholars. Characters and events are all presented in a very matter-of-fact way which don't make for very entertaining reading, as the author readily admits in his introduction.

Most scholarly of all, the conclusion, far from concluding anything, draws a comparison between the Shanghai Green Gang and criminal mafias in other countries, which as a reader I found rather pointless. I'd have preferred being told, however briefly, about what happened after 1937, during the war, how Mao dealt with the gangsters after 1949 and how these characters disappeared. About half of the book is about the relations between the Green Gang and kuomintang so one naturally wonders about what happened to the gang after Tchang Kai Tchek fled to Taiwan. It would be more interesting than a brief parrallel with the American prohibition, Japanese yakuza or Jakarta gangsters. Hopefully this will be corrected in a future edition.

The book's actually quite short, given that the last 100 pages are devoted to notes, a Chinese glossary, bibliography and index.
