San Francisco's Beat poets, Dixieland jazz musicians, and the area's stunning vistas were essential parts of Abstract Expressionism, as were artistic and spiritual contacts with Asia.
Under Douglas MacAgy and Clyfford Still, the California School of Fine Arts became the undisputed center of vanguard abstraction on the West Coast. but all in all it's still a good book for my collection

I thought it would have more on the well known artists of that school, but all in all it's still a good book for my collection. UPDATE: I changed my review from 4 to 5 stars. I had only skimmed through the text at first, but now after reading most of the way through it, I find myself absolutely fascinated. I particularly paid attention to sections about John Grillo, who I had only heard about in passing. He and Edward Corbett have become one of my "need to research further" artists.

Excellent

For art history lovers this beautifully assembled book about San Francisco painters at a particular historical moment is a must. The book length essay written by Susan Landauer is excellent and thorough. The images are well-chosen and essential. I have considerable background in the location and subject she covered and I learned a LOT by reading this. Very important labor of love.
