Amazon.com Review
Raskin's scrupulously researched history corrects many of the myths Abbie Hoffman perpetuated about his life and career, yet also prompts new respect for the man as an able political strategist and organizer. Hard to believe from the staid book jacket photo, but the author (now a university professor) was "minister of education" in Hoffman's Youth International Party, better known as the Yippies. Raskin generally keeps his personal involvement in the background, but it obviously informs his well-rounded, antistereotypical depiction of the messy, often demented nature of 1960s radicalism.

From Publishers Weekly
A self-proclaimed "cultural revolutionary," iconoclast Abbie Hoffman (1936-1989) used speeches, performance art, guerrilla theater, books (Revolution for the Hell of It, Steal This Book, Woodstock Nation) and witty media manipulation to stir the countercultural soup of the 1960s. This vibrant biography captures his anarchic antics as it chronicles the turbulence of that decade. Communications professor Raskin (My Search for B. Traven), who knew Hoffman for 20 years, sees his life as "a fabulous story that blurs the line between fact and fiction, reality and fantasy, autobiography and mythology." He maps Hoffman's journey from a Worcester, Mass., childhood to Brandeis, Berkeley and New York, detailing his civil rights/antiwar activities, the 1968 confrontations between Yippies and the Chicago police at the Democratic Convention, Woodstock (which Hoffman called "the first attempt to land a man on the earth") and the chaotic Chicago Conspiracy Trial. In love with his own media reflection, Hoffman entered the 1970s with "godlike invincibility." Not long after his 1973 bust for cocaine smuggling, he became an underground fugitive (as "Barry Freed"), resurfacing in the 1980s on college campuses before his final descent into manic-depressive anguish and suicide. Raskin interviewed more than 200 friends and family members, jigsawing together material from court records, FBI files and yellowing radical newspapers to present this portrait of a prankster who remains the "quintessential spirit of the era." From Library Journal
Abbie Hoffman (1936-89) was an American original. In this new biography, Raskin (communication studies, Sonoma State Univ.) provides a first-rate introduction to the topsy-turvy career of one of the wildest rebels of the 1960s. Drawing on over 250 interviews, as well as documentary materials and personal recollections, Raskin places Hoffman's distinctive brand of media-based activism in a broader historical context. The result is a compelling portrait of the rise and fall of 1960s radicalism. "Looking back at Abbie from the vantage point of the nineties," Raskin writes, "it seems to me that he was the first American cultural revolutionary in the age of television." Raskin is more sympathetic to his subject than Marty Jezer in Abbie Hoffman: American Rebel (LJ 8/92); both books have their strengths, but Raskin's is better written. Recommended for collections in U.S. history, culture, and politics.?Kent Worcester, Social Science Research Council, New York

But not bad.
By Ben
Well written book, thoroughly enjoyable, a quick read.

My main complaint is that he really blew through the later days of Abbie's life in quite a hurry. He even said that another whole volume would be needed to chronicle Hoffman's life after going underground for his cocaine bust and then after turning himself in, roughly from '74 until '89. So I guess because another whole volume could be written, Raskin just decided to summarize it in the briefest of detail. I was really interested in knowing more about his adventures with Amy Carter at the University of Massachusetts. That's kind of why I bought the book, in fact. There's precious little about it.

But not bad.

Read "For the Hell of It" for the hell of it!

Without question, the best of the recent spate of Abbie Hoffman bios. Lucid, well-researched, with more than 200 oral histories. What prevents it from receiving a "10" rating is that Raskin devotes only one short chapter to Hoffman's life in the late seventies and eighties. Despite the lack of attention paid to Hoffman's later life, the material leading up to the last chapter flows nicely, and tells the story of a complex, energetic, and ultimately great American.

rest in peace, Abbie. here's hoping you made it.

I am frankly saddened that this book, written nearly 20 years ago (and almost 30 years since Abbie's death via suicide or whatever), has received so little attention by the world or (for that matter) reviewers of books. It attempts to analyze and chronicle the life and times of one of the most energetic, radical, and fascinating personalities of the 20th century. His life was clearly a drama of tragedy, triumph, and comic antics. But along side of all that: Abbie was a radical anarchist who loved people and freedom and revolution, ... - and NOT "just revolution for the hell of it." - he SAW the vast encroachment of "Brave New World/1984 on steroids," ... and he was very (and rightfully) concerned and in full rebellion against it.
I think, honestly, Abbie very much despaired of his generation and his own future and the future of America and humanity in general. In the end, the despair (and almost utter bleakness of that yawning abyss) got the best of him, ... and he didn't see a future that he cared much to live for or "to keep trying well into old age." - that is, ASSUMING it was his own hand that ended his life. we may never know.
His was a bright and fanciful life. kudos to the author who did his best to capture Abbie's thoughts and motives.
My personal prayer and hope is that the man (at last) found something more transcendental than paganism, playfulness and radicalism that drove his life to such brilliance, celebrity, ... and tragedy. REAL Hope, if I may say so, is finding GOD at the center of Life and Eternity. but He is never found by those who (with determination) deny Him and go in every direction *BUT* TOWARD Him. {HE IS THE Moral Center of Life and the Universe} .
and He is found only by those who truly seek Him *with the heart.*
rest in peace, Abbie. here's hoping you made it.
